Columbia Picks Up Katherine Kurtz's Deryni Rising
The screenplay, written by Alex Sabeti, was picked up for a six-figure deal and will be produced by Jimmy Miller under "his Mosaic banner." Sabeti is also on board as an executive producer.
Deryni Rising "is a historical fantasy novel first published in 1970 that launched Kurtz's Deryni Kingdom series that, almost 40 years later, encompasses five trilogies, short stories and reference books."
The world "is set in a medieval kingdom of humans alongside the Deryni, a race of people with psychic and magical abilities. The first novel centers on a young prince who, after the death of his father the king, must defend his throne from a Deryni usurper."
After getting some money for his screenplay The Art of Cool, Sabeti took his loot "to option the entire Deryni book series. He adapted it on spec, which gave him a greater degree of control over how he told the book's story."
With Columbia on board the goal is to turn the property "into a tentpole franchise."

Hmmm...wonder if they'll consider Richard Roxburgh for the role of Morgan and Ian Hart for that of Duncan? They've worked together before (as Holmes and Watson respectively in an adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles), RR could doubtless carry of the wily warrior/courtier who consciously wields his dangerous charisma, and IH can also exhibit the brains to survive politically (see him as Cecil/Lord Burghley in The Virgin Queen for proof). Not that anyone is asking me; I merely comment FWIW.
