"This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn," Singer said. "There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain."
"Whether it's 'Batman,' 'Lord of the Rings' or 'Star Trek,' if the characters are good, you want to see them on their journey even if you know their destiny," Singer said. "I put myself in the fan's position, and I think this story is something I would want to see, and so will they."

In the film, Xavier and Magneto will be twentysomething, and the film sounds similar in construct to the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek.
X-Men: First Class was released June 3rd, 2011 and stars James McAvoy, Laurence Belcher, Michael Fassbender, Bill Milner, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, Beth Goddard. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn.

I agree. Filmmakers need to keep the source material in mind when thinking about making comic book films. Whether or not they decide to take stories directly out of them or not is up to them. But keep what makes the characters and story rich in the comics. If it is told within a certain perspective, make the movie told within that certain perspective. If Venom is a bodybuilder, cast puny Eric Forman.... oh, wait.... sh*t....

I cant believe none of u have congratulated Singer on banishing that stupid-ass schwartz dude who wrote o.c. and gossip girl and the god awful Chuck from writing this flick... Mr. Schwartz was quoted as saying keeping the X-movies similar to the comics was not important... Thank u brian singer. U are back to being one of the better decision makers in hollywood. Now give me some young xmen dying by the hands of sinister or apocalypse and we're cool 4ever.

Me too. It is an overly nostalgic film, but as long as they reboot the franchise now, it has its place.

He's the only one that can salvage what's left of this cluster-f*ck and make a decent film. I would have liked Wolverine if it had been a smarter film, but it just didn't seem to care about plot or consistency, even in its characters.

The Fallen put it perfectly. What happened to the love for Singer? I am pumped he is back in this franchise! Can't wait to hear more!

The Narrator: The Better Man
I remember for a wile on movieweb last year we got so much X-Men sequel/spinoff/prequel rumors and on every thread we'd all be wanting Singer. No we have him and half the people on this forum don't want him...stupid.
He did make X-men (the fist ever superhero with more than one super-powered being...a whole bunch). And he made X2 which was really good. And he directed the Usual suspects which was a great story wise suspenseful movie. He can do this. Forgive him for Returns (which was not that bad just not what we expected) and lets get this show on the road.

It did so tie in with the previous films. It picked up from the end of Superman II and ignored the terrible terrible third and fourth films.

Superman Returns sucked couse, A, it was a movie that had no tie in, no seaming connection to the other movies, or shows. B, The story was stupid. He has a son with Lois, amd she dosnt know he is Superman? It should have been his chance to reboot Superman from a begining like Batman, or tie in from the show to atleast have some history to go on. It looked like he was trying to use the Reeves Superman movies as history, but nothing ever tied it togther...

I cant think of his name, but the guy who plays as Lex Luther on the tv show Smallville would do a great job as a young professor X.

What's with all the hate on Superman Returns? I thought Singer really nailed the character in that film.

Despite what happened to Superman Singer needs to come back to this franchise. Personally I like his films, but every so often a director does stumble.
I think what Bryan is trying to do is to ignore the third film and plan ahead. I don't blame him for Retners fault, since he was out of his league to begin with. Stick to what you know best.

This sounds interesting, but it sounds like a lot of what they had planned for Origins: Magneto. I recently heard that Magneto had been put on the back burner, so maybe this film is taking its place and exploring some of the same territory? I imagine they'll tie it in to the end of Wolverine and have young Cyclops and Emma Frost.

I have confidence in Singer, I'm just hesitant about the inclusion of "new mutants." The original five would have worked great. We'll see. I do like the idea of developing Xavier and Magneto's relationship.
I think James McAvoy would make a good young Magneto. Or maybe Sharlto Copley, but I don't know if he'd pass as a 20-some year old.

i have confidence that he will bring the franchise back from the grave... prequels are big, star wars did (although some would argue as far as how successfull that was in terms of filmaking and story telling), batman did it, star trek has done it, hell even ridley scott is going to do it with alien. So some feel that singer hit a fowl ball (or struck out) with superman, but he is still a good director, even spielberg was forgiven for 1941... sort of. temple of doom was even a much different film then raiders, but spielberg made last crusade which for me, hit a bigger mark than raiders did and i forgave him for doom.
and all of this talk about singer sh*tting on the fans, and leaving the franchise... well he has every right, he is a passionate film maker, and felt that superman was a better film to visit than a third x-men. hell after tim burton left the batman series i remember people being glad of it, but once schumacher took the reigns, fans pleaded to have burton come back.
i think singer still has passion for the franchise, no matter what take on it he will have there will be at least one person to gripe about the film.
