The scooper for the site says:
Word as of now is that George Clooney has shown a lot of interest in the role of the Lone Ranger, and the studio's been talking to him about it. Previously it was rumored that Nic Cage was up for the role, but that rumor died a long time ago. Clooney's name has come up quite a number of times since.
Now, this is still only in the rumor stage, but the possibility of Clooney taking on the part of the Lone Ranger certainly has potential. Although Clooney is often maligned for his role as Batman in Batman & Robin, it seems unfair to blame the actor for the problems with that film.
The Lone Ranger's origin story begins with a group of Texas Rangers chasing down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. The gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.
The Lone Ranger owned by Classic Media, began life as a 1930s radio show. Its popularity led to movie serials, TV shows, comic strips and comic books, toys, novels and more. The character was most often portrayed by Clayton Moore, who played the character in both films and a long-running television series.
The Lone Ranger comes to theaters May 31st, 2013 and stars Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Ruth Wilson, Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Dwight Yoakam, Tom Wilkinson. The film is directed by Gore Verbinski.

Nice Cage would ruin the character. I agree about Jackman, though I would have rather seen a younger take on the character.
I don't know why MW is saying Clooney is confirmed in the new Ranger thread...they don't even have a story confirming it. It's like they forgot or are just assuming lol

Not very interested in this movie, but if they're gonna do it... THEN DO IT F*CKING RIGHT. Clooney is too old for the Lone Ranger role. He's already 47 years old. The Lone Ranger was a young guy who survived a massive indian attack on his troop and becomes the Lone Ranger. Depp is 45...Pitt is 44... and Bale is 34... in reality they're ALL too old. But they're damn good actors. If they do this... go with Depp (since he's already signed) and Bale or Pitt. Not a guy pushing 50. Just my opinion nothing more. Really don't care for this movie.

Are the creators behind this movie just thinking about the actors that ladies will go ga-ga over? Take iamxvindicated down there. She has no idea who the f*ck the ranger is, but if george clooney is in it, LET'S HAVE A F*CKING PARTY!! This movie is going down the crapper faster than paris hilton goes down on strangers. When i heard the pirates writers were penning it, i was excited that the ranger might be getting a good tune-up. Now i'm being thrown rumors and gurantees that ladies men are portraying my dad's childhood heroes? Get with it hollyweird. I'm happy they want good and well-known actors to portray these people, but get good and well-known actors who are actually right for the roles. They should go with dynamite's new lone ranger comic, where tonto is bad ass and the ranger is young. James McAvoy could have been the ranger if they went with this. But, if they want someone like clooney who's old, then they should get christain bale. I hope they get a damn good director, cuz i'm not likin the direction this is goin thus far...let more bitching begin
Oh, and btw, if they plan to cgi the horses, i'm throwing my keyboard threw the screen. HI-YO, SILVER!

this doesn't really interest me at all.
a lone ranger movie might be fun to watch if you're holed up in bed with the flu, eating chicken noodle soup and letting your sinuses drain out into some tissues.

All of a sudden The Lone Ranger has come to life. I remember seeing parts of the Chris Reeves version as a kid and reading some of the books... not sure about this one and will wait to hear a storyline or see a trailer. Has potential.
