Chadwick Boseman Is James Brown in First 'Get on Up' Photo

'The Help' director Tate Taylor makes his second feature with this musical biopic. Why did he go from 'women in pain' to 'The Godfather of Soul'?
The Help director Tate Taylor makes his second directorial feature with Get on Up, a biopic about the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. 42 star Chadwick Boseman, who embodied baseball great Jackie Robinson in that film, is back to tackle this iconic singer. We have the first photo of him on stage, in action, courtesy of EW.

Why did Tate Taylor decide to take on the project? After The Help, the burgeoning filmmaker was encumbered with script after script about 'women in pain'. But it was this spotlight on the pain of a misunderstood performer that resonated with him most.

"As I dug in and started to discover more about him, the good and the bad, I loved the reasons he was often bad and I loved the reasons he was good. I love that he would stop at nothing to keep reinventing himself so he could stay current, and as a result he changed music."

About his leading man Chadwick Boseman, he had no hesitation casting someone who just got done portraying another iconic African-American figurehead in pop culture.

"Jackie has left the building, we'll just say that. Oh my god, Chad's having so much fun."

The finish sound mix of the film will have Chadwick Boseman's own vocal tracks overlaid with James Brown for something that is unique, yet authentic when it opens later this year. Do we smell Oscar?

Get on Up was released August 1st, 2014 and stars Chadwick Boseman, Nelsan Ellis, Dan Aykroyd, Viola Davis, Lennie James, Fred Melamed, Craig Robinson, Jill Scott. The film is directed by Tate Taylor.
