Emma Stone Says Spider-Man's Web Is Mechanical

Emma Stone told MTV News that in the upcoming Untitled Spider-Man Reboot, Spider-Man, played by Andrew Garfield has web-shooters that are of the mechanical nature as opposed to organic webbing as seen in the three Spider-Man's starring Tobey Maguire.

Emma Stone Says Spider-Man's Web Is Mechanical

When asked about what the mysterious metal discs on the inner wrists of Andrew Garfield, as seen in the first official photo of director Marc Webb's reboot, Emma Stone replied:

"It's a device," Emma Stone said.

Asked whether her character, Gwen Stacy, would see any action in the film, Stone opted to keep fans guessing about that element of the film, too.

"You're just going to have to wait and see," she said.

The Amazing Spider-Man comes to theaters July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Irrfan Khan, C. Thomas Howell. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

@monkeyiron 2.0 i agree with u, even stan lee said when toby did the first spiderman said he wished he thought of that. and i know that in the comic book peter invents the mechanical web device but the organic way is so much cooler and he want run out of web if he produces it

They've already found ways to make him experience untimely losses of his ability to use webs through various storytelling devices (e.g., his powers turning off and on when his genes start to mutate). It's not something they can only do with mechanical web shooters.

Still, like I said, I don't care either way.

@ejk, absolutely true, but I don't think that will be the case. I too think they could very easily go overboard with the idea, but we're not even sure if they're gonna feature the risk of his cartridges running out, let alone make it redundant. I have faith in the team, so I hope they put the device to good, appropriate use.

@Messenger, that was The Spectacular Spider-Man franchise, right? Well, I think they'll be more conservative than the show was with the web-shooters. Lol.

@incmob, not a half bad idea, although it would be a democratic response to fan boys of both organic webbing and the web-shooters. I say no compromise is needed, and they're just sticking with the web shooter route.

    @Supes, @Diaigma, and @Dave, thanks.

on another note... could it be... and i am just saying... could it be that he does have organic webs, but needs the device to control it, much like say the spout of a whip cream canister, or like a lever of a fire extinguisher??? ... after all, all she said was it was a device. I could be 150% wrong on this, but there is that possibility as well, that they will have it 50/50.

@narrator... excellent info for those that dont know! although they tried with the last by having peter lose his powers when he was in love too much (almost as ridiculous of a scapegoat as the forgettable kiss superman gave to lois lane...lol) but i dont think they succeeded with that at all.

Well I gusse that will mess the movie up seeing that Organic webs are more realistic and I wonder how they will explain The use of a teenager with with no money can have both the money and technology to make such device anyway they should just keep organic instead. Oh can we please call this movie Ultimate Spider-Man

Spider-Man for me has been one of the most fascinating comic book series I've grown attached to. A hero that dealt with issues of real life while at the same time choosing to live an alternate one of excitement and fantasy. "With great power comes great responsibility." says Uncle Ben. Words that the hero would take to heart. We got to watch Spider-Man grow and mature through the pages of a comic book and weekly newspaper comic strip. When I saw that there was going to be a big screen adaptation of it years ago with Sam Raimi at the helm--honestly--I had fears. I knew there were going to be "organic" changes made to the story in general, not just Spidey. Still, overall, the film proved to be an exciting take on the mythology. I wasn't too overly conscious with the first one though I noted things for myself. It took its time and told a story that had a beginning, that nearly resembled the source material it was inspired by. It had a middle and it had a break leaving the possibilities of later installments wide open. I understood-well the geek in me understood-why there was a need to make Spidey's web organic. In a twisted way, it made sense with his genetic mutation. Still, as the series went on as well crafted as the first one still is, I longed for the Spider-Man I'd grown to know.

When they spoke of a reboot, I wasn't too unlike any of the rest of you. I scoffed and threw up my hands looking to the sky asking, "WHY?!" But then I continued to read along with the progress. We're all getting the same information as it comes so I don't know any more or less than anyone else on the outside of the studio looking in. But I began to pay attention to the casting. I payed attention to their intentions with this script and before even reading this I had an "a ha!" moment. Like a Zack Snyder or Christopher Nolan or David Goyer, they are trying to be loyal to those who have shown their loyalties every weekend at the comic book shops waiting for the next bundle of books to hit the shelves...spending bubblegum money just to see what happens next. Those classic battles. Those classic characters. The villains-oh my! Now we get to see Spider-Man the way we remember him. Granted, that is if it's done right. The web cartridges, the love triangles, the pulse pounding suspense of impending doom. I look forward to seeing this classic rejuvenated through a new series. It may just have a pay-off in the end.

Yeah but I remember watching the cartoons and the running out of web happened like every episode, got old, quick.

  14. Diaigma

Exactly, @Narrator - giving characters limitations adds to the tension. Running out of webbing from his device is a whole lot more convincing than "I ran out of webbing because my love life sucks" :P

@Supes - after Webb's character driven 500 Days of Summer, Garfield's TSN, and Stone's Easy A, I can see where this thing is headed, and it looks great so far :)

  18. Dan

@ejk1 That's IF they go overboard with that idea. If it's used conservatively, that won't be a problem.

  20. ejk1

Yeah, but there's a little problem with that, @Narrator. They can't use that situation too many times, otherwise it becomes nothing more than a crutch for the story to lean on, like the kidnapping of MJ was in the previous series. While I understand your point, the absence of web fluid should only occur once so as to keep the series unpredictable. I don't want to watch Spider-Man movies with the knowledge that the ending won't occur until after he loses his webbing ability. It will damage the enjoyment of what was onscreen previous to this moment(well, at least my enjoyment).

  23. The Narrator: The Better Man

@Josh, webbing from Spidey's cartridges usually tend to run out when he needs them most, which makes our favroite web-crawler have to think of soemthing resourceful to save the day, or risk getting his ass kicked (usually both). With the organic webbing, there was never that increased sense of risk for Pete. Now we'll see that in the film, and that will bring to the table an added sense of realism and danger, which will in turn benefit the script. Ergo... this helps the story more than you give it credit for.

  24. nerblesmcgee

well at least they're are sticking to the source material. i'll bet there will be one part where he runs out of web in time when he really needs it. In spiderman 2 he was running out cuz he didn't wanna be spiderman anymore. but, Peter Parker's a boy genius so i'm sure they've found a realistic scientific way for him to produce web. rock n roll
