Deadpool Writers Talk About Working with Ryan Reynolds

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick reveal their progress on the spin-off film
Along with the upcoming sequel Zombieland 2, screenwriters Rhett Reese are also working on a new superhero spin-off film as well. MTV Splash Page recently spoke with Reese and Wernick, who described their status on the Deadpool film.

"We're outlining it pretty seriously right now," explained Rhett Reese. "We're in the early stages."

"We just absolutely adore the character and the comic," explained Wernick. "And tonally, it's right up our alley. He's the unstable, smart-ass, self deprecating guy - and they say write what you know, so [we're perfect for it]."

Reese and Wernick also revealed how closely they have been working with the man who is playing Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds, and that they are "developing it on a near-daily basis with Ryan Reynolds, who is just awesome," according to Wernick.

"What's great about Ryan is that he's been the keeper of the Deadpool flame for many years, he's loved the character since forever; he lives it and breathes it," Reese said of some of the specific ideas Reynolds has brought up to them. "We're a little newer to Deadpool, although we've done a bit of catching up. One of the nice things about working with Ryan is that he tonally gets it - if we ever do something that is off the Deadpool path, or if it doesn't feel like Deadpool, he catches it."

Ryan Reynolds should have had far more to do with Deadpool's portion in Origins. Every role he is in has the same cheeky wit that Deadpool is famous for. This is one of very few recent films that should actually show a 'reboot' in the character though - that finale in Wolverine was pretty obscene.

First off, Reynolds was Great as Deadpool in Wolverine! He looks the part & his snarky real life/character roles fit the part to a 'T." ParkWilliams- yes, Deadpool was used as more of a storyline's 3rd act plot device (which was quite good in Wolverine) but, they gave him what they could, the finale no less, in an origin movie with many other characters to juggle.

As far as the descrepancy regarding Ryan Reynold's years in the making devotion to his Deadpool character, I've always read that he was the sincere comic fanboy & champion of getting Deadpool onto the silverscreen. With the ZombieLand screenwriters working closely with Reynolds, I've only have more faith and anticipation that this Deadpool spinoff movie is going to be an awesome comic movie!!

sounds good two things wrong with this. Ryan said it himself he didn't know about the character until he got the role and did alot of research to portray the character right, so for them to say he has known about it for years is a under statement and whoever quoted him needs to get spell check cause last i knew totally is spelled totally not tonally.

Reynolds is a great pick for Deadpool, and he did great in the opening of Wolverine. The only problem was the way they hacked his character up for a cheap final fight to wrap up the movie. Even with the 'secret scene' at the end showing Deadpool's body groping for his head isn't enough to redeem the character. They should only go through with this if they intend to move back to the very beginning of the character and really explore his roots rather than just jumping in on the smart ass, sword swinging smack talker we are so jarringly introduced to in Wolverine. We need to see how he becomes the character first, which is where this film should take us.

"What's great about Ryan is that he's been the keeper of the Deadpool flame for many years, he's loved the character since forever; he lives it and breathes it," WHAT A BUNCH OF BULLSH*T!!!

in an old interview Ryan said he was not a fan, but like what he knew about the character!

The whole project sounds very slip-shot, quite dodgy! Especially with the introduction of the character in WOLVERINE, i don't have much hope. The writing team sounds good, but let's see.

I'm still pissed that Ryan is playing both Wilson & Jordan! DEADPOOL or FLASH would have been perfect for him.

But since he is they need to differentiate the character/actor as much as possible. The simplest way is to keep Deadpool's face covered.

They should learn from V FOR VENDETTA, there's NOTHING wrong with covering the face of a character throughout a film, IF if adds to the story!
Problem is most actors won't let their egos to be crushed by letting their 'money-maker' to be covered!

Ryan is perfect for this role. I have said it from day one, that he was the closest thing to what Deadpool is in the flesh. Now even though the Wolverine Origins films was not what ther comic wrote for him, it was entertianing. But even if they choice to ignore what was done for the creation of Deadpool in it, they did show what Ryan will be like in full on Deadpool film. I just hope that they do create Deadpool more on the comics line, then the film, couse of my person feelings that he is more a complete rogue type hero. He was more like what Wolverine is to a point.

@ Raoul Duke: According to Laura Schuler Donner, Deadpool will completely ignore X-Men Origins: Wolverine and will definitely focus on his beloved attributes -which is to include breaking the fourth wall. It will confuse average movie goers who have been paying attention to the X-Men franchise.

I never saw Zombieland, but I do. Based on reviews, it sounds like Reese and Wernick did a pretty good job. I will definitely see this film because Reynolds was perfect from the get-go and Deadpool is an amazing character.

RZA should do the music, similar to what he did for Blade:Trinity.
