Weta's Richard Taylor promises more Dwarves in The Hobbit
About the film, which he is not allowed to divulge too much on, Taylor said:
The lovely thing about The Hobbit is that the race of the dwarves comes to the forefront in the story, and [we'll depict] the uniqueness of the collection of the dwarves. Gimli had an incredible presence, of course. But he was only one character. And it's fantastic to think that we're going to be able to develop the dwarves to such a higher degree. The richness of their culture. The fact that through so many different dwarfs, you'll get to appreciate their cultural differences, where they come from, them as a people. We haven't actually started fully on pre-production yet - we're still in the design phase - but it's a wonderful opportunity to work with a unique director in [director] Guillermo [del Toro] and continue to work with Peter [Jackson] as the producer, who is so heavily involved.
You can read more with Richard Taylor on our site when our full interview with him goes live in the DVD section this week.

Nothing against the illustrious James Earl Jones, but I don't think he's right for Smaug, whose voice requires a very smug quality. Someone mentioned Vin Diesel, which I think would work, but honestly I can't think of anyone better than Perlman.
Also, McKellan will be playing Gandalf, but they are recasting Bilbo as a younger actor because of Holm's age.

are they using Ian McKellen and Ian Holm as Gandalf and Bilbo?

James Earl Jones would be a great Smaug. Any idea who would play the lead dwarf, Thorin?

@narrator: Well, I didn't know Serkis voiced King Kong, but really, he didn't have a whole lot of actual dialogue then did he, just gorilla noises, Smaug on the other hand actually does speak. And as far as I knew there was no news on his casting, he was on the casting call they posted a few weeks ago.

@narrator: is there a source for that? I've never heard any rumors about Smaug's casting.

The Narrator: The Better Man
It was said by Peter Jackson that Serkis will be Smaug if he has his way. Besides if you want "power", he did the voice of King Kong... I think he'll do Smaug just fine. ;)

@mosorwvlad: Well, he's already Gollum, and I really can't imagine his voice inspiring the fear and trembling of Smaug the Magnificent. Perlman however would be great.

It wouldn't be impossible for Perlman to play both a dwarf and Smaug. With a little alteration to his voice, JR Davies played both Gimli and Treebeard in the LotR trilogy.

Can't wait for this movie. Really hope that story about Brian Cox playing a dwarf a few months back is true.

I can't wait to see who they cast as the dwarves. I thing Ron Perlman should definitely be one, maybe even Thorin. Or else Perlman should be the voice of Smaug.

I really can't wait for this. I hope it doesn't get delayed too long because of the studio's recent financial problems.
