Edgar Wright Completes Ant-Man Test Reel

Marvel Studios has no shortage of projects in various stages of development, although Ant-Man has been stuck in development longer than the rest. This long-awaited project may finally be moving forward, though, with news that director Edgar Wright filmed a test reel earlier this month.

The story centers on Hank Pym, a scientist who devised a way to shrink his size and control an army of ants with a special helmet he constructed. Last month, the writer-director said he hopes to shoot this superhero movie sometime next year, after he wraps on The World's End with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The filmmaker co-wrote the Ant-Man screenplay with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).

These early reels are often used to gauge a response from the studio, about a filmmaker's style or the overall look of a particular project. Directors such as Zack Snyder (300), Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles), and Guillermo del Toro (At the Mountains of Madness) made similar reels to help their projects get the green light.

We'll have to wait and see if Edgar Wright's reel will lead to the new Ant-Man feature.

Ant-Man comes to theaters November 6th, 2015. The film is directed by Edgar Wright.

@ruforeel I've been saying that since as long as Wright has been attached. I wouldn't have thought of Pegg out of the blue, but I think that combo could have just the right tone for this film. However, if they want to go more of the love story route with this story, and centre it around Ant-Man and Wasp, Pegg might be the wrong choice. Not that I don't think he could be convincing in a romantic role, but he might not be easy to sell as that kind of leading man.

I've been a Marvel comic fan for over 30 years (Hey I own 2 houses so no jokes about living in the basement... it's just cooler down there :) I can't say Antman ever really caught my interest however Henry Pym did. He's been sort of the mad scientist of the Avengers especially the last few years. There are lots of brilliant scientists in the Marvel universe some probably smarter than Pym but he is the "out there" guy doing stuff like the "Infinite Avengers Mansion" in quantum scale. I hope they capture that edgy sort of personality that says "I might just snap at any moment if one more insane thing happens to me".

@Bawnian&#169-Dexeus I'm roughly taking it as style and the way I tell a story.
Actually that could work as a storyboard and shows them of what a director is able to do.

The first time I heard of Ant-man I wasn't sure if I liked him or not.

@jayaottley Wait, what about At World's End? Are you talking about the Pirates of The Caribbean movie? I'm lost here...

Will this movie be part of the Avengers universe and does it have a connection to Iron Man 3, Thor 2, and Captain American 2?

Also can't see any tweets from Wright about viewing footage for Ant-Man... So I really have very small validity on this article, especially when they've just started principal photography on At World's End

@ruforeel I think Wright needs to scrap Ant Man and bring us Brandon

I wonder where they found the time to actually film the test.

I think Simon Pegg would be deadly as Ant-Man. Just a thought.

@jayaottley I am right there with you. I was not interested in an Antman story until Wright showed interest.

@jayaottley In this case, I really don't know. But, there are possible answers. Maybe they wanted to do something that the studios didn't and were finally convinced.

@skywise I guess I was never fond of Ant-Man, but I'll watch it if Wright and Cornish are writing with Wright in the directing chair.

Also hoping that Wright starts doing a Brandon Generator flick, as well.

@bawnian-dexeus But why would you need to do that when you've already been signed on to write and direct with producers already backing you.

@zender It helps give the studio an idea of what you want them to sing on. A prototype. If they like, they will buy

what is a test reel? Is it like a teaser, telling the entire story in 10 short minutes.

@jayaottley Hank Pym is not a well loved character but it would make sense that he would appear in Iron Man since they are both geniuses. I alwasy prefered Goliath but Antman is not only a classic Marvel character but a mainstay of the avengers.

Hmmmm, read some where different that Disney-Marvel intend to have a post-credits sequence for Ant-Man in the end of Iron Man 3 as well that Hank Pym may possibly be involved in Iron Man 3 as he is connected to Chen Lu (who was Andy Lau was playing).
