Director Joe Johnston talks about the status of Captain America
"We're in prep," Johnston says. "Rick Heinrichs is production-designing and we're set up down in Manhattan Beach [California]. It's the part of the process that I love the most," he enthuses. "We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures and say, 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could do this?' It's that phase of the production where money doesn't matter: 'Let's put all the greatest stuff up on the wall and [then later] see what we can afford.'" The film, he says at this early stage, will begin "in 1942, 1943" during World War II. "The stuff in the '60s and '70s [comic books] we're sort of avoiding. We're going back to the '40s, and then forward to what they're doing with Captain America now."
Captain America is slated for a July 22nd, 2011 release and is rumored to star Samuel L. Jackson.
Captain America: The First Avenger was released July 22nd, 2011 and stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci. The film is directed by Joe Johnston.

Well the parts where he's not wearing the outfit is what is going to either make or tank this film. He's gotta be able to act. Are they gonna get somebody all skinny that looks like the main lead for all the beginning parts before he becomes mr. buff?

Lets face it guys... he doesn't have to be an awesome actor. As long as he can hold his own, looks the part, and the story is good, it will be a good movie. As I am sure you can tell, I am a huge Wolverine fan. If the last X-men movie & origins have taught us anything, its that it doesn't matter how good the actor is (cause I think Jackman was/is great as Wolverine, even though he is too tall), it mainly all comes down to the story and who is directing.

Yeah this movie is getting a lot of news lately. Tatum isn't a bad dude, but he can't act, there's literally no point of having him in such an important role. I mean, look how much he messed up somebody as simple as Duke in GI Joe. Girls think he is hot, which is the only reason why anybody casts him in roles.

Agreed Illuminati. The Civil War changed a lot of my perspective for him. And Tatum is definitely not Cap. don't joke people. We might as well cast him as Shepard is a Mass Effect movie cuz he "looks like the part" right? Lol.
Can't wait for the real casting news.

i'm so impressed they are going the WWII route. best thing they could have done. Give them the chance to go serious with some solid, PVT RYAN/BAND OF BROTHERS type intense scenes. This will ground the story in the 'real' world. The history backdrop will also help gaining depth to the character
As for Chanum Tatum? so you guys want this to be a cartoon like G.I.JOE huh? WIth all the WWII attempt at making this rough you want to pressiy it up with that gender bender pinup? Come on guys, let's go beyond the looks (at least in this case lol)
i've never been a CAPY fan. But after reading the CIVIL WAR series, i certainly gained respect for the character. He is a taut character and requires someone who can handle that tension.

Oh and to answer Todd's question, I guess Sam Jackson doesn't even know when he is going to do his scene in Thor, since no one has contacted him since the Disney purchase of Marvel. Is his contract still good? We don't know. It scares me to think he hasn't heard anything related to him being in Thor other than him jokingly saying he saw his name in the cast list but nobody has told him when to show up lol. Then again, Thor just started shooting I think and they would only need Jackson for like a day at most. Most likely near the end of shooting anyway, unless he has a bigger role, but I doubt it, he doesn't seem like he would fit into Thor very well. I could see Nick Fury as a semi-important role in Captain America though for sure, maybe it's him who gets him into the program or something, that'd be cool. Or unthaws him, whichever.

Darkness300, was that a troll-ish comment? How would Cap be a p*ssy? Look at the guy lol. He is strong as f*ck and uses his hands like Batman, which makes him even cooler. Plus, he also throws his indestructable shield at bad people, which I can't wait to see on screen, some nazi fool getting clotheslined by his shield haha (that was thrown from a distance or up close and personal and getting punched/clotheslined in the face with the shield-ouch). Plus, he has a cool story. Nazis are just cool villians, and add in a really creepy one (Red Skull) with a guy that looks like Cap, who fights these bastards, then gets frozen and unfrozen in present time (kinda like Austin Powers) to face present danger etc. Pretty cool story for a superhero. It's unique actually, other than the whole "super-human project" thing, which is cliche' but technically, he was made before all these movies went over the top with that in their films. (Like Doom- which isn't even the game's actual plot btw).

LOL @ Public Enemies, Channing Tatum was in Public enemies for like 2 min running in a field lol, how about GI Joe for example putting him as Duke and then Captain America is not a stretch, plus this is a blockbuster they want to do, therefore they NEED a name people know of, not some "nobody", Channing tatum is a logical choice as Capt America

Re: DarkTower19 - Okay I have to admit that I have only seen him in two movies: Stop-loss, and Public Enemies. But what I saw wasn't bad. I admit it could be a stretch, but he is way more suited for the job than some of the other names I have heard thrown around. And I think he could pull it off. That being said, a Wolverine reference would be awesome! but I think Sony has those rights locked up (unfortunately). And I am all for the lesser known actors, but for the love of god! He better not be 35 to 40 years old. If the movie does take place in the 1940's, Cap is supposed to be in his early 20's

DarkTower19
Channing Tatum can act? When? Where? There's are a ton of Channing Tatumss out there. My vote is for a finding a lesser known actor for the role. Though, it won't really matter who it is as long as there is lots of Nazi killing and maybe a Wolverine reference that doesn't blow

Am I the only one who thinks that Channing Tatum should be cast as Steve Rogers? I know he has been in some bad movies (most of which I haven't seen), but he looks the All American part and he CAN act. Plus he is the right age.

Dr.Carter
Sounds exciting, I hope it mainly does take place during WWII and include the Red Skull in Germany trying to take over the world. Also it would be cool to get Bucky and at the end gives us a hint on him becoming Winter Soilder. Also Josh you are more than likely right but it may be Nick Fury recalling his memoirs with Captain America while they are trying to revive him.

@Todd89: Sam L Jackson is playing Nick Fury. Probably what will happen is the movie will start present day with SHIELD finding Cap frozen and most of the film will be his memories of the super soldier program in the 40s, ending with a present day scene that will tie in to the Avengers.
