The Wolverine is the official title for the sequel
Hitfix spoke with director Darren Aronofsky who confirmed the official title for his X-Men Origins: Wolverine sequel to be just The Wolverine--no number.

Darren Aronofsky referred to the movie as a "one-off," and emphasized that the film isn't a traditional sequel.

Logan beginning a forbidden romance with a Japanese woman whose hand in marriage is, unfortunately, promised to another man. Since Logan won't take no for an answer, it puts him into battle with her father and her samurai-sword-wielding brothers.

The Wolverine comes to theaters July 26th, 2013 and stars Hugh Jackman. The film is directed by James Mangold.

"there better be other mutants in it too. it just sounds like wolverine will just be fighting a bunch of ninjas and samuari's"

What, more mutants like Origins? No thanks. If it features a couple other mutants that are actually important to the story, then go ahead. But pretty much all of the mutants in Origins were treated poorly or didn't need to be in the film. I'm perfectly content with a Wolverine focusing on Wolverine.

I would like to see Nightcrawler again. Him and Wolverine were close friends in the comics. However, I don't know if he'd work into the Japan storyline, or if he'd work into the continuity of the other X-Men films.

@TheNarrator I had forgotten about that its been soooo long since i read it. I loved the Chris Claremont run on X-men, i think it is still my favorite era in the fanchise. At the time Claremont was writing quite a few books and mini series. as much as an x men fan as i am i feel a little foolish for having forgotten one of the best claremont pieces ever.

@CBF, you mean that they will be using the source material for to base this film on? What a novel concept. It's too bad Singer has decided to shun that same material for the so-called "First Class."

Give me a break :P This doesn't work for the sequel of a spinoff. The original should have been: "The Wolverine"

    @Mrp
Well not really because alot of people when thinking Hugh Jackman think Wolverine and well vice-versa. Darren wants this to be a Stand-alone Wolverine story, its still Wolverine, its just not in relation to the X-men Story or Origins story.

But i do grasp your point :)

Standalone usually means ' So anyone can go and see it and not have seen the other films' That means loads of waffling sh*t and exposition at the start for anyone who hasn't read a comic or watched the others.

The premise is straight from the Japan story in the comics. Itsu, Silver Samurai, and Daken - although we can only hope they leave Daken out of the story (Wolverine's son). You can't really complain that they are taking a classic Wolverine story straight from the comic book, which Jackman has wanted to do himself for a long time, and adapting it. It's more true to the source material than the first film or any of the X-Men films. Finally doing Wolverine justice.

Ooooo and by what he means is that, This won't be related to Origins, its a one-off standalone film, so its not a sequel to Origins......Hence why there is no X-MEN or Origins significance in the title, just 'THE WOLVERINE' starring HUGH JACKMAN which is a smart title

@Diaigma Agreed...... But heck I WANT MACHINE-BOY.....He sounded more passionate about that project than he did WOLVERINE, but its Aronofsky, i'll see it regardless :)

"Everybody hates X men 3 and Wolverine orgins but i ask you why? You haft to watch these movies like you were picking up new comic with a diff perspective on a traditional story. I would rather have 10 bad Wolverine movies than not getting to see him at all on screen .... just sayin"

    Wow.

First off, if you're spelling "have to" as "haft to" then you're probably not old enough to be commenting here. Second, the "different pesrpective on a traditional story" is fine if it doesn't suck. X3 and Wolverine sucked. Third, your last sentence is what's wrong with Hollywood. I'd rather see them get it right once then get it wrong a dozen times.

@phillip-wilcox: The Japan storyline is an essential part of Wolverine's background, from what I know. Jason in space was an essential part of running out of ideas.

I like the title. It would have worked for the TDK sequel as well..."The Batman."

"the film isn't a traditional sequel" If that means that they're ignoring the sh*t fest that was the first movie as much as possible and just focusing on making a good movie, then count me in. I hope Aronofsky can bring out the berserker rage in Logan.

i hope this will be sick. i read an x-men novel where wolverine was like a James Bond/Jason Bourne kind of assassin. i hope that's the direction they take if old Logan's goin to Japan. it'll probably be another ending where the beezy dies and he holds her in his arms screaming like he does in eight other movies. please don't do that anymore hugh Jackman. we get it, you love p*ssy

  30. The Narrator: The Better Man

@Skywise, there was the graphic novel "Wolverine" written by Chris Claremont, along with Frank Miller. It basically shows the entire Japan/Mariko story arc, and is the perspective the film will be based off of. Just in case you haven't read it, and have only read of the event in the Uncanny X-Men run.
