After battling at the top of the charts for almost a month, Disney's Tangled and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 finally fell from the top spots last week to make room for two new films. The third chapter of the popular The Chronicles of Narnia series, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader debuted at number one with $24 million, while the new drama thriller, The Tourist starring Oscar nominee Johnny Depp and Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, debuted at number two with $16.4 million. But with the Christmas season upon us, four exciting new movies enter the charts this week including, the highly anticipated sequel Tron: Legacy, the live-action Yogi Bear, the romantic comedy How Do You Know and Oscar bait The Fighter. With all of these buzzed about new movies debuting this week, does reigning champ, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader, have a chance at holding on to it's crown for a second week in a row?
Predicted to debut at number one this week is the sequel to the groundbreaking 1982 film, Tron, Tron: Legacy. The film picks up twenty-eight years after the first movie and stars the originals two leads Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) and Bruce Boxleitner (Scarecrow and Mrs. King), as well as Garrett Hedlund (Friday Night Lights), Olivia Wilde (Cowboys and Aliens), Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon), James Frain (True Blood) and Beau Garrett (Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer). Currently the movie has an average rating of a 4.4 on our site. Out of the thirty-six people who have rated the film, twenty-four of them have given it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had over 30,000 views. Here is what our official reviewer had to say about the movie, "Its super fun and entertaining, but the heart of the film is at times lost in the spectacular visuals. Regardless, Jeff Bridges is excellent and the 3D is perfectly used to enhance the overall experience."
The movie is predicted to earn about $52.1 million in its opening weekend.
Predicted to debut at number two this week is the live-action version of the classic cartoon Yogi Bear. The movie stars the voice talent of Dan Aykroyd (The Blues Brothers) and Justin Timberlake (The Social Network). Currently the movie has an average rating of a 3.8 on our site. Out of the thirteen people who have rated the film, eight of them have given it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had over 27,000 views. Here is what one of our readers had to say about the new movie, "The only thing worse then a Yogi Bear movie is a sequel. Hopefully that doesn't happen!" The movie is predicted to earn about $23.4 million in its opening weekend.
Predicted to drop two places from its debut last week to number three is the third chapter of the popular The Chronicles of Narnia series, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader. The film follows the adventures of the Pevensie children as they make their third trip to the magical land of Narnia. The film stars Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley, Will Poulter and Bill Nighy, Simon Pegg and Liam Neeson. Last week, the movie made $6,752 on each of its 3,555 screens for an opening weekend total of about $24 million. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $14.9 million this weekend.
Predicted to debut at number four this week is the new comedy from Broadcast News director James L. Brooks called How Do You Know. The film stars an all-star cast, which includes Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line), Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man), Owen Wilson (Behind Enemy Lines) and three-time Oscar winner Jack Nicholson (As Good As It Gets). Currently the movie has an average rating of a 2.5 on our site. Out of the two people who have rated the film, neither gave it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had only 3,387 views. Here is what one of our readers had to say about the movie, "Scenes take twice as long as they should but we do learn how people make romantic choices." The movie is predicted to earn about $13.6 million in its opening weekend.
Predicted to round off the top five this week in its debut in wide release is Three Kings director David O. Russell new film, The Fighter. The movie is based on the true story of boxing champ Micky Ward and stars an impressive cast of actors including Mark Wahlberg (The Other Guys), Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), Amy Adams (Leap Year) and Melissa Leo (Don McKay). Currently the movie has an average rating of 3.8 on our site. Out of the thirteen people who have rated the film, five of them have given it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had over 10,000 views. Here is what our official reviewer had to say about the movie, "Powerful, moving and entertaining, The Fighter is absolutely one of the best films of the year. Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams are really incredible but it is Christian Bale and Melissa Leo who steal the film with their frighteningly real performances." The movie is predicted to earn about $13.3 million in its first weekend in wide release.
The rest of the top ten films at the box office this weekend are predicted to look like this:
Predicted to fall three places from last week to number six is Tangled, the 50th animated feature film from Walt Disney Pictures, based on the classic "Rapunzel" fairy tale. The movie stars a talented cast of voice actors including Mandy Moore (A Walk to Remember), Zachary Levi (Chuck), Donna Murphy (Star Trek: Insurrection), Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy). While the movie dropped 33.7% last week from the week before, it was shown on 3,565 screens, earning $4,020 on each screen for a weekend total of about $14.3 million. In just three weeks the movie has earned around $115 million, which is not quite half of its purported $260 million production budget. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $8.8 million this weekend.
Predicted to fall a drastic five places from its debut last week to number seven is the new drama thriller, The Tourist. The movie stars Oscar nominee Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End) and Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider), as well as Timothy Dalton (Toy Story 3) and Rufus Sewell (Amazing Grace). Last week, the movie made $5,977 on each of its 2,756 screens for an opening weekend total of about $16.4 million. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $8.6 million this weekend.
Predicted to slip two places from last week to number eight is the new film from The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky called Black Swan, which examines the competitive world of ballet. The movie is already earning Oscar buzz for its lead actress, Natalie Portman (Garden State), and also stars Mila Kunis (The Book of Eli), Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands), Vincent Cassel (Ocean's Twelve) and Barbara Hershey (Beaches). Last week, the movie went up an astonishing 128.9% from the week before and added seventy-two theaters for a total of ninety. The film made $36,726 on each screen for a weekend total of $36,726, bringing its total gross up to $5.5 million, which is almost half of its $13 million production budget. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $8.5 million this weekend.
Predicted to drop five places from last week to number nine is the long awaited final chapter of the beloved Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1. The film features returning stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham Carter, Bill Nighy and Rhys Ifans. While the movie dropped 50.1% last week from the week before, it was shown on 3,577 screens, earning $2,372 on each screen for a weekend total of about $8.4 million. In just over a month the movie has earned around $257.6 million, which already places it 54th on the all-time highest grossing domestic movies list. The movie is predicted to earn an additional $4.6 million this weekend.
Finally, falling five places from last week to number ten is the fifth film from director Tony Scott and actor Denzel Washington (Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, Deja Vu, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3) called Unstoppable. The film is based on the true story of a runaway train in Pennsylvania and also stars Chris Pine (Star Trek), Rosario Dawson (Sin City) and Kevin Dunn (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen). People in the first couple showings are always overly excited. There's nothing more annoying than audiences laughing at every little part of a movie that isn't funny (like Gollum's monologue in LotR).

I hope Tron Legacy gets that much but I don't think it will. If you want to see more realistic predictions go to Boxoffice.com. They've been doing this for years and usually get their predictions right.

@Blockbusterfan001 I know right? I can't believe people will waste their money on awful and stupid kids films. Kids films are okay, if their aren't dumb like Yogi Bear.

Owkay,.... i saw TRON,... It was all lights and no action. I am sure it will disappoint even the hardcore TRON fans.

Tron is supposedly doing super well. Deadline reports it may end up with $47 mil, though that's a very loose number. Everything else fell in as predicted. How Do You Know bombed :(

Tron was a great movie, it had everything that made the first one good and fun. I like that some question weren't answered. It leave more storyline for any other sequels.

Good predictions. I'd be surprised to see Tron break $55 mil however. I think HOw Do You Know will tank sadly :( Yogi Bear will get around $20, but not much higher. I think Black Swan will really break out this weekend. Maybe even hit double digits.

@Dave: It won't beat "Avatar." When you think about it, the motion capture was the only updated technology visible on screen. The on location NZ shoot was in the same place that PJ shot "King Kong," and you can recognize the jungle landscapes as being of the same digital calibur. "Avatar" only made so much cuz marketing was centered around JC's imressive resume, the fact that "Titanic" was his last film, and the fact that he hadn't done a big film in 12yrs. All 3 of those were meant to imply a great film. And I loved JC too, and so I like many ran to IMAX to see "Avatar" as it was also marketed to be an IMAX experience, despite that the 3D didn't do much for me. However, "Tron" was a cult hit, and Jeff Bridges is just awesome, so with those 2 things, and the fact that this film is being heavily advertised as a 3D IMAX engagement, then I think it'll make a major gross percentage profit after breaking even. [What was its budget?] But I doubt it'll near Avatar's box office thunder. PS: You saw "King's Speech"? Where??? I can't find it anywhere except LA in the western USA. :P
