COMIC-CON 2006: The Cast and Crew of Saw III Speak!
Do we get to see more of the relationship between Amanda and Jigsaw?
Shawnee Smith: Yes, you do. You get to see that relationship grow into something special. How do you say it...Boom-Chick-A-Boom!
Tobin Bell: Yeah, we do get it on. It's all about the unspoken word.
Darren Lynn Bousman: Their relationship is very strong in this film. Their bond is the most important aspect of the story this time.
Will the film be aesthetically different:
Darren Lynn Bousman: Well, we brought back 85% of the cast and crew. But that doesn't mean it will look the same. This time out we took a different approach. It still looks gritty. And dirty. But the color scheme is different. There will still be that green hue that seems to appear anytime Jigsaw touches something. That's something James Wan created for the first film, and we carry it through here.
Does it get hard coming up with new elaborate death scenes?
Leigh Whannell: It does get hard. It's not about coming up with something new, and something sick. What we like to do is come up with traps and games that follow Jigsaw's logic. It's hard to think that line through sometimes.
Darren Lynn Bousman: the traps are a lot more elegant in this one. They are like their own set pieces.
How sickly can Jigsaw get? He was nearly dead by the end of the second film...
Darren Lynn Bousman: Who says he was really that sick? Maybe it was a trick. I guess you'll have to watch Saw III to have that question answered for you.
Is this mainly about pleasing the fans?
Leigh Whannell: Yes. That's what we are trying to do. And the traps are a pretty big part of that. They were such a small element of the first film, but people really grabbed onto that. It's funny that the fans took to such a small part of the film. With three we've really upped the ante.
Darren Lynn Bousman: The most important aspect was how the film would end. We didn't come up with the traps until the production process was finished. But, rest assured, this is a film for the fans.
Is this a trilogy, or will there be a part 4?
Darren Lynn Bousman: It's a trilogy with an eye towards 4. A puppy's eye on the end of a coat hanger.
How did Hostel raise the stakes for this sequel?
Leigh Whannell: Eli will call us in the middle of the night to tell us he has something more disgusting. We're always playing a game of one on one upsmanship. Saw III is going to blow Hostel away.
Tobin, how does it feel to get your own action figure?
Tobin Bell: There's an action figure?
Shawnee Smith: Does it get out of bed?
Can you give us one final word on the film?
Darren Lynn Bousman: Expect the unexpected.
Saw III comes to theaters October 28th.
