COMIC-CON 2008: Friday the 13th New Footage and Panel Details

Movie Picture
The new and improved horror icon Jason, and those who brought him to the screen have invaded San Diego today. The cast and filmmakers of Friday the 13th came to Comic-Con for a panel and they had plenty in store for us. They even had a little contest before the panel started where you could win an acutal prop machete used by the new Jason, Derek Mears, in the new film.

Producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller came on stage and introduced the teaser poster for us and then they showed us some brand new video footage that no one has seen before.

- Amanda Righetti and another kid go into Jason's old houseand when they discover a severed head, teh door closes and a machete comes up through the floor and the kid is dragged through the floor. After that we see a big rapid-fire montage of footage that is capped off brilliantly by showing the new, pro-active Jason, actually running down a victim and slashing him down.

While this footage was brief, it displays how much life they have injected into this series after such a long period of mediocre films. Jason isn't a robot, slowly walking after his victims and somehow catching up with them. He goes after these people with full force and I can't wait to see more of it.

After that footage they brought out actors Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti and the new Jason himself, Derek Mears. They opened it right up to questions from the fans. Here's a rundown of what was said.

- The first question right off the bat dealt with why they chose to go with Jason right away, instead of his mother Pamela Voorhes, the killer in the first Friday The 13th. Brad Fuller answered that, "at the end of the day, with today's audience, it would be difficult to make it believable that Pamela Voorhes trying to kill Jared Padalecki. We didn't really think that we could make that believable."

- When asked if he was going to live or die, Jared Padalecki said he honestly didn't know. He also added, "I was trying to push for the prequel, Thursday the 12th."

- Brad Fuller noted that in this new film we will get the origin of how and why Jason got that infamous goalie mask. "We thought it was a really important thing to show," Fuller added.

- Fuller also said that the film was designed as a stand-alone film but, "if the audience loves the film, we'll rack our brains and try to figure out a way to bring it back." Derek Mears also noted that he'd love to don the hockey mask for future installments.

- Jared Padalecki said this film brings, "a whole new level of scare. It feels very real. It's based in reality and it's not like the slow-walking guy is gonna find us. This guy (Derek Mears' new Jason) is the real deal."

- Fuller said that Platinum Dunes is working on a remake of The Birds, which brought about much applause, and also that they're working on a deal to remake A Nightmare on Elm Street, "but we haven't made the deal yet," Fuller said after another huge round of applause.

- Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti remarked on how physically demanding the film was, but Righetti mentioned that, "it was definitely worth it. These were great people to work with and I enjoyed the job." She also said that, "when you're in it, you don't feel it but when you wake up the next day you do."

- Derek Mears talked about how tough the cast since they didn't want to use stunt doubles. "I thouroughly manhandled them and beat the crap out of them every single day. I asked them if they'd want to get their doubles and they went, 'No no no. It looks better with me so we can get the full shot, so let's do it.'"

I was on the set of this movie at the very end of shooting in June and I have to tell you, I was psyched for this film then and, after seeing this awesome teaser trailer, and the first glimpse at the tenacious Jason, I'm even more psyched. That's all she wrote from Ballroom 20.

Friday the 13th will be coming to theaters on Friday the 13th of February 2009.

Friday the 13th was released February 13th, 2009 and stars Jared Padalecki, Danielle Panabaker, Amanda Righetti, Travis Van Winkle, Aaron Yoo, Derek Mears, Jonathan Sadowski, Julianna Guill. The film is directed by Marcus Nispel.

cant wait for this, i dont care if jason weres his granma's hat it will be awsome. the remakes dont bother me really, you either like or not, i admit his time line doesnt make sense and the amount of times he died is stupid but its just a slasher flick, who cares really.
it would be good if for once they did actually consider him still human and actually kill him in this, a reinvention is time to correct mistakes not remake them all over again.
    will be awesome though

It's not just jason. Nightmare on elm street, halloween...they all have sequels just for the hell of it. And how many movies was there after the third one? Still quite a bit. All i'm sayin is that a remake is still a jason movie. It's jason vorhees...just accept it and move on. There's loads of movies with jason in it, a remake isn't gonna upset any delicate balance u think it has

This is a response to "watchman's" July 30th post. I will quote your P.S. first. "P.S. A remake is no dif. than the ten crappy sequels that get released after that first horror classic." I found this quote very interesting. Considering that this iconic character, Jason Vorhees, was introduced in a sequel. I know what you're thinking, yes he was mentioned in the original. However, he was not the one doing the killings. It was his mother. Furthermore, Jason did not reach his iconic state until part 3 when the mask was introduced. As we all know, icons become icons for what they are remembered for. Mention Jason Vorhees to anyboday & 99% of the time their first mental vision will be the mask. So, if what you are saying is that the original is the classic, then we should be paying awemage to Jason's mother, Pamela Vorhees, seeing as how she is the original killer of the Friday the 13th franchise.

Who gives a sh*t. This movie is a total cash grab. Reinvention of the series my ass. They have wrung this series dry. Jason was in Manhattan, he fought Freddy, they were so out of ideas, he was in f*cking space. Now their going to add some gruesome "Saw" like deaths and they expect us to come running?? Jesus even "Saw" has 4 sequels so it's about a fresh a Jason. If you pay $10 to see this regurgitated tripe you're a sucker.

To answer ur question comicbookfan, i'd like to quote myself from my rob zombie halloween remake:

"The truth is, the original is still there for us to enjoy; it's not like when this was released it just dissapeard from existence. "Remakes" don't destroy classics, in fact they do the complete opposite; they remind us why the originals were classics in the first place."

THAT'S why it doesn't matter if they're remade. WHO THE F*CK CARES?! Only stubborn jackasses feel the need to bitch about remakes when they can easily pop the original into their dvd player and enjoy all the glory. DON'T SEE THE REMAKE IF UR SO PISSED ABOUT IT. BUT, u people, even though u hate the idea, r still gonna see it, so stop bitching and think bout what i just typed...thank you

P.S. A remake is no dif. than the ten crappy sequels that get released after that first horror classic

Can somebody tell me why people think that classic, iconic movies need to be remade?

Freddy Kreuger, Jason Voorhees, Pinhead, Lawnmower Man, Chucky, etc... These are golden characters that have a strong, iconic image and cult followings. Today, they are untouchable. But now Hollywood thinks they CAN touch them, and will ATTEMPT TO REMAKE THEM!!??

I just seriously think this may ruin the character's rep. With a character like Jason, who has nine movies of history (as well as the mash-up w/ Freddy), ONE BAD MOVIE can break him. I have Friday the 13th I-IX and I seriously think a revamp is a bad idea. People watch these because they are old classics. They aren't thinking, "Jeez, someone needs to remake these movies, they're too old and cheesy." Movies are just not made like they were before.

Who agrees with me? Any thoughts?

I totally agree with you movie buff. As a teen i was totally enthralled by the classic films, of all horror, that subsequently are all being remade today, hell i did my 9th grade speech on horror films, but in the last 18 years i have seen how horror films have hit bottom. those that may argue that fact are saw fans, who see the saw films as great horror, but are simply put... gore fests. chainsaw, halloween, friday, and nightmare, as well as the original hellraiser, evil dead, even alien for that matter, the list goes on, were all truly terrifying for there time. films that had the gore factor, but truly tried to scare us with the things that go bump in the night.
but the resurgance of horror (thanks to scream) has gone in the vein of gore over scares, slime over shadow. even the original childs play changed to a more mainstream approach the later it got in its sequels with comedy. I think jeepers creepers, attempted the scare tactic and for what it is worth, succeeded to some degree, but overall horror films are not what they used to be, and to bring iconic characters back in a different form, with more gore is not much different than what is already on the market now. My point... i will wait patiently when they stop remaking these classics, and finally come up with something truly frightening (if they can, for most everything has been done) and original for todays audience. i sincerely think we are alot smarter than they give us credit for.

I saw the traile rfro the Remake of "Friday the 13th"...even with its poor sh*tty quality...it looked like some joke! With all the cheers from the crow I wonder how much Comic-Con paid them to cheer!??!

"Friday The 13th" was scary since you didn't know who the killer was!! Also "Friday The 13th" was never ever supposed to be a sequel! Paramount thought it could make more money and well the sh*t went out of control!

Who would have thought, with so many movies released on a shoe-string budget, with (mostly) no-name actors and directors, and repetitive plots, that the "Friday the 13th" series would have so many stories and so much history behind it? "Making Friday The 13th: The Legend Of Camp Blood" covers just about every bloody detail of the popular, but critically scorned horror series that started in 1980!!

HERE IS SOME BETTER FILM NEWS AND NOT SOME BS REMAKE!!

The Dark Knight" continues to obliterate box office records, crossing the $300 million mark in just 10 days.

The epic Batman saga grossed $75.6 million in its second weekend in theaters, pushing its domestic total to $314,245,000, Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman said Sunday.

That surpasses the record set in 2006 by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which took 16 days to make $300 million.

The latest Batman installment already had broken records for best opening weekend at $158.4 million and best single-day with $66.4 million. It's also busted records in its showings on IMAX screens, making $16.3 million in its first 10 days.

"The Dark Knight" could pass "Titanic" as the highest-grossing film in U.S. history, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. James Cameron's 1997 extravaganza made $600,788,188 domestically, a record no other movie has come close to touching.

"The 'Titanic' record has sat in a lock box for 10 years. It's a tall order but if any film has a chance to surpass that number, it's got to be 'Dark Knight,"' Dergarabedian said.

The old Friday the 13ths are not scary cause WE'VE SEEN THEM! You already know what's gonna happen. Hello? Show those movies to someone who has NEVER seen the original (like 2 freaking people in this world haha) and THEY WILL GET SCARED.

Now... I just saw the leaked trailer... and... wasn't scary. Reason being? All slasher films are the same sh*t. Just now... they're even more gory because of the better special effects.... but more gory isn't always better.

And that last scene shows Jason take three fast steps to get more leverage on his swing (ala Happy Gilmore)... it doesn't show him running. Although I'm sure he IS going to run in the movie. Still say its not a good idea.

I checked out the trailer and it looks way cool. As for all of the folks sayign Jason never runs, please re-watch parts 2-4. He runs and he is menacing, just like he seemd to be in this new one (remake). As for all of the bull regarding remakes, these older films can use the spruce up. The old FT13 films are no longer scary, mainly do to the now poor visual effects. Heck my wife can watch them and not be scared. This is a good thing period, FvsJ was a good film but it did not do justice to Jason (IMO).

Oh, and the "origin" of Jason's hockey mask? We all know he slashes up a kid and takes it from him. But stupid-ass Hollywood is gonna make something else up that will be incredibly LAME, just like Jason running around.

Moviebuff its not just gonna make him UNCOOL, its gonna make him STUPID, like I said. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I have ALL the Jason movies and am a HUGE fan of Jason, I watch them every Halloween. You are right, that is the mystique. A bitch can run and run and run, and Jason's far behind you. But she looks back for a second and all of a sudden the bitch smacks right into him. We are not supposed to know how Jason does that , that's just JASON. Next thing we know, they are going to say he lives in that smokestack shack and the "coming out of the water" thing was all stories or some sh*t... Hollywood ruins franchises. Period. Thanks for taking Jason away from us too, bastards.
