Fede confirmed this, explaining that the film has to be recut to get an R rating. So far, we know that the film includes multiple scenes of body mutilation, animal torture, and a bloody rape sequence as seen in the Sam Raimi original. It is not known how much of these gory story elements are being pulled back, or what is being edited.
This is what Fede Alvarez had to say on his personal Twitter account.
@woozytribe Was proud of scoring a NC17 when submitted! But we had to cut stuff out to get an R and get the film into theaters.
— Fede Alvarez(@fedalvar) January 28, 2013
While Tri-Star Pictures needs an R rating to release the film in theaters, Fede Alvarez confirmed during our recent set visit that there will be an unrated director's cut released on Blu-ray later in the year. We can most likely expect to see it around Halloween. To find out more about the film:
Evil Dead was released April 5th, 2013 and stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, Elizabeth Blackmore, Phoenix Connolly, Jim McLarty, Sian Davis. The film is directed by Fede Alvarez.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx You didn't prove anything to me as it's obvious that most horror films are torture porn duh.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx - I'm late to the party. To answer your original question, friend, would it per chance have anything to do with a necromorph chick cutting her tongue in half and frenching her freaked out girl friend? Lol. I know that's why my friends are going, who happen to be big fans of the originals.

@bawnian-dexeus -- That's the entire point of this movie. I believe the director said that things get crazy very early in the movie, and it doesn't stop until the very end. It's torture porn, plain and simple. Let's just see how well it's executed.

@ghostman -- I wasn't defending them? I was showing you that they are all, in essence, at the same level. You made "The Evil Dead" seem like it was superior against the flock, and I proved you wrong. Dude, it's pretty obvious this will fit under the "torture porn" genre; this article proves it.
If you enjoy "torture porn", that's fine. But, at least have the balls to own up to it. Stop denying the blatant facts.

@ghostman Well, after the red band trailer...hard to ignore the theatricals of mutilation and not call it torture porn. Bit that's just me

Ghostman
@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Yeah, that's what I've been saying all the time about the Saw movies (since I love them) and everyone calls them "Torture porn." We can't deny that they are overly gory and only showcase the blood and guts without much thought into movies plot. Why are you defending these movies if you know they are considered by many as "torture porn"? Besides, you haven't even seen this remake of the Evil Dead so we both wouldn't know if it'll be torture porn or not.

@ghostman -- No, not really. In "Saw", a man (from what I garnered based on brief research) wanted people to appreciate their life, so he made them participate in a grisly game to show them the 'error' of their ways. In "Hostel", human trafficking is spotlighted, as people are bought and sold to sick individuals looking to indulge in their darkest fantasies. And now we have "The Evil Dead", a movie about a group of teenagers who awake a curse and reap it's nightmare. Overall, all of them have shallow, but direct plots that may or may not substantiate their existence. "The Human Centipede", though, seems to be the worse of the bunch. I think that's the definition of "torture porn".
By all means, do so. But, you can't invalidate what I'm saying. Best to ignore it?

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Their's a difference from this movie and other movies that you call "torture porn." Movies like Saw, Hostel, Human Centipede are torture porn. This on the other hand actually has a story and has a purpose behind the disgusting things that happen to the movies characters. They don't do it for the hell of it. It has a reason behind it.
Also, I was being sarcastic with what I said to you earlier, however, I will not let your negativity towards this movie affect my opinion/hype/anticipation for this film.

@ejk1 -- I don't remember anything like that in the original, so that's an additional reason I find this movie to be torture porn. They're blatantly advertising the film's graphic depictions and boasting about the taboo rating. When the director spends more time discussing the film's rating/content than he is the actual movie, you know something's wrong. Albeit, he's given more validity than most, given the source material.

Animal torture means I am not watching this. Me no like.

@ghostman -- I never said that, now did I? Misleading =/= exclusion; there's a difference. The editing department might've made the scenes that you saw in the trailer more believable, and terrifying in the trailer than they actually are in the full-length movie. They could seem coherent here, and incoherent there.
Actually read my post, next time. Properly, at that.

@ghostman@ROFLitschristian -- Not to burst your bubble, but trailers are THE most misleading marketing tool out there. We all know what trailers did for "In Time", and how that movie actually turned out, among others.

@ROFLitschristian That trailers gives me chills every time I watch it. If the movie is anything like that, we're both in for a real frighteningly good time!

That's great news! Makes me happy to know they'll give the fans the original NC-17 version on an Unrated Cut when it is released on blu-ray.
As for the movie coming out, I'm f*cking excited for it! The fact that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell helped produce and pick out the director for this movie, means they are involved with this remake. From the Red Band trailer I've seen (think I watched it over 10 times) this has got to be the best horror film remake that has ever come out in a long time.

ROFLitschristian
@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx I'm not considering it torture porn, but I can see why someone would say that. The only reason I'm looking forward to it is because it looks downright disturbing! Not Human Centipede or Saw disturbing, but consistent nightmare disturbing! The Red Band trailers alone put me on edge, and I'm someone who has been scared by 3 movies his entire life! If a trailer puts my in that position, imagine what the film will do.

Don't care either way. Obviously their going back to the editing room is strictly for financial purposes, but for my own selfish reasons, I feel like they're doing themselves a disservice by shying away from the NC-17.

My twisted mind was sold when I saw the necromorph chick cutting her tongue in half and frenching her friend. That's the twisted, f*cked up, dark humor that made the first and especially the second films a hit.
