Dan Aykroyd Dishes More on Ghostbusters 3

The Guardian sat down with Dan Aykroyd, who dished more on Ghostbusters 3, currently being developed at Columbia Pictures. Here's what he had to say:

"A period piece, it takes place two years after the events of the second movie and sees Manhattan once again under threat. It's closer in scale to Aykroyd's original vision but in canon terms, it's the next chapter of the story.

And now for the supernatural bit: after coming together for the game, all the players have stated their intentions to go back, and a script is being written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, writers on the US Office.

According to reports the original cast will act as mentors, handing the company over to a new generation, likely to be from the Seth Rogen and Steve Carell class of actors who are filling up just the same space in Hollywood as Aykroyd and Murray once did. "There'll be a whole new generation that has to be trained and a leader that you'll all love when you meet her," says Aykroyd. "There'll be lots of cadets, boys and girls who'll be learning how to use the neuron splitter and the inter-planet interceptor - new tools to enable them to slip from dimension to dimension."

Ghostbusters 3 comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Sigourney Weaver, Anna Faris, Bill Murray, Eliza Dushku, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson. The film is directed by Ivan Reitman.

I have to say with out Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and the other two guys, Ghostbusters would suck because these guys are great actors. And I still wish for the next generation of Ghostbusters I wish they would get Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, and Will Smith. Because with the first generation Ghostbusters and the next Generation Ghostbusters working together now that movie would rock.

The thing that I don't get is if the story is this kinda "out there" with almost too much things and I remember Bill Murray saying he hated the 2nd Ghostbuster movie cause it was more special effects and less story (even though it's no different than the first film). Now if that's the case, why would he sign on for this one since it will clearly be over the top from the sounds of it. Maybe it has a good story that we don't know about yet. I'm sure those actors have the heads up/insider scoop lol. If Bill Murray says okay then something must be rad in it.

Yeah, I'm a little worried after reading this...like CBjunior.

The good news: "a new generation, likely to be from the Seth Rogen and Steve Carell class of actors."

The questionable to bad news: "There'll be lots of cadets, boys and girls who'll be learning how to use the neuron splitter and the inter-planet interceptor - new tools to enable them to slip from dimension to dimension."

O.K. so despite what I said in a previous post, maybe they CAN f*ck this up after all. The whole idea of the original team acting as mentors to a new generation...spot-on. Casting...headed in the right direction. But the concept of 'cadets' at a school could easily turn into something like "Sky High" or even those awful "Spy Kids" movies!

This shouldn't take place two years after the second movie. The actors are much older, regardless of CG or makeup to make them look younger which would skyrocket the budget of the film.

Why do we need to go 'dimension to dimension'? Keep things grounded to a certain extent, like the original! If Aykroyd wants to go crazy like this, let him do another animated series where it doesn't matter if things are incredibly unbelievable and implausible!

I'm starting to smell 'overly tricked out' again. I hate that smell.

Write a great story, have great comedic actors playing members of the new team, keep the original members in the background (almost like extended cameos), THEN bring in the ghosts and visual effects. We should be focused on the humor of the characters, certainly heading in a new direction, and NOT on how much over the top CG and ridiculously unbelievable action we can squeeze into the story.

Still want to stay positive...this could still be really good if handled well.

Fallen, actually it was rumored like maybe a year after the release of Men In Black that Will Smith was to be in the next Ghostbuster film, which was obviously a rumor lol. I read it in a game magazine no less. Man that was a long time ago lol.

slynide, I think he was talking about the anticipated Ghostbusters video game coming out next month, which has all the original ghostbuster voices, janine, and the game's story was written by Akyrod and Ramis (like the movies). As well as a Blu Ray version of the original film to celebrate it's 25th year anniversary I do believe.

This has plenty of potential, but I don't think it will turn out that great. I am a Ghostbusters fan so it kind of worries me, like how I am a massive Terminator fan and then seeing Salvation. We will have to see over time how this is shaping up.
