On the subject of the villain in Superman: The Man of Steel:
I think it would certainly be interesting, I think there are a lot of things you could do with Brainiac. He's been given a lot of power and a lot of different abilities over the years in the comics, as far as I understand. I know that DC is working on a Brainiac storyline that they are excited about and I think combining the two and have that flow between the comics and the movie would be a nice thing. I honestly think there are a lot of interesting things you can do with Brainiac. Controlling people, controlling technology, a lot of cool things.
Routh also discussed the idea of the movie being darker compared with Superman Returns:
I don't know, I don't think the character necessarily has to be darker, I think he is kind of dark in a sense, emotional dark, in Superman Returns, and the movie as a whole was slightly dark, they could have had more prowess in it I suppose, and I think that's one thing that can be done in the sequel, so I don't know how much darker you want to make it necessarily. You make the stakes higher, you make the villain darker, I think that's a way to do it. But I don't think Superman himself needs to be darker. He definitely has to struggle, how does Superman be a part of the world? And does he have to make sacrifices to be a part of that world? To fit in and what purpose does he really play in the world? Those are all kind of dark places to explore. But, I don't think Superman should ever be dark and brooding, that's not is nature. And that's now what people what to see. Like Brainiac or something like that, a situation when the villain is...
Superman: The Man of Steel is slated for release on 2010 from Warner Bros.
Superman: Man of Steel comes to theaters June 14th, 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Julia Ormond. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

Hope this one does better in the box office then Superman returns cause without Christopher Reeve as Superman it going to be hard to be a great movie......... Not that Brandon Routh sucks as Superman but his not the one that made me wish I could fly as a boy.
R.I.P. Christopher Reeve( The real Superman)

Brandon Routh Kicked ass as Superman/Clark! It bugs when you don't stick with the OG cast. Though Kate Bosworth was a little annoying. Somebody get her better hair this time around will ya?

I just wanna see a huge sci-fi epic, chad. That to me doesn't scream "dark." Metropolis to me has always been the anti-Gotham. It's always bright, even at night.

Even though I agree with most of what you guys are saying with the not having a dark tone to Superman... did people forget that the Doomsday comic is very dark toned? The Superman logo is bleeding and Supe himself gets his ass handed to him in that comic. If they made that film, everyone would go see it. Guaranteed. You can make the film gritty, without Superman himself gritty. In a sense, he is like Batman he doesn't kill people. Batman's not really gritty either, but the world he is living in is full of violence and chaos, making his film gritty. Superman's world can be gritty too since people do try to kill other people etc it's common sense. Superman would obviously be goodie toe shoes and is against all those things so he stops evil like he always has. He can see be corny and be the standard of normal and good while he fights gritty, violence criminals or villians.

It's still going to be called Superman: The Man of Steel and Routh has potential to be a great superman with a right script, i.e. Millar's

Screw Superman Man Of Steel and bring on Mark Millar's 3 part masterpiece. Also Brandon Routh sucked big dirty funky monkey balls in "Returns" and not only should be replaced but imprisoned in the wet paper bag he could never act his way out of....

I agree totally VIS. Why people think Superman needs to be dark is beyond me. Superman never has or needs to be in my opinion. Batman films are dark, like the original comic, not like the 60's tongue-in-cheek version. We can't have all superhero films being dark. Even if the next Superman film's a total screw-up, at least let's have a bit of variety.

Superman doesn't has to be dark to not be a pansy. Dark to me is gritty and realistic, like tdk. Superman needs to be a huge sci-fi flick....far from realistic. He's an alien...and his suit is red, blue, and yellow. far from dark. People keep confusing "tough" with "dark." You can make superman tough w/o making him dark. Have him beat the tar out of some supervillains. Explosions...action...sci-fi...big showdowns...love story...THAT'S Superman. Not darkness

THE JOKER
i disagree about making superman darker. he needs to be. he is darker even on the animated series and justice league than he is in the film. The villian was far dark enough in the film. Lex was the highlight. No change needed there. Superman needs to stop being such a pansy

One more thing: I'm tired of hearing people say "we need another villain." Lex HAS to be in the superman film, but that doesn't necessarily mean he has to be the main villain. Look at magneto-in all 3 x-films. Dr. doom-in both FFs. Lex can be behind the scenes. Think b4 you type

Frenzy2001
No offence to Kevin Spacey (he was the one bright spot of Superman Returns), but they deffinetly need another villian in the next superman. More specifically, a super powered villian like Brainiac. I don't know about everyone else, but I'd really like to see a super powered brawl in the next Superman movie. I think with today's CG capabilities, it would be one hell of a visual treat. Of course that comes second to a good story. A good story is what this franchise needs most.

Okay, to clarify, RETURNS isn't the first film, a mistake several of you seem to be making. It's meant to take the place of III and IV in the Donner Series.
If Routh does Superman, and not Christopher Reeves playing Superman, he would do fine. I'm tired of seeing the Richard Donner character, even though it was good, it's been around to long and I think we've seen all it has to offer.
Bring on the Millar 3-part-epic script.

I agree with Cell,Superman Returns sucked,I liked it in the theater but when I bought it on dvd I thought to myself hay, this sucked the story was weak. But I do like Superman it's just the story sucked.Brandon was pretty good, but they should darken it up just a little. It is about time for Superman vs doomsday.

Thank God, someone in Hollywood knows that superman is not dark.
I think Brainiac is a great villain for the first movie, while doomsday is in the second, where he "dies" and then the third, we have Zod, and Luthor ending it.
