Could The Incredible Hulk Be the Villain for The Avengers?
"I hope The Avengers embraces that," Fergus said of having the Hulk appear as the film's antagonist. "You don't want like 10 super-badass good guys fighting together. Where's the fun in that? Let's break it off a little. Friends or colleagues who become enemies is always an interesting thing because you know it's based on love and friendship and that's always the worst thing to have turn bad - is someone you actually care about and someone you actually believe in."
In the comics The Hulk has battled nearly every superhero in the Marvel universe, often as a result of a misunderstanding of some sort. Furthermore, because he has already appeared in his own film, The Avengers wouldn't need to waste time establishing his origin. And the closing shot of The Incredible Hulk deliberately set things up so that the Hulk could be used as a threat in a future film.
"I left the door open for whoever's going to direct The Avengers with our last shot. Edward [Norton] and I, we consciously decided to make the last shot of the movie when he opens his eyes and he smirks at the camera," Leterrier told us. "Is he enjoying it? Is he malicious? That's what's great about Edward. You don't know if he's a good guy or bad guy. He's always on this edge and we've been sort of surfing that edge, that very thin edge during the entire movie."
Furthermore, the scene where Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark appears to General Ross near the end of The Incredible Hulk even suggests that the reason the Avengers are being put together might be to contain the Hulk.
For his part, Fergus entirely approves of this approach. "I personally like when good-guy characters have to fight each other," he said. "Good guys going against good guys who both believe in an issue is way more interesting than a villain clearly into evil and I like when former friends become committed enemies."
We'll see how the groundwork is laid through the releases of Thor, Iron Man 2 and The First Avenger: Captain America - and then watch how it all comes together when The Avengers hits theatres in 2011.
Thor was released May 6th, 2011 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Idris Elba. The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Captain America: The First Avenger was released July 22nd, 2011 and stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci. The film is directed by Joe Johnston.
Marvel's The Avengers was released May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.
Iron Man 2 was released May 7th, 2010 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Jon Favreau.

Wat is the need to mess with something that works!!!! Eric Banas Attempt at hulk was horrible, disgusting and insult to the senses of sight and sound!!! They finally do good when they got Ed Norton a well rounded actor with a far more acting stature. He nails the part and they make a good decent Hulk movie. And now the addition of the Avengers for another movie is awesome, but the hole "The Hulk is bad Guy kill him" misunderstanding storyline that shadows the hulk has to stop!!! Let him be recognised as a hero so we can move on and enjoy him in another storyline. Maybe the Villain that they face is so powerfull that Hulk with the help of the Avengers can be the only hope of saviour. Just a thought.

@LankStun Because the phrase IS "Like a nigg*r on crack."
I don't think JR's being racist. The Word "Nigga" isn't real. It's made up to make people who call each other that feel better about using the word in the first place.

I don't read any marvel comics, I just enjoy the movies, so what would I know, but the directors should have the movie stay true to the comics, instead of some random made up plot, that have nothing to do with the comics. Punisher War Zone is the one and only Marvel movie right now that stays true to the comics.
All the directors that have directed any Marvel movie, and the creators of the Mavel characters should get together and work on the movie, just a thought.
Also, how does the Punisher fit into all this.

they did something like this recently in the comics with the world war hulk saga when hulk returns to earth after been banished after the marvel civil war, this should be awesome if the film is like that

Loki f*cks with the Hulk, distracting the avengers while the allied (or unwitting, Loki could just use him as a tool) Ultron progresses his plot to kill his "father" Hank Pym using The Vision in this plot. Hank Pym get's control of the Vision (Not too far-fetched, the Vision is Ultron's design, and Ultron was Pym's) and Vision helps to defeat Ultron and subdue the Hulk, while Thor, Iron Man and wasp bust sh*t up on Loki, sending him to celestial Asgardian Prison... or f*ck it, just killing him.
Cap fits in there in various places, overseeing the whole thing and proving himself as The leader of The Avengers.
You could fit this into one movie if you do enough backstory for Loki
(and Maybe even Ultron) in the Thor movie, give Ant-Man some Minor presence in Iron Man 2 (or 3, but I don't know if they're just doing Avengers after Iron Man 2 or trying to squeeze in another sequel or what) And give Captain America a good ending.
The big key here is collaboration between Directors and Writers so that all of these films, Iron Man: The Ten Rings, Thor, and Captain America: TFA do as much as they can to work toward a common end--
The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
Ready or not, here it comes.

Hulk as a "villain" or even as a misunderstood hero has been done too many times. I want to see Banner in control of the Hulk, completely revelling in it, occasionally just going apesh*t and risking losing control until the Avengers have to fight both him and Ultron/Vision
(think it would be good to use the end of the Thor movie as a a partial lead-in to the Avengers because the Avengers originally "Assembled" because of Loki, and with a Thor movie coming out, it just seems too perfect to pass up)
But then how do you transition from Loki to Ultron? I really want to see Ultron and the Vision in this series.

lol... if they do this right this movie will turn out to be the sh*t, all they have to do is have the hulk f*ck all these niggas up and then have him be on the good team like its suppose to be and then we would all get a real villian, i wonder who that would be?

Is the hulk really competent enough to be good or bad? I think of the hulk like that deformed guy from the goonies, sloth I think? Just really confused and angry, and yearning for betty and a baby ruth. Hey you guys! I'll Smash You! I think they should head in that direction. Captain America can be like Sean astin, and Ant man can be chunk

it will be the avengers trying to control the hulk causeing a battle between them while the real villian in the back ground waits till they beat each other to a pulp so he has noone to deal with and he can take what he wants.....until the avengers convince the hulk to fight along with them against the real villian...

This is certainly an interesting idea, but let's see just how far they'll go with this. I like mark Fergus' comment, about good guy against good guy. I wouldn't be quite so keen if the Hulk was an out and out villain with evil intent, as he's always been seen as the (misunderstood) hero.

I just don't get it ! the hulk a bad guy ???
if he is going to be up against the avengers it would make the avengers the bad guys in my eyes ! the hulk only turns bad if something bad happens to him !!! anyway, all of this is irrelevant because Batman is THE ONE ! he will take them all outside onto the chippins and give em all a good hiding and be back home to his apartment in time for tea and cookies ;)

I don't know why nobody has mentioned The Leader as the "real" main villain in 'The Avengers'.
The Leader was introduced at the end of 'The Incredible Hulk'. So if the big green fella hasn't had a sequel made before they make 'The Avengers', or unless Iron Man, Thor or Cap America have slapped him about in their solo films The Leader is the obvious choice for the villain.
