David O. Russell talks Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
David spoke with The Los Angeles Times. This is what he had to say about the script, which is about halfway finished:
"It's a locomotive. This idea really turns me on that there's a family that's a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities ... [a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice. We'll have the family dynamic, which we've done in a couple of movies now. And then you take that and put it on the bigger, more muscular stage of an international action picture, but also put all the character stuff in it. That's a really cool idea to me."
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune does not have a tentative start date at this point in time.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci. The film is directed by David O. Russell.

I'm pretty sure that MovieWeb is confusing this quote, because Russell not talking about his plot for Uncharted here, he's talking about what he likes about National Treasure, and how he wants to sort of model his Uncharted movie after that.

My two Uncharted games must have been incomplete b/c I don't remember a f-ing family. There's Sully, the girl reporter, Drake and whole bunch of bad guys and I don't recall any of those being related. What the heck is he talking about? I have to agree w/ bud2fresh. Russell's version sounds exactly like National Treasure.

Just not happy about Marky Mark and the rest of the funky bunch in this movie! His idea sounds like National Treasure all over AGAIN!

Here's a better idea. For once, ONCE, use the story of the video game, expand on THAT, keep the same characters, and don't f*cking change story!

Wow, I'm already turned off by it. This sounds NOTHING like Uncharted.

Russell's a great filmmaker, and Wahlberg's a great actor, and they've worked together before. I have a feeling this is going to be one of the better video game adaptations.

Here's what Kotaku had to say about it:

This movie better not suck, it's sad to see some comic book and novel adaptations succeed, but video game adaptations fail miserably, please get this right I beg you.

It could be a good film, but I think its better off as miniseries on HBO

Hmmm, a new approach to an interesting video game. I'll judge when more information comes out on this, but for now it is intriguing...

@Davereactor Dude i know the screenplay isn't out yet but from what the director is saying how the movie is going to be, i know its going to be a sh*tty screenplay just like all the other horrible game to movie screenplays... Also making this a family film really? this is not what Uncharted is all about! its about Adventure and kick ass and i mean a lot of that... There is no place for family there... Unless they want to ruin it, and its a shame since Uncharted is such a great game.... But its your typical Hollywood reaction. This movie is a big pass for me.

@inc ummmm although this is a video game adaptation-Different story and different director so i dont see why you are judging this solely because of Mark Wahlberg

I dont mind Mark, but the most important thing to me is it keeps true to the game stories. There is no "familey" of Drakes in the games. Nathan is a lone Drake who has friends and enemies. For me, I dont mind it not being story for story on the first of second games. BUT, I dont want some out of left field writing done on the characters and their relationships and such. I would love to see a movie with the idea and concept of the first game, but lets just be faithful to the game and characters as the main focous in the script please...

This is going to suck big time... Bad director, Bad lead actor for Drake, and also bad writing and plot.... Your typical Hollywood game to movie sh*t... I curse you Hollywood, i really do...

As long as the movie has the fresh energy and action, plus the mythology to it that is like a modern Indiana Jones that the video games have, it should be a lot of fun.
