Director John Moore Upset Over Max Payne Getting an R Rating

Das Gamer recently interviewed Max Payne director John Moore, and the man is very upset about his film receiving an R rating. His claim is that the adult rating could greatly affect box office. Not one to shy away from his concerns, Moore stated, "The Motion Picture Association of America gave The Dark Knight a PG-13 rating and basically sucked Warner Bros.' (explicative)."

Both Moore and 20th Century Fox went into Max Payne with the intentions of making a PG-13 rated film. But the ratings board slapped the film with a big fat R, and now Moore has had to return to the editing room to cut the film down to size. What earned the film an R rating in the first place? Moore explained, "They said to me, the movie feels R. And I said, 'What the (explicative) is that, a group therapy session?' You can't do that. They're meant to judge content, not intent. They said the movie felt dark."

He continued, saying, "They really hung themselves with The Dark Knight. Every other filmmaker in town is knocking on their door saying, "Please sir, may I have my PG-13 rating and be as fair to my movie as you were to The Dark Knight."

Will there be an unrated version when the film comes out on DVD? Moore isn't quite sure, saying, "There's always that creative safety net that there is a platform for the ultimate version of the movie out there on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. But to be quite honest, I didn't go into this wanting it to be necessarily a hard R. I put a lot of kinetic violence in the movie because that's how the game feels, but I didn't go cutting people's heads off and ripping their eyeballs out just for the fun of it."

Max Payne is still slated for release on October 17th, 2008.

Max Payne was released October 17th, 2008 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Beau Bridges, Ludacris, Chris O'Donnell, Donal Logue, Amaury Nolasco, Kate Burton. The film is directed by John Moore.

Just hope there are lots of blood and gore for this movie. Adding some blown off body parts will be nice too, especially in slow-mo like the game.

I prefer R ratings...and i am a big batman fan and i was upset that the dark knight got a PG-13 rating i wanted it to be rated R...so John Moore should stop being a baby and let the movie stay at an R rating

Oh come on. It's kinda common since, if the game is rated "M", then the movie should be rated "R". Simple as that.

Boo Hoo director John Moore! Who knows why "Max Payne" is R...We really can't jude untill we see the film....but to compare "Max Payne" to "The Dark Knight" is like comparing apples to oranges...it's two (2) different movies!

YES!!! THANK YOU!!! If this wasn't R, I wouldn't have as much interest in the film. Movies that are PG-13, or under, generally suck. There are some PG-13 movies that are good (Transporter), but if you are gonna make a movie like this, make it R, please. Don't be like the latest installment of Die Hard, and make it something that SHOULD have been R, but wasn't. Besides, parents these days don't care about ratings. My parents don't! lol

Upset? How could you be upset? Who cares what the dark knight got? Max Payne simply wouldn't be Max Payne if it was anything less than an R rating. And I certainly would not like it at all if it got a PG13 tag slapped on it. Go R!

Ps, if Moore begs and pleas like a little sissy to get his film a 13 rating, Im gonna go to his house in the middle of the night, grab a bar of soap from his bathroom, and stuff it in a tube sock of my choice from his dresser before ultimately pummeling his face into a bloody deformed pulp. Then while unconscious, I will professionally tattoo the words 'R FOREVER BITCH' on to his forehead. Why? Because I can.

People really go off right away.

I think what got Moore pissed was that the MPAA Movie said that the movie felt Dark so it was given an R rating.

Now if you are basing it on that and not content as he is stating why was TDK given a pg-13. Now please TDk was a dark movie. The violence is there unless you assume he put that pencil in his pocket or that he was sticking a twistler in the guy's mouth and not a knife.

Moore does have a reason and so do other directors about ratings to be pissed.

I personally would rather like to see an R rating on a movie and push it to the limit.

News flash John Moore, I've played Max Payne before, and if it isn't a rated R movie, than I don't want to see it. In my mind, if it doesn't get an R rating, than it doesn't live up to the story that was set in the game. There was nothing nice or cudly as I can recall while playing that game.

i see the same flaws in max as punisher 2 is will have cheesy lines and some bad acting. and if its pg13 im gonna be pissed. zack snyder/john woo as the producers. tarintino/rodriguez as the writers. and speilberg as the director and mark as max with shawnne smith as moana and gene hackman. and matt damon. perfect crew and cast for the movie.

  17. NO NAME

Whats the big deal. If the game is M than the movie will be R. Does he need like a poster or a paper of guidelines or something to understand that. Retard doesn't matter anyway the movie doesn't look like something that everybody is going to go to the theater to see anyway. Plus all of these directors are just getting pissed because The Dark Knight is both making money and practically getting worshipped by critics. I mean lets face it The Dark Knight is probably the best critically reviewed movie of the year so far.

Wow John Moore is a whiner. How could he even try to make the film PG-13, when the game its based off is rated M? How would it greatly affect the box office when most of the people that are fans of Max Payne are already over 17? Plus the only real edgy part of TDK in my opinion was Two-Faces scarred left half, there wasnt any heavy language, no R-rated violence, and no sexual content ever. I think the only way to stay true to an adaptation of a video game thats rated M, is to expect to get the same rating in the movie biz, an R.

These filmmakers really need to shut the f*ck up about the dark knight. They're just pissed that a movie based on a comic is doing so well. Tdk wasn't even that violent. Get over it, your movie is going to bomb anyways, r rating or not.
