Daniel Craig Turns Down Thor

As Marvel Studios begins to slowly leak information about Thor, we now know at least one person who won't be in the film - Daniel Craig. Craig, while speaking to IESB about the latest James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, said that he had turned down the role of Marvel's Thunder God in the upcoming film.

When asked about being on the short list for the film, Craig confirmed that Marvel had approached him about the role, but he had turned on. He jokingly added it would have been too much of a power trip being both James Bond and Thor, running around with long hair and a hammer.

While Craig was probably joking about the power trip aspect of it, there probably would have been real scheduling conflicts with being both Bond and Thor. In addition to starring in his own film in 2010, whatever actor plays Thor will most likely be contractually obligated to appear in The Avengers in 2011, not to mention possibly making cameo appearances in The First Avenger: Captain America and Iron Man 2. That would make it difficult to have Craig do another Bond film any sooner than 2012, which the producers of the Bond series might object to.

So, while Kenneth Branagh is most likely confirmed to direct Thor, the search for the wielder of Mjolnir, Thor's mystic hammer, continues!

Thor was released May 6th, 2011 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan SkarsgÄrd, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Idris Elba. The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Disappointing news, as I think he would have made a great Thor, but I can understand his reasons. Being Bond's his dream.

V2K said he hasn't seen many bond films. But I can't believe he turns this down. I've never heard of Thor, but still, "it'd be too much of a power trip." WTF? That's another franchise someone turns down in the past week or so. The last being Terrance Howard for Iron Man 2.

Oh well, at least Craig will probably be in more 007 films now.

thats exactly what he thought chad.. and I would agree completely.. I would lose some respect for his "badass" nature in the bond films.. and vamp, you must not like bond movies then..

I wonder if he thought it'd ruin his James Bond reputation or something. Cause like he joked about, it would be weird to have two huge names stapled to yours. James Bond is a popular name, being Thor would just turn him into some stuck up actor and it'd all go to his head.

It's a bit of a shame. I love him as Bond, and so long as they gave him a beard I could have definitely seen him as Thor...actually, thinking about it, it's a damn shame. What gives Craig?

I'm soooooo glad that he turned it down. I'm not to fond of him as James Bond, I can't imagine how much I'd despise him as Thor.

Brad Pitt as Thor would be just a rehash of Achilles in Troy. I want an actor not associated with greek myths to play Thor (I know Thor is Norse, not Greek).

  22. Err

    i agree.

besides i always thought of thor as a sort of symbol of gay pride. with his long flowing locks and tight short-shorts and tight shirt, everytime i looked at him i thought he just screamed "fabulous" so if daniel craig played him i would have a hard time taking craig seriously adter that.

    that's right , i said it.
    thor is a peter puffer.
