@thedude1 As Caviezel is still working and has been in big Hollywood movies since Passion, I don't buy that argument. Same goes for Gibson, who made Apocalypto after Passion, which was well very well-received. If anything, those guys had a big hand in ruining their own careers just through stunts that went public, in Gibson's case unintentionally, and in Caviezel's case, intentionally. His anti-stem cell research video in criticism of Michael J Fox was not his most glowing moment.

@shuabert Fair enough you made some good points. But because Hollywood is so anti-Christian since they blacklisted Jim Caviezel because of Passion of the Christ and his faith it is hard for big directors and actors to do movies such as Courageous.

@thedude1 Not at all. Passion was made by a well-established filmmaker with well-known actors and was quite expertly-made. I saw Fireproof, and the filmmakers there (who also made Courageous) were amateurish and don't know subtlety. There's nothing worse than a message film that bludgeons you with its moral, without bothering to establish interesting or realistic characters.
And that's completely not going into what I assume is an overly simplistic glorification of law enforcement "heroes" that trumpets patriarchy and "family values" (read: a blatantly conservative agenda).

@shuabert So I guess you also ignore Passion of the Christ as well.

@thedude1 It's going to be a sh*tty movie no matter how much money it makes. Emotionally manipulative religious filmmaking is not high art. It's a niche movie. Like Tyler Perry's movies, it may make a lot of money, but that doesn't mean anyone will actually like it.

@corey Not sure on how long but my guess would be Thursday would be the last day since the DVD/Blu Ray release is on Tuesday.

Corey
@thedude1 Really? How long did they extend it to?

Why all the hate for Courageous? This movie made 3.1 million dollars on Friday with very little advertising and with only 1,161 theaters. Now that is by definition a monstrous hit.

@corey Not true they extended that. Which is how it made 3.2 million dollars on Friday.

@slysnide is right. Lion King cannot be in the top-ten at all. It was a two-week deal. Its gone.

What's Courageous?? My money is for Moneyball this weekend since I'm seeing it.. 50/50 deserves more however, heard nothing but good rave thusfar.

Christians sure love patriarchy, but I still don't see that movie coming in at number 1. What's up with no love for 50/50? I see it cracking the top five. The positive buzz on Moneyball could bump it up to first, but I think Lion King will probably hold for a third week, which is funny because Disney originally billed it as only a two-week run.

I've never even heard of Courageous lol

"The Lion King" is out of theaters. At least today was the final day, if not yesterday. 2 weeks only.

How the heck can Courageous make it to the top. Sorry, but I highly disagree.

@corey It had more pre-ticket sales than any other release or holdover this weekend. Fireproof was a huge breakout hit ($65 mil in total revenue--home video and $33 in box office--on a $1mil budget). This has tapped hugely into nearly every faith group and it will surprise everyone. Watch it happen.

@corey @moviegeek Thanks...I've never seen posters for it, or have it marketed on any TV channels, how will be number 1 if it wasn't marketed much?
This chart over on Boxofficemojo is more accurate:

2 Moneyball $13.2M
3 Dolphin Tale $12.4M
4 50/50 $11.5M
5 Dream House $10.7M
6 What's Your Number? $10M
7 Courageous $6.9M
8 Abduction $5.5M
9 Contagion $5.4M

September and October are considered to be the month where most enervated and unexciting films are made because there are no more blockbusters! Still these films look interesting and a comeback film was made a champ last week!

@balanorange I totally agree about Courageous. I think it will surprise at number 1 for the weekend. I don't think it will get as high as 22 mil, but high teens is where I'm looking at. The movie has a HUGE amount of buzz from the faith community. And Soul Surfer is proof that it's a viable market.

Moneyball, Lion King, What's Your Number, Dolphin Tale, Dream House.
Wish 50/50 wasn't such a hard subject that it conflicts with it's box office performance. Heard it's fantastic.
