According to The Hollywood Reporter, audiences in North America had a craving for something sweet at the boxoffice this weekend, and they satisfied that sweet tooth with Warner Bros. Pictures' Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The Johnny Depp starrer opened in the top spot with a sterling estimate of $55.4 million, while sister company New Line Cinema had Wedding Crashers arrive in second place with a stout debut of $32.2 million. Moreover, the strong showings from the two new films, combined with holdovers, boosted overall weekend revenue to top the comparable session last year. After the extended downturn of late, the up session keeps the momentum at the boxoffice moving in a positive direction. The debut of the PG-rated Charlie, which again pairs Depp with helmer Tim Burton, proved to be the fourth biggest of the year as well as a personal best for Depp, topping Buena Vista's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ($46.6 million); the second largest for Burton, after 20th Century Fox's Planet of the Apes ($68.5 million); a company best in July and the biggest of the year for Warners; and a record for an Imax DMR release.

Based on the classic 1964 novel by Roald Dahl, Charlie opened near the high end of expectations.
