Emma Stone Is Spider-Man's Gwen Stacy!

Emma Stone joins Spider-Man reboot as Gwen Stacy
Emma Stone has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Spider-Man film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matthew Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures. Stone has been tapped for the role of Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The casting continues an association between Sony Pictures Entertainment and the actress, who previously starred in Superbad, The House Bunny, and Zombieland, all for Columbia Pictures; she may currently be seen in Screen Gems' hit comedy Easy A, and takes a cameo role in Screen Gems' upcoming Friends with Benefits.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "It's been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma's star rise as an actress. She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill."

Marc Webb added, "The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde."

Emma Stone can currently be seen starring in Screen Gems' hit comedy Easy A. Next year, she will star in Warner Bros.' Crazy Stupid Love opposite Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and in The Help, the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel; she also takes a cameo role in Screen Gems' Friends with Benefits and will voice a role in DreamWorks Animation's comedy The Croods. Stone's recent credits include Paper Man, Zombieland, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The House Bunny, The Rocker, and Superbad.

The Amazing Spider-Man was released July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Campbell Scott. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

very curious as to how this movie turns out. as far as i'm concerned marc webb is prettty much an unknown director so i think it's a bold choice to bring him on to such an iconic character for a reboot only like five years after the trilogy ended. i'm just stoked about zack snyder and superman so its all good

The fact that she's a redhead? You all need to go look up her natural color. Like I said, with her upcoming schedule, I could see her wanting the part Gwen and not MJ. Be happy she's in the movie.

@Doctor_Carter...Marc Webb has done numerous music videos, several of which show how wide his talented spectrum goes. Look at the following videos for reference:

    Rough Landing Holly - Yellowcard
Ghost of You - My Chemical Romance
    21 Guns - Green Day
Dare You to Move - Switchfoot

Those are the first ones that come to mind, that I know he's done, and they all differentiate from the other. so yeah, I think he'll do fine with what ever is thrown at him.

As for everyones complaints about the reboot, again, if you are a Spidey fan, you know that it has far more potential than what we saw on the big screen. Granted Sp 1 and 2 were solid films. But this reboot gives room for a lot that the first franchise missed, and it gives us an all-around solid line-up. We have a script; co-written by James Vanderbeilt, along with several other talented writers, one of which worked on the past series. We have a solid/fresh director, who has creative talent, and is young enough to care about the fans more than the money. We have our main leads, both of which can act and fit their respective parts (well.. I really wish Stone was MJ.. whatever). So overall, this is not such a bad idea.

though i know most of us, if not all of us were expecting Emma to play MJ, due to the fact she could pull off the personality of the character and the fact shes a redhead, but remember, in spider-man 3 Bryce Dallas Howard is a natural redhead and they made her a blonde to play Gwen Stacey...

*Possible Spoilers!* As a longtime Spider-man fan, I am SO relieved to hear that they are going with Gwen Stacy as the main love interest for Peter Parker... Though Pete and MJ have a long rich history together, Gwen was Pete's first real love... and her tragic death has weighed on Pete's conscience ever since.

By casting Emma Stone as Gwen, I am hoping that the reboot will stick close to the storyline in which she dies, thus maintaining the emotional resonance with the characters, and delivering a powerful, moving experience for the audience...

There aren't too many movies in which the hero fails to save the girl... and as The Dark Knight proved, it is an emotional twist that helps captivate the audiences... So as a massive Marvel fan, I have faith in this reboot... (please, please, please don't disappoint!!!)

haha this is kinda funny, kirsten dunst was a blonde cast as MJ and Emma Watson is a redhead (but apparently naturally a blonde) cast as Gwen Stacy. they should have cast Donald Glover as Peter, would be perfect then.

Thanks, guys. I try to be passionate. I know sometimes I come off rude or in a bad light when I don't mean to. Spidey is my trademark hero and most of my friends on here know me as a Spidey purist. I just want them to do a Spidey story and get it right, for once. If they did a Marvel Animated Feature that was faithful to the comic, I'd be satisfied with that. I just don't understand why they can never get Spidey right. Sigh.

I like @CBF's passion. He just wants them to get it right. Sometimes I think a few of us should get together and put together our own script and try to sell it to somebody, we could probably do something killer.

Alright guys got some new info to anyone not looking up other sites...
    http://heatvision.hollywoodreporter.com/2010/10/emma-stone-in-spider-manas-gwen-stacy.html

Heat Vision Blog at Hollywood Reporter is reporting that "the casting process involved looking for actresses for both characters and the studio was really into Stone...for both characters. But as the search elongated, Columbia decided to focus on the more important role, Stacy." They are also saying "According to sources, Mary Jane will not appear in the first movie, so a Stacy storyline could give the new movie a potential extra dose of gravitas, depending on how closely the studio and filmmakers hew to Marvel Comics lore."

Well they won't be sticking to it all that closely, because supposedly this high school tween idea of Peter dating Gwen is definitely unfaithful to Marvel lore. Plus, Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy knew each other when Peter met Gwen. That info coming from your friendly neighborhood @CBF.
