DVD Market Declines 5.7% in 2008
The DVD sell-through market dropped 6.3% in the past year and, while Blu-ray sell-through did make some headway, standard DVD sell-through dropped 9.5%. The numbers also indicate that the brunt of the dipping sales is coming from new releases, with a 20% drop in sales for new titles and only a 6% decline in catalog titles.
The report, from the film Sandford Bernstein, predicted that the DVD market will drop 7% in 2009, 6% in 2010 and 7% in 2011.

Yeah I've completely stopped buying DVD's in favor of Blu-Ray. I agree with Hessian to a point..not buying blu-rays for the movies I already have(Except when Lord of the Rings comes out on bd of course.). But watching DVDs in an upscaled player is nothing like the picture I get on my bds tho so...
Furiousangel2 has it right though, the movie releases have been horrible. This past year I probably bought like 12 movies. 12 movies in a year!? I remember buying loads more the year before that. The quality of movies has just gone down the drain

Over the past year I have noticed that a lot of the new titles are lower in price as well as better sales on existing releases. It has been all over the news that consumer spending is way down because of the economy and people are trying to save money by cutting their 'entertainment' budget. I do not plan on 'upgrading' anytime soon. The regular DVD picture is fine to me and I can buy twice as many than I would be able to should I have gone blu-ray.

My take on this is that, I do not think it is the format that has lost steam but more the movies that have been released.

Agree! I stop buying DVD and I create a wish list with Blu-Ray titles of the movies I want...I know Blu-Ray prices will eventually drop so...And I will NOT replace my DVD's because they're not Blu-Ray...That's dumb and more $$$ to spent!!!

I completely agree with HESSIAN. I just spent the last three years building up my DVD collection, and I have well over 300 DVDs. I'm not about to spend thousands more dollars to upgrade to some newfangled system that'll give me better picture quality and better sound. No, that's just dumb.

What a sh*t load of f*ck!! Jesus Christ...if they do away with DVD, I will beat someone's ass. Looks like everyone's buying Blu-ray. Why spend more $$$ on a slightly better image? Slap a DVD into an up-scaling HDMI DVD player and BAM...nice clean crisp image. I'm as big a movie buff and electronics hi-tech guy as the next, but I love DVD, always will. I can still enjoy great hi-def images and sound without coughing up a sh*t load of money for Blu-ray. I have a vast DVD collection, and the declines I see here in sales is disturbing.
