Director David Yates, whose Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 has been called the best in the series, is planning to helm a big screen version of the popular British sci-fi TV series Dr. Who.

The film is being produced by the BBC, who hope to turn this intergalactic alien Time Lord into a worldwide theatrical franchise. About the project, David Yates stated the following.

"We're looking at writers now. We're going to spend two to three years to get it right. It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena. The notion of the time-traveling Time Lord is such a strong one, because you can express story and drama in any dimension or time."

The original series aired from 1963 to 1989, and was then rebooted in 2005, and continues to air in the states on BBC America. It is one of the BBC's most lucrative properties.

Both American and British screenplay writers are being sought to properly adapt Dr. Who for the big screen.

Dr. Who is in development . The film is directed by David Yates.

Doctor Who should never be made into a movie. I knew that this would happen due to the growing popularity and due to the fact that series 6 was more story driven instead of the past series being their stand alone stories. The only way they could actually pull this off is to have it be a sort of origin story to actually talk about the doctors past. I don't know who they would cast as the Doctor though.

While I'd like to keep an open mind about this, I don't think Doctor Who fits a cinematic medium. The very nature of his travels are episodic. What is the point? Also David Yates? No thank you.

I like the "Doctor Who" series, but I'm not too sure about this. Would this be connected in some way to the show? Or is it a reboot?

Not entirely sure how to feel about this. I mean, I love Doctor Who with all my heart, and am a huge fan of David Yates. But I don't know that I want a movie. Well actually if it was a part of the 11th Doctor's story I would be down.
