Actress Rashida Jones stars on a hit TV series and recently appeared in an Academy Award nominated film, but her biggest show business honor will come this fall when she appears with Kermit, Miss Piggy and all their friends in The Muppets.
Rashida Jones discusses her role opposite Kermit and the rest of the Muppets in their upcoming new film
The actress, who is best known for her work on the NBC series Parks and Recreation and in the film The Social Network, will play a network executive who is working with The Muppets. The new film is written by Jason Segel and Nick Stoller, the writer and director of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. In addition to Rashida Jones and Jason Segel, the film also stars Oscar nominee Amy Adams (The Fighter) and Oscar winner Chris Cooper (The Town). The Muppets, which opens in theaters on November 23rd, will mark the loveable-characters' first big screen appearance in over a decade.
We recently had a chance to sit down and speak with actress Rashida Jones while she was out promoting her new independent film Monogamy, which opens in theaters on March 18th. We took the opportunity to also ask her about working on The Muppets and the actress began by discussing what it was like to work with the beloved characters.
"It was ridiculous. It was pretty great. It was always weird from beginning to end. I'm so impressed with The Muppet performers because they infuse life into these little felt things. So much so that there were a couple of scenes where I forgot that Kermit was not a real person. When they were doing my coverage in our scene they asked me if I wanted Kermit or a tennis ball. I was like, I want Kermit, I'm not doing a tennis ball movie this is The Muppets!"
We followed up by asking the actress if she has scenes with any other Muppets besides Kermit.
"Yes. I also had a scene with every single Muppet where I'm just yelling at them. That's the other thing, I'm kind of mean to them in this movie and that was so hard. I'm a TV executive so they kind of work for me. It was hard to be mean to them but The Muppet performers are so cool. They let me roughhouse Kermit a little bit, which was kind of cool."
Rashida Jones also went on to tell us that in addition to acting in the film she had an opportunity to actually be a Muppet performer in one scene.
"I did a little bit of puppet work on the movie. There was a scene where they needed Muppet extras and there were not enough people because it was the end of the night. So I was like, I'll do it! They were so cool and they let me do it. But it is really hard to hold your arm up like that. I had cramps in my hands the next day from operating the mouth."
We finished our discussion with Rashida Jones by asking her to tell us the name of the The Muppet that she operates in the film.
"She was in the Orchestra. I don't think she's been used since the Jim Henson days. I named her Dolores. They were cool with that."
The Muppets was released November 23rd, 2011 and stars Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, Donald Glover, Danny Trejo. The film is directed by James Bobin.
