DreamWorks Developing Martin Luther King Jr. Biopic

DreamWorks has picked up the life rights to Martin Luther King Jr. and plans to develop a biopic on the assassinated civil rights leader, according to Variety.

Steven Spielberg, Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones will produce.

King, who was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis at the age of 39, copyrighted his speeches, books and famous works during his lifetime. The DreamWorks project marks the first film to be authorized by King's estate and gives the producers the right to utilize King's intellectual property -- including his famous "I Have a Dream" speech delivered during the 1963 March on Washington -- to create the definitive portrait of his life.

"We are all honored that the King Estate is giving us the opportunity to tell the story of these defining, historic events," Spielberg said. "It is our hope that the creative power of film and the impact of Dr. King's life can combine to present a story of undeniable power that we can all be proud of."

A King film has been a longtime dream for Spielberg and DreamWorks CEO and co-chairman Stacey Snider, who has been working feverishly on acquiring the rights since exiting Paramount Pictures and setting up a solo enterprise.

King's son Dexter, who is chairman and CEO of the King Estate, has been embroiled in a legal tussle with his siblings Bernice King and Martin Luther King III over who controls the personal papers of their late mother, Coretta Scott King, among other things.

King, who was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and discrimination, was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004.

"In trying to tackle such an ambitious project, the question we had to ask ourselves is, 'Why now?' " Snider said. "The answer lies in MLK's own words: 'All progress is precarious.' With every step forward, new obstacles emerge and we must never forget that his life and his teachings continue to challenge us every day to stand up to hatred and inequality."

  1. Illuminati

this is a more deserving biopic than the other recent one!

But you just know the usual suspects are going to be rounded up for the lead. WILL SMITH, JAMIE FOX, and with his recent popularity TERRENCE HOWARD.

I am so excited because, unfortunately, racism and ignorance still exist today, and I think this film will address those issues head on. I have no doubt that this film will be a masterpiece.

Also, why do we need an MLK biopic? Everyone already knows that he was a great man and everything that he did. I mean seriously, is anyone going to see this movie and be anymore enlightened than they already are?

I think they should get someone like Tyler Perry or maybe even Chi McBride to play MLK, Will Smith and Jamie Foxx have a monopoly on every historic black role. And for once I agree with you Newkill, Native Americans are constantly looked over, the only movie I can think of that does Native Americans any justice is Dead Man, and even in that the main character is white. I went to the Grand Canyon through the Native American reservation last year and everyone was bitching about how expensive everything was. Well, that is the only thing those people have. The US Government gave them a big ole pile of nothing out in the desert and thats how they make their living, sh*ts really f*cked up.

Yeah well, the enslaving of all those races are over, but the Native American minority are still being ridden over in our own country. I don't want to see no more f*cking Malcolm X, Luther King, or f*cking Rosa Parks biopics. Where are the biopics of John Herrington and other great Native American humanitarians.

I was just about to say that Moviemaniack. It's always Will Smith that portrays the legends. Although they got Jamie Foxx to play Ray Charles. They might get him to play Martin Luther King.
