Emma Thompson Not Returning for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

It seems that Hogwarts will be one professor short with its last installment. According to MTV Movies Blog, actress Emma Thompson will not be returning for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and instead will be making a sequel to Nanny McPhee.

"No, no, no," Thompson said when asked if she'll return to Hogwarts. "I'm making my own Nanny McPhee next year. They mean much more to me."

Thompson has appeared as Professor Sybil Trelawney in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, filming Nanny McPhee between the two films. She also added some details about the new Nanny McPhee film.

"The working title is 'Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang'," she revealed. "It's not a sequel, actually, it's a new story." She also added, "[The second film] is set one hundred years later; the only thing that is the same is Nanny McPhee," she explained. "It's about two families: A family of country children, and a family of town children, [both] during the war. So it's about evacuees, and the father is away at war. So this time, the lone parent is the mother. That's what it's about: The big war, and a war between these two sets of extremely different children."

When asked to explain why she chose Nanny McPhee over Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the writer/actress offered this.

"The Harry Potters are great big franchises that are something I'm not emotionally attached to or necessarily particularly creatively attached to," Thompson explained. "That's more like doing a turn, whereas the Nanny McPhees are something I've written. The art is in those films, they're very handmade, they're something that's very close to me. Those are the ones I really care about."

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 was released November 19th, 2010 and stars Bill Nighy, Emma Watson, Richard Griffiths, Harry Melling, Daniel Radcliffe, Julie Walters, Bonnie Wright, Rupert Grint. The film is directed by David Yates.

Nanny McPhee was released January 27th, 2006 and stars Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Kelly Macdonald, Thomas Sangster, Eliza Bennett, Jennifer Rae Daykin, Raphaƫl Coleman, Samuel Honywood. The film is directed by Kirk Jones.

I was gonna freak, but I got my Emmas mixed up. As much as I'd love to see her dropping crystal balls on peoples heads, she really didn't have a big part in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." Not that I remember anyway.

ohhhhhh Thompson not Watson...i thought they were cutting out Hermione for a second, yeah, theres really no need for trelawney, all she does is throw a bunch of crystal balls at people in the final battle, no biggie indeed

She's well disguised with those huge eyeglasses and that crazy messed up hairstyle. I think they can get another actress to play the part and nobody will notice too much. Hell, if they can replace Dumbledore due to the death of the late Richard Harris, they can definitely replace Professor Trelawney with another actress. No biggie.

Hmmm...well, in a filmer's perspective, her part in the story is already done. The prophecy has been exposed, so, she doesn't really have to be in the films anymore. I like her playing that character, but it's a decision I can live with.

What Duke said makes sense. But she's not really in it at all; other than the battle at the end {as far as I can remember - might have to dust off my copy} so no big deal. Though I'm sure somebody's going to complain, and complain, and.....

    Definitely looking forward to this
