Kevin Costner has become the latest actor to join the cast of Quentin Tarantino's Western Django Unchained.

The actor will make a rare turn as a villain, portraying Ace Woody, who trains the male slaves to fight for wealthy white men's entertainment on the Candyland ranch of Calvinn Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Ace Woody also turns the female slaves into prostitutes on the ranch, and is compared to Christoph Waltz's sadistic Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. The story centers on Jamie Foxx's title character, who hires a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to find his missing wife. Samuel L. Jackson also stars in Django Unchained.

Quentin Tarantino is directing Django Unchained from his own original screenplay. It isn't known when production will start yet, although a release date has already been set for December 25, 2012. Kevin Costner will likely film his Ace Woody role after he wraps on Man of Steel, where he plays Pa Kent.

Django Unchained was released December 25th, 2012 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, Christoph Waltz, Amber Tamblyn, Zoe Bell. The film is directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Solid news here, should work out perfectly for Tarantino and can only help Costner's career as well, since he hasn't been making as many great films like he use to.

I would love to see Costner back a the top of his game and Tarantino, like the Coen Brothers is a genius at getting great performances out of his actors.

I am super excited. And I would normally make a very mean spirited joke about Costner, but since it's a western, I shall hold my damn tongue.

@ejk1 Okay. He's not a badass; he's a hard ass. It still doesn't change my point. He's been the only gleam of light in the decline of the western genre over the last 25 years.

@thedude-abides I wouldn't call Costner a bad ass, but it is a fairly good move for him. Costner seems poised to make the latter part of 2012 his springboard back to the upper echelon of Hollywood, what with roles in this and Man of Steel a month earlier.

Kevin Costner as the villain in a western?!! What!! Talk about casting at its absolute finest. Aside from John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, there has been no greater western badass over the last 25 years than Kevin Costner, but up until now he's always played the hero.

Now he gets to take off the proverbial gloves and try his hand at the villain, and I for one can't wait to see what kind of badassery he has in store for the villainous role. But if Wyatt Earp is any indication of the depths he can take his character playing a hero no less, then it will most unmistakably be something to see. Just one more reason why Tarantino is the man.
