Brad Pitt Signs on for The Odyssey

Brad Pitt has one of Homer's classics under his belt and will take on the other as well. According to Variety, Pitt has came aboard Warner Bros. loose adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. Pitt starred Troy, in the loose adaptation of Homer's "The Illiad."

The film, however, will take Homer's tale and use it in a futuristic setting in outer space. While no screenwriter has been attached yet, WB hopes to have Pitt star in the film and George Miller direct.

Homer's original poem dealt with the aftermath of the Trojan War, with the noble warrior Odysseus and the trials and tribulations of his return home.

No production schedule has been released.

Since they already made "Troy" in 2004. Then why not make "The Odyssey" as a sequel with Sean Bean returning as Odysseus? It'd be WAY better. And more interesting to see that story finally told with proper effects to give it that realistic spin that the older adaptations were lacking.

I love the original and I think it'll be played out well with the use of new technology and in some cases...better story telling =P

Could be really good, could be really bad.
Kind of like a taco from a street taco stand. You never really know how it's going to taste, or how it's going to come out.

Could be cool. I mean, it'd be weird if he was playing Odysseus back in that time era, right after being Achilles...yeah that'd be really weird, and confusing to some. Since it's in space you won't be thinking about him as Achilles throughout the movie lol. I think what they are going for is like Treasure Planet but real people lol. Where they mix Jack Sparrow and pirates with futuristic space settings. I thought it was a nifty idea. I mean look how awesome Stargate was based on the same concept.

It would have been nice if they had followed Troy directly, and used Sean Bean again for the part of Odysseus, and remained more or less true to the setting.

F*ck that sh*t. Outer space? really? is it so hard to just stick with the story? I think this movie should pick up right were troy left off. I hate to say it but i highly anticipated a new Odyssey movie, but now im pissed.

    Sounds pretty out there...I'm in!!

I'm sure the movie will be bad ass, but I still would have preferred the continuing story after Troy.... though it would be hard to make it realistic like Troy since the Gods are much more involved in the story of the Odyssey.

Some other members had an interesting conversation about that in my review of Troy. Click on my user icon and click on my Troy review if you're interested what a couple of members had to say.

The last time someone took the Odyssey and turned it on its ass, we came out with O' Brother Where Art Thou, so I'll hold my tongue about this one until I hear more.

  21. AnnoyingFilmCritic

I'm on the fence about this one...Warner Bros. probably thinks that a big production swords and sandals epic (like Troy & Alexander)would lose money, therefore a setting change to space would be less risk to the coveted 18-34 year old demographic.

    It's got potential...

  24. The Kwisatz Haderach

Well put K-man. I do like the sci-fi twist for some reason, it could be really cool. But I would like to see Sean Bean reprise his role as Odyessus and make the Odyssey, that would be sick. Hell Id be down with an updated verion of Sinbad.

    stick to the original story...
Sean Bean for Odysseus and Pitt for Achilles

  26. K-Man

A story with similar story structure to that of The Odyssey taking place in space would be incredible but not the actual story and characters. Given Brad Pitt hasn't done a single bad film in well over a decade, I find it hard to believe that this would be any different. However, I just dont understand why it is so hard to make an epic theatrical version of the original The Odyssey, its such a great story!! It would be incredible on the big screen with a good, solid director/cast behind it! Sean Bean was great as Odysseus in Troy, bring him back with an even better director than Wolfgang and you have a major hit on your hands! They just need to take it darker in tone than Troy, the way Robert Zemeckis did with the animated uncut version of Beowulf (except obviously The Odyssey would be live action), and it would be spot on! F*ck, having said that, how great would a live action version of The Odyssey be directed by Zemeckis!!?? Anyway, back to the space version, I'm sure it will be good with Pitt behind it, but I still prefer the original.

I was gonna comment on how wierd it was for him to play Odyseus after playing Achilles opposite of that character in Troy, but now I just want to comment on how stupid I think turning this story into sci fi is.
