Could Neill Blomkamp Be Directing The Hobbit?

Neill Blomkamp directing The Hobbit?
Neill Blomkamp directing The Hobbit?
In a story from TheOneRing.net, it seems that Neill Blomkamp (District 9) is on a shortlist of possible directors for The Hobbit. However, at present this story is only a rumor.

It looks like a bunch of TheOneRing.net's tipsters have put many bits and pieces together, and this has led to the conclusion that the sought after director could be the man to land this job.

Apparently, if this were to happen it could be a situation where Lord of the Rings Director Peter Jackson would mentor Blomkamp through this project. Jackson did produce District 9 and things worked out really well for that colloboration, right? TheOneRing.net cites everything from possible casting situations to how much Jackson and Blomkamp seem to like each other (when seen in person), as to why Blomkamp could get this gig. The final thought is that with the Comic-Con International in San Diego approaching perhaps something will be announced there.

As stated above, this story is just a rumor that is based on a great deal of speculation. We will continue to report on this story as it unfolds.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

That was his only feature length film. You can't say "he mostly has a thing for..." when he's only directed one movie. Just because he hasn't done fantasy adventure, doesn't mean he can't.

Oh, and by the way, there wasn't anything pointless about the beginning of D9. It set up the story.

I don't know if Blomkamp should direct this. He mostly has a thing with making news programs like at the pointless beginning of "District 9."

Blomkamp could do it for sure, but Jackson needs to be the one. If he's got other projects first that's fine. The Hobbit needs to be done right so take your time.

If Blomkamp directs, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and say I'd go for it. District 9 is one of the best sci fi's I've seen in a while, and I could see him handling this. Some of you are saying he's too young for it. I feel this would be a good chance for him to really make a name for himself. It's risky, but I'd support it.

  5. The Narrator: The Better Man

People don't understand the word: Contract. HE can't do it legally without pushing a few of his previous engagements over. So Jackson is out unless he has grace from the other studios.

Jackson, JUST DO IT!!!! I'm so sick of all this Guillermo Del Toro crap, then all the MGM bs, then all of this director speculation bullony. Why not just do it yourself, when you know there are MILLIONS of fans out there who want you to do it yourself!!!

This is most likely just a rumor. As much as I love Blomkamp, I don't want the Hobbit to take time away from his next film or a District 10 film. However, I think he could surprise a lot of people and do a great job. And out of all the rumors floating around, this one does have the most plausibility to it, given Blomkamp and Jackson's track record together.

  8. I AM FRATSON

Ya, Jacksons trilogy is perfect. However the Hobbit stands apart from the trilogy IMO. Ya they are all related but it is its on being. I like Blomkamp but he is young. IDK if he is ready for this. Then again if he gets the gig, im sure PJ has faith in him. Granted, even though this might make Narzion a bit upset, I would like to see jackson back in the directors chair.

I think he could do it. The only question is whether he'd want to.

  10. Messenger

How can anyone say that Niel can't do fantasy? My god, if you had brain in your head you would realize that makes no since because if you think a person might be good and one genre and not another just look at Jackson's early work compared to LOTR.

Definitely not experienced to take on a big epic fantasy.... this news is just so fake.!!!!

PJ has the say in what director will take on the Hobbit. For me it should be boiled down to 2 people by now and it could be either Robert Zemeckis or Neil, so make up your mind Peter.
We all know how perfect you want it.

  13. Narzion

peter jackson doesn't want to direct the hobbit, because he would have to compete against his perfect trilogy and he doesn't want to, so stop talking about jackson when it is obvious that he is not interested
blomkamp is the only director jackson can trust now and his take on the hobbit would be original and i believe great

Peter you created the world of Middle earth, you should end it. I don't care if you are going to make the Hobbit in 2020 just as long as you make it !

  15. Narzion

he is 1000000 better than yates and he is great young director
his style is more sci-fi than fantasy but at the end i would like to see blomkamp directing hobbit

  16. K-Man

He made a successful *Doc*mentary* style Sci-fi film that was good but not great by any means. He hasn't proven himself worthy for The Hobbit films yet, in my opinion. The guy clearly has got talent, but how is one to know if he can even make a semi-decent "non-doc*mentary" style film, considering he's never even attempted one before??? Not to mention we dont know how well he can establish characters and storylines with a lot of depth (face it, District 9 was pretty shallow in terms of overall depth to anyone and anything in the film)
This is a pretty big step down from Guillermo Del Toro, if it ends up being true. Peter will always be my number one choice, but if he doesn't want to do it then he doesn't want to do it. In that case, I still say Robert Zemeckis is the best runner up for the Job and the most qualified! He's visual effects experienced, insanely good at conveying extremely complex storylines and characters to the big screen and his visual style, in terms of camera movement, framing of the shot and overall mood/tone is very similar to Peter's, which would add some form of continuity to the world of The Hobbit!

    Forget Blomkamp, bring on Zemeckis!

  19. The Narrator: The Better Man

He proved that he's talented, and great at creature design and such, but I don't think he should do this. Leave it to a type-cast director, one who knows fantasy/adventure, and let Blomkamp do his thing.
