Chris Columbus has acquired the rights to Charles Yu's debut novel How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe, which Brendan Bellomo will direct, and Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe will produce for 1492 Pictures.

The story revolves around Charles Yu, a time travel machine repairman who has spent the past ten years spanning the decades in search of his father. When he falls into a potentially disastrous time loop, he must find a way to save the entire universe.

There is no set start date for How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe. Casting is expected to begin shortly.

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe comes to theaters in 2013.
