@photoman, @lastwerdz the only reason Carpenter is named the master of terror is because of 'Halloween'. You know that right? But yeah, he's not the master of terror. No horror director acclaims that title...yet.

First sentence in this article says "John Carpenter's The Ward is one of the scariest movies of the summer." Well if that's so, then what's the scariest movie gonna be this summer?

@photoman ya i agree, although he has made some very scary movies (well at least when i was a kid they scared me) but he also made some un -"master of terror" movies.
Starman, Elvis, Escape from New York/L.A, Big Trouble in LIttle China, They Live, Ghost of MArs and even Vampires which was much more action oriented than horror.
so ya, i agree 100%

Not much to look at in this clip but i am really crossing my fingers here.
@lastwerdz Cronenberg was more of a psycholiogical thriller type guy and his films over the past decade aren't really horror films (eXistenZ, Spider, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises to name a few) are not horror but still damn good films. I have said it before and will again Cronenberg has adapated with the times and continues to make fantastic movies. This is something that many older filmakers have a hard time pulling off such as we have seen with Craven recently.
Carpenter was a genius for his time and almost all of his films have been remade so that says a lot but lets just hope he is taking this with fresh eyes and not trying to replicate his 80's era.

The only directors who have made a solid career by devoting themselves to horror are John Carpenter and David Cronenberg.
Argento is a great but he has this "style over substance" approach, Romero is a great storyteller but not much of a visual artist, Hooper never took off after TCM and Craven made 3 worthy films.
So, Carpenter is not the sole Master of Terror, he shares that nickname with Cronenberg.
