Could Martian Manhunter Serve as a Replacement for Smallville?

Smallville is currently in the midst of it's eighth season, and fan reaction suggests that this season has been more successful than most in recent memory - however it has been suggested that a ninth season may not be in the cards due to Tom Welling's contract being up, and the actor may be growing tired of being Superboy. However, as spotted by , there was an interesting suggestion in the latest print edition of about what might happen in place of the show.

The article says that "[Showrunner Darren] Swimmer suggests a Smallville spinoff starring Phil Morris (John Jones aka Martian Manhunter), who next appears Jan. 22."

Morris' character, the Martian Manhunter, has long been a key member of DC Comics' Justice League of America, and the similarities between his character and Superman are many. Both are super-strong, invulnerable, able to fly, and are the last surviving members of an alien race. The Manhunter has many other abilities, however, including shape-shifting, density control, invisibility and telepathy. His regular appearance is also fairly inhuman.

It's interesting to see that Swimmer is considering a spin-off focused on the Manhunter, instead of a more ensemble-based piece around the Justice League, or featuring either Laura Vandervoot's Supergirl or Justin Hartley's Green Arrow.

This statement also comes on the heels of the pitch for The Graysons, which would have focused on the pre-Batman days of Dick Grayson/Robin. Although it originally seemed like plans for The Graysons were moving forward, Warner Brothers executives have since put a hold on that project.

Smallville airs Thursday nights on the CW. New episodes, starting with LEGION begin on January 15, 2009. The drama about the early days of Clark Kent stars Tom Welling, Erica Durance, Allison Mack, Aaron Ashmore, Justin Hartley, Cassidy Freeman and Sam Witwer.

I feel they should end Smallville after this season. I've been watching since the beginning and love the show. Thursday night is my favorite TV night, especially with Supernatural right after (smart move by The CW). But they need to end it while it's still good. Have him learn how to fly already. Can't wait for the big fight between him and Doomsday. Hope they don't mess that scene up. As for a spin-off, my vote is for Green Arrow.

I love MM. If this happens, I would probably watch a few episodes, see how it goes.

But yeah, Green Arrow has more chance for success as an independent property.

Darren Swimmer made an off hand remark in TVG saying that if they don't get a 9th season pick up for Smallville- then a Martian Manhunter variety hour could be in the works- THIS WAS A JOKE! No Martian Manhunter show is under development

Methinks Green Arrow would have better chances...Clearly the Smallville audience digg this character and he'd still manage to appeal to the others: I mean clearly..just look at all the hype for everything that's vigilantes stories these days. Oliver Queen would simply kick ass. He's got this vulnerable side to him , limits which make him more easy to relate to, he's a womanizer, and got all those cool techs not to mention the bow collection AND theyd's still manage to add cameos from the other DC guys which would definitely add a cool factor to the show...they wanna pick green? PICK THE HUMAN ONE!

I'd watch it. It would be Smallville without the teenage drama.

I love Smallville, i just wish theyd end after the season. End on a good note and dont ruin a good thing. I agree with Zynthos, i doubt MM could be the focus of a series, hes not "human" enough. pardon the pun

i think this is a great idea because they can still have all the greats like green arrow, flash, aquaman, black canary and superman from time to time. also they can have John Jones aka Martian Manhunter have all his powers when they start. i'm 100% for a spinoff starring Phil Morris as(John Jones aka Martian Manhunter)and if tom welling doesn't want to play clark kent/ superman anymore then end smallville.

I dont know about this, Smallville has alot of relationship stuff wheras I'm not sure if Martian Manhunter could do this too. Generally in the Justice League stuff he was never really an emotional person so I'd think it would fail to find an audience
