In a story from Variety, Paramount Pictures is currently talking with Chris Pine about playing CIA analyst Jack Ryan in a redux of the franchise that is based on the Tom Clancy novels.

This will be Pine's second Paramount franchise. He was James T. Kirk in Star Trek and he will play the role again in Star Trek 2.

Even though the talks have just started, Pine should be joining the Jack Ryan film as the project gets developed. Paramount and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are presently working with a script draft by Hossein Amini. The movie will be based on an original concept.

It is not known what will come first, Star Trek 2 or a new Jack Ryan film.

The character of Jack Ryan was created by Alec Baldwin in 1990's The Hunt for Red October. Then Harrison Ford played the CIA agent in 1992's Patriot Games and 1994's Clear and Present Danger. Lastly, Ben Affleck played Ryan in the 2002 film The Sum Of All Fears.

I loved the Net Force novels where Jack Ryan gets promoted and has his own division. Not that crappy TV mini-series though. The Clancy novels were excellent. Especially the first one: Net Force. Plus I loved "The Sum of All Fears" but Affleck was NOT Jack Ryan. He just did not portray RYan. I think Pine would do a lot better than Ford or Affleck.

Not sure. I like Pine, but this would have to be damn good not to be a career killer.
