Derek Hough and Lea Michele Eyed for Dirty Dancing Remake

Following quickly on the news that Michael Jackson's This Is It director and original Dirty Dancing choreographer Kenny Ortega is helming the Dirty Dancing remake, we're now starting to hear trickles of who may be cast in the film.

At the top of the list for Patrick Swayze's Johnny Castle is Derek Hough, best known as one of the dancers on Dancing with the Stars. Hough is set to make his feature film acting debut with the upcoming Cobu 3D, which centers on two star-crossed dancers who find themselves at the center of a bitter rivalry between their brothers' competing underground dance clubs.

Derek Hough is actively campaigning for the part of Johnny Castle, hoping that it will push his career in the same direction as Patrick Swayze. Producers may have different ideas, though, as Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford and Glee's Matthew Morrison are also being considered.

Though, its unlikely that Matthew Morrison will get the role, as Kenny Ortega and his crew are pushing to cast that show's Lea Michele in the role of Jennifer Grey's Frances "Baby" Houseman, and having two Glee alumni may prove to be a difficult sale. Also on Dirty Dancing's Baby radar are Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus. So, it seems they are casting on both nose and dance talent at this time.

Official casting announcements are expected soon.

Dirty Dancing comes to theaters July 26th, 2013. The film is directed by Kenny Ortega.

@moviefreak97 That's not what I said. Reread buddy. It's a classic like Coyote Ugly or Showgirls, terrible films but were major movies at the time being.

Right at the top of the really, really bad ideas list and they should be ashamed of themselves for thinking of it. This is guaranteed to be straight to video where it will die a death of the totally unwanted and ignored.

I think remaking this movie would be as horrible an attempt as remaking footloose. Leave this oldie alone and try to make a new movie all on your own. If it is going to made the only person who even fits the part would be Lea Michelle. None of those guys have the bad boy attitude persona to take on Johnny. I say that if they are going to remake it then make Johnny Channing Tatum. He has made several dance movies and carries the attitude for the part.... Again I beg, please don't do it.

I think that this should be an updated version and not a remake. I could see Hough playing a ballroom dance instructor who moonlights in the dance clubs. But not with Lea Michele. We need someone who can actually dance. Also, a small cameo from Jennifer Grey would be great. Give her a dance number with Hough. We already know she'll be able to do it from her time on Dancing With The Stars.

@moviefreak97 It's really not that the original wasn't that great. It's because Dirty Dancing is a classic and, to my sister for example, one of the most iconic films ever. This is just a mockery.

Why did I give this a thumbs up? For several reasons.

1.) Kenny Ortega is the PERFECT director for the job.
2.) The original isn't all that great to begin with so I'm not complaining that it's being remade
3.) Lea Michele is EXACTLY who I would choose to take over. That girl is an exceptionally talented actress/singer/dancer.

However, I'm not too happy over any of the choices to take over Patrick Swayze. Morrison's too old and his previous relationship with Michele on Glee would make the entire thing come off as creepy and the rest aren't too great actors. I personally feel they should get Zac Efron.

Remakes Remakes Remakes! F*cking Hollywood! And the only ones who will watch this garbage is the Teeny Bopper Crowd that Hollywood is catering too with all these remakes!

Back in the day, it was easier to do movies like this because there were actors in hollywood who were dancers and actor's. Nowadays, it's either you have a dancer who cannot act for his life or an actor who does like none of his own dancing in the film because he is not a trained dancer.

Whatever. If Hough tries the line "Nobody puts Baby into a corner," I may piss myself laughing. Swayze had the credibility as a tough ass that could dance; Hough is a dancer that probably can't fight his way out of a paper bag.
