Looks like the weekend is Thor's to lose. The Nordic god seems to be tracking for a $60-$70 million opening. It could have perhaps done a bit better if the Universal mega-hit Fast Five wasn't presenting stiff competition at the box office for the fan boy crowd. So far reviews seem pretty positive for this action adventure.
Fast Five should rake in somewhere between $38-40 million.
Ladies and gents who love wedding movies (and who among us doesn't?) have two new releases to check out this weekend. The first is the rom-com Something Borrowed starring blond and bumptious Kate Hudson alongside brunette (and therefore EVIL!) Ginnifer Goodwin. Seems like another in a long line of forgettable Kate Hudson chick flicks.
The other wedding on the weekend docket is Jumping the Broom with Angela Bassett and Loretta Devine as members of warring families who must come together in what is being billed as a "hilarious comedy." We'll see about that.
Something Borrowed is looking to bring in about $12 million while Jumping the Broom is looking to make somewhere closer to $10 million.
Jodie Foster's new Mel Gibson movie The Beaver opens in the Top 10 markets in about 22 theaters. It will be interesting to see how this does. Reviews have been middling to positive and I suppose those curious to see Gibson's less-than-triumphant return to the screen will turn out. But I have a hard time imagining this movie about a beaver puppet starring an abusive anti-semite will have legs at the box office. Too bad for Jodie because she's pretty great all around. Better luck next time!

Honestly Marvel has put all their stock into the Avengers movie being the be all end all of movies. Like its the next money making machine like Avatar was. And that's going to be the big test. If Avengers fails then Marvel looks dumb as hell. Spider Man will probably save the studio but making spin off movies of Hawk Eye and Nick Fury are jokes at best. They are just another Punisher waiting to happen. Marvel needs to focus on the reboot of X Men and making sure Spider Man out performs the previous films. Hell ol spidey is getting played out. I do like seeing the Lizard finally and maybe they will get Venom right this time. But I think Avengers better bring it after all the hype they been giving it.

@superman81 - like @iamfratson said. Domestic doesn't mean what it once did. 66 Million is VERY good. It will continue to earn throughout the week and may reach 100 Million by next weekend. You want a bad opening, look at Mars Needs Moms. You got to look at the whole picture, not just domestic weekend numbers.
In other words, you "couldn't be more wrong." :P

Thor was awesome and it will make its money back but 66 million opening weekend domestically just won't cut it. I'm sorry but domestically that's a flop. It was an excellent movie but this doesn't bode well for Captain America. Hell it might not even bode well for Green Lantern although I think GL will out perform both Captain America and Thor. I think Xmen has a chance to be amazing.

@themoviefanatic What dont you agree with about Thor? That is deserves to be seen? Or that its a fun movie? I say it deserves it because it got such bad "pre-viewing" vibes but turns out to be a very solid and fun movie to watch. hell even my buddy who falls asleep in EVERY movie but tags along just so i dont have to look like a loney geek stayed awake was asking me all sorts of questions as he was interested in the theology. That speaks volumes to me becuase if there was ever an average movie goer its him.
He doesnt know about actors or directors or producers like we all obssess over and yet he was really interested to learn more about it.
I'm just curious, we agree on a lot of stuff so enlighten me please sir, to your opinion.

Something about Thor always turned me off from the character but of course i saw the movie and like most of you i was blown away by it. And even thoughy Thor die hards who didn't like the fact that he KNEW he was Thor should be pleased that by allowing Thor to remeber is cut to the chase and also set up some unexpectedly funny moments. Loved it.

Even if didn't make as much as predicted, Marvel should be very pleased with the final product. I would love to see Branagh direct the sequel to Thor after seeing how well he did with the first film and I SO look forward to seeing how Whedon's Avengers builds on this visual epic! Capt. America now has some big shoes to fill, that's for sure.

Other than Paranormal Activity, an example for financial success would be Twilight, unfortunately. I mean, Summit really found a gold egg. it only cost 37 million to make, and made over 300 million world wide, with 190 + million domestically.
