EXCLUSIVE: 'The Hangover Part III' Reveals Doug Is the Wolf Pack?

Screenwriter Craig Mazin doubts that the third and final chapter of this saga will revolve around Alan's bachelor party and marriage.

The Hangover Part III will deviate from the formula
The Hangover Part II debuted last night to the tune of $10.4 million, making it the largest midnight opening of any movie thus far this year, and the biggest R rated midnight opening in history.

Of course there is going to be another sequel.

Director and co-writer Todd Phillips has already stated that a story for The Hangover Part III is in the works. And while The Hangover Part II sticks close to the formula set up in the original, this last chapter, in what will be a trilogy, is going to deviate from the path laid out before it by the first two entries in the franchise. He then gave no further details.

We recently caught up with co-writer Craig Mazin, who went more in-depth into the story plans for The Hangover Part III.

"I cannot image a worse hangover than the one they experience in Bangkok. That's it. No more. The third one really has to be about something that gets them off of this cycle. Every time these three guys get together, something terrible happens. The third one is about saving them from a life of agony. Sometimes you are caught between a rock and a hard place. Sometimes, people are going to ding you for being too similar. They are going to ding you for straying. If it ain't broke, why fix it? This isn't really about responding to internal criticism. For the third one, I think it's really about what makes sense for the characters. When you are making an action movie, the action star is really an avatar for you to go through that situation. Its about the plot and action. This really isn't about the plot. It's about these guys going through some sort of horrendous growth experience. If we are going to end it...This isn't James Bond. We're not going to do The Hangover 20...There will be another one, and it will be the hangover to end all hangovers. And in a sense, it has to go to another level, again. The Hangover Part II goes to another level in terms of how dark and insane it gets. The Hangover Part III will go to another level for the guys."

When asked for specifics, Craig Mazin was hesitant to go further.

" No. (Laughs) God. Its not that I mean to be withholding it. Its not that I, or Todd Phillips, or anyone involved with the movie think its so precious to keep this big secret. Things are just funnier when you don't know what's coming. It kills me when I look at all the marketing for The Hangover Part II. On the one hand, I am so appreciative of Warner Bros., and how they have blanketed the planet with trailers, and clips, and commercials. On the other hand, I wish that none of it were there. That people knew nothing. That they were walking in blind. Without pre-considering what the movie will be. So, for now, I will say nothing."

With Phil (Bradley Cooper) previously married, Doug (Justin Bartha) getting married in the original classic, and Stu (Ed Helms) getting married for a second time in The Hangover Part II, we wondered if it was possible that Alan (Zach Galifianakis) would get married off in this grand finale. Craig Mazin says, "Don't count on it."

" I don't think that Alan would ever get married. I can't say either way, but Alan is really a child. He doesn't understand what men and women do. There is that great line in the first movie, "Don't let the beard fool you. He is just a child." If Alan got married, I don't think he would understand what is going on."

Finally, Craig Mazin joked that The Hangover Part III would have a Fight Club style ending, with the big reveal being that Stu, Phil, and Alan are all a part of Doug's psyche.

"(It will) be kind of like Newhart. It was all Doug the whole time. The last shot reveals that he has been in a VA hospital. He is a sixty-nine year old Vet, he only has one leg...It's a little bit like Jacob's Ladder. He is actually a killer. He has killed a lot of people. Its like Angel Heart, where we go back through, and we see that it was (just Doug) the whole time. That is a great idea. (Laughs)"

The Hangover Part II is in theaters this Memorial Day weekend, looking to break a couple of box office records. Go see it!

All I'm going to say is..the movie was funny BUT it's the EXACT same sh*t as the first, same beginning and end only thing different is the setting, everything else is pretty much regurgitated layout as the first, the 3rd will be just the same.....now i have to give Warner Bros a round of applause cause that sh*t is a pure money grab kudos, cause we will watch this over n over

What if they do the third one in a place that's not known for partying and they still find a way to get into trouble. Maybe Canada or Switzerland?
