“@rsavenell: You are on people's lists as top choice for Star Wars, yet haven't confirmed. Please end this tease!”Not doing Star Wars.
— Brad Bird (@BradBirdA113) November 18, 2012
“@clarkgoble: tell me your next one is the new Star Wars!”Nope. A science fiction film. Not Star Wars.
— Brad Bird (@BradBirdA113) November 18, 2012
“@joesmonster: @wearebuffaloz Is it Star Wars Episode VII?Because I really hope it's Star Wars Episode VII...”It's not Episode VII.
— Brad Bird (@BradBirdA113) November 18, 2012
“@geoffbreedwell: You're not doing EP7? Why not? You're perfect for it!”Thanks. But the science fiction film I AM doing is gonna be cool.
— Brad Bird (@BradBirdA113) November 18, 2012
“@gregaveryowens: Totally just saw @bradbirda113 slam Star Wars. Brilliant!”I'm not slamming Star Wars. I'm just doing "1952"! Sheesh!
— Brad Bird (@BradBirdA113) November 18, 2012
That said, Michael Arndt is a fantastic writer and Kathy Kennedy is a brilliant producer. I will be first in line to see the new STAR WARS.
— Brad Bird (@BradBirdA113) November 18, 2012
Since there isn't much information released about the director's secretive sci-fi project 1952, it was speculated by some that this project may just be a fake title to throw fans off, masking that it really is Star Wars: Episode VII. It turns out that is not the case, although we still don't know what 1952 is about. Stay tuned for the latest regarding Star Wars: Episode VII.
Star Wars: Episode VII comes to theaters in 2015 and stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

I nominate Gore - first and foremost no one wants to screw it up, two: It's Disney property now
Three: The Disney directors should be considered
Four: All the A- list directors know they can make it look better but are hesitant because they want to play it safe...And it's within Disney.
Hence the fact that they don't want to direct a SW film, there's the return of Luke Skywalker.
George wants a director to tell his story, that's not always good because who ever directs the 7th installment or future films if they do continue may not want to do it his way.
In other words, a story teller or artist shouldn't be told how to write or paint, film, take pictures or draw. It needs to be their own story, if someone like Pete Jackson wanted to do a SW film he would write his own story not one that George wants him to do.

Why does nobody want to direct Star Wars?

I know what you mean, @the-movieghost. Whoever ends up directing though, I'd really like to see a film that takes on the visual look of the upcoming Star Wars 1313 game.
@ejk1 - I think you're right. It's a mixture of all those reasons. Hesitency to come onto such a huge franchise, pressure to deliver a solid Star Wars installment, perhaps deliberation to get involved with Lucas and his "original story" he's got. Regardless, things aren't looking so great at the moment, wouldn't you say?

Disappointing. Bird would have been my top choice for this. Which is not to say there aren't any number of other suitable choices. I'm still excited to see who they choose (though it sounds like it's likely to be that guy who did Safety Not Guaranteed).
@jasonkat Lucas is retired. If he wanted to have complete control and make more Star Wars movies, he wouldn't have sold to Disney. I think he just really knows how beloved the property is and wanted to give other filmmakers the chance to take a crack at it, rather than sit unused.

Stupid question but..why doesnt george himself come back to direct it? i sort of lost track of him, does he still direct? is he still alive? why wont he just come up w a new hit like the org. star wars. rather than disney picking out other names.

Jckson Ripner
My guesses (in order):
1. Matthew Vaughn
Mark Millar said Vaughn dropped out of the new X-Men movie to make 'Secret Service' (a new collaboration between the two). He also mentioned that they both discussed Vaughn making Episode VII and how he'd be a great choice if selected. If Vaughn is offered Episode VII, he'll definitely take it (and just produce 'Secret Service' like he did 'Kick-Ass 2').
2. Gore Verbinski
Thought he was a near-cert initially 'cause of his relationship with Disney. Would be a solid choice.
3. Andrew Stanton
4. Joe Cornish
Bit of a wild card, but did a good job with 'Attack The Block' and also worked as a writer on 'TinTin', which Kathleen Kennedy produced (she mentioned wanting to bring on people she's worked with before).

@narrator But why? Is it because they fear Lucas looking over their shoulder? They fear the script may not be good? They fear the possibility of screwing up? All valid reasons I suppose, although one could argue Lucas made enough mistakes in the prequel trilogy to let the next guy off the hook for a bad film.

no one is going to direct star wars 7, george created the franchise, its his, sorry, I don't think it will be directed by anyone else, no director wants to touch star wars, why? cause they don't want to destroy it

@narrator That's very worrying to me. As much as I want to think it'll bring the best choice, I'm leaning more towards the other way.

Brad Bird would have done an amazing job, but I think this A- List Directors are turning it down, because they are fans of the Original trilogy and they are afraid of Screwing it up, but in my opinion Bird, Matt Reeves, and J.J. Abrams would've pull off an amazing film, Examples: MI: Ghost-Protocol, Star Trek, and the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Good. Bird is overrated, although, perhaps better than anyone they're probably going to get at this point. I think Tarantino was echoing the sentiments of most credible directors when he said he wanted nothing to do with this.

Interesting... the list of acceptable potential directors is thinning more and more every day. I love how this was supposed to be the most sought after project in Hollywood, but it's been the complete opposite. No one of any credibility seems to want to touch this with a ten foot pole.
