Director Mark Romanek had very dark ideas in bringing the classic fairy tale Cinderella to life as a live action movie for Disney. The proposed material was so edgy, in fact, that the studio has now parted ways with Romanek, who was collaborating on the screenplay.

Cate Blanchett is set to star as the evil stepmother with Saoirse Ronan, Alicia Vikander and Gabriella Wilde all competing for the title role. Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz will continue working on the screenplay as the hunt for a new director begins.

Here is a statement released by the studio confirming the separation.

"The Walt Disney Studios and Mark Romanek have parted ways on Disney's Cinderella project. We are committed to moving the project forward and have begun the search for a new director. The team here at Disney respects Mark as both a director and a friend, and we hope to find something to work on together in the future."

The dark material proposed by Romanek should have come as no surprise to Disney. The man made his feature length directorial debut with the dark thriller One Hour Photo, which starred Robin Williams as a man obsessed with and stalking the family whose photos he develops on a regular basis. It has not yet been revealed what the director was planning to do with Cinderella, but there's a good chance it would have been more interesting than what we will eventually get from Disney.

Cinderella comes to theaters March 13th, 2015 and stars Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, Hayley Atwell, Stellan Skarsgård, Richard Madden, Lily James, Holly Grainger, Derek Jacobi. The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh.

@nicholaus and bawnian It's cause Hollywood has been announcing very dark and gritty retellings of classic fairy tales for a while and with Peter Pan getting it's own dark re-imagining, it just worries me that they will milk this whole "dark fairy tale adaptation" down to the ground.

@bawnian-dexeus -- If they brought the original tale -unaltered - in the light of a live-action film.

@mr-k -- Why not? Especially if they get a director like David Fincher, Guillermo del Toro, or Darren Aronofsky.

@nicholaus Yeah, i know about the original tale being bittersweet, I was referring to the DIsney version that was light on tone. Forgot to add it in my previous comment.

@mr-k -- Not really. If you read the original tale, it was bittersweet, at best.

@justatadmatt Yeah, hopefully they will find another director in time, for this movie to still be able to come out in 2014.

@artkid04 (bitch-slap) Hell no! He ruined The Golden Compass film adaptation, I don't want him to ruin this adaptation.

Although, It doesn't need to be a dark movie since Cinderella is a happy feeling kind of story.
