'Breaking Bad' Star Aaron Paul in Talks for 'The Dark Tower'

The actor has met with director Ron Howard about playing a major role in this sprawling adaptation of the Stephen King novels.
When The Dark Tower was in development with Universal Pictures back in 2011, it was considered one of the most ambitious projects in Hollywood history. Stephen King's seven-book series would have been adapted into three movies and two limited-run TV shows that were set to debut between the films. However, that all fell apart when the studio dropped the project in July 2011. Warner Bros. expressed interest in reviving the project back in August 2012, but they ultimately passed a few weeks later. The last we heard about The Dark Tower was in September, when director Ron Howard insisted that the adaptation is not dead yet, but we have had no proof of that beyond the director's word, until now.

Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul revealed in a new interview that he has met with director Ron Howard, to discuss playing protagonist Eddie Dean. Here's what he had to say to Ain't It Cool News, when their interviewer said he'd be their ideal choice to play Eddie Dean.

"I've had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of the show (Breaking Bad, naturally), which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am. They're definitely planning on making it. I'm excited. Their goal is to do three films, but also have a television element to it, which will be very interesting. From what I hear, Eddie Dean is a pretty epic, iconic character."

Eddie Dean was introduced in the second of Stephen King's The Dark Tower books, The Drawing of Three, where gunslinger Roland Deschain encounters three doors that lead into New York City. Eddie is a heroin addict who passes through the door into Roland's world and becomes his companion on this journey to The Dark Tower.

The Dark Tower doesn't have a studio home at this time, but director Ron Howard still clearly plans on making this happen. Javier Bardem was rumored to play Roland Deschain when the project was at Universal, and, when Warner Bros. was circling the project, the studio was eyeing Russell Crowe to play the gunslinger. Akiva Goldsman and Mark Verheiden are writing the script.

The Dark Tower is in development . The film is directed by Ron Howard.

You know, I never would have thought of him for this 2 years ago before I watched Breaking Bad, but now that it's been suggested, it's really a no brainer: Eddie Dean is basically Jesse Pinkman.
