BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS: Will Rio Fly Away with the Top Spot?

PREDICTED WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

Will there ever be a weekend during which a completely non-animated movie takes the top spot at the box office? I don't know. But it doesn't look like it's going to be this weekend. The tropical bird-tastic Rio will be swooping into cineplexes, and will likely fly off with about $35-40 million. I think based on how marvelously Hop has managed to do over the past two weeks that folks are still hungry for their animated fantasias. Rio seems like it's much better than the bunny movie, so I think it will play really strong. Maybe even more than the $40 million. This comes from the creative team behind the Ice Age movies, so a built in fan base should be ready to turn out as well. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs grossed an astounding $886 million. So, the foreign box office will be interesting to track on this one as well. And that will probably be where the real story lies.

It should be a big weekend all around because the highly-anticipated (or so they say) Scream 4 will be taking a stab at crowds as well. The iconic horror film's two sequels each opened to an impressive $30 million but that was a long, long time ago. Are people still going to turn out for Neve Campbell? Did they ever? Some reviews are pretty positive, others are fairly dismissive. It's expected to make about $27 million this weekend, yet whether it has legs is harder to tell. The R rating won't help with getting the teenagers in, but I expect a fair amount of Scream fans do turn out - I know I'm planning to check in on it.

I've seen a couple of places predicting a much bigger opening for Scream 4 - some projecting that it will even be the winner for the weekend - with a gross of $40 million or more. That seems a bit much, but, hey, who knows? I hope it's a big hit - Courteney Cox deserves it!

Also looking intriguing is The Conspirator from Robert Redford. This Abe Lincoln yarn might do well, like the adult-skewing films Limitless and Source Code. This is a period piece, however, so all bets are off. The King's Speech has done exceedingly well, but I'm not sure if this has the same broad appeal. It's only in 706 theaters, so it's haul won't be anywhere near as big as the other two new releases.

Attention Objectivists! The most curious entry this weekend is Atlas Shrugged: Part 1. This oddball indie movie, starring just about no one you've ever heard of, is an unlikely movie adaptation of the classic Ayn Rand novel of a mid-century dystopia. There should be a built-in audience of hard core Rand fanatics, but I have a hard time imagining this doing particularly boffo box office. It's being released on 300 screens in about 80 markets. If you're the audience for this, enjoy the philosophical discourse!

Well thank God my wish came true. Scream 4 only made 8.7 million Friday and it will barely make over 20 million for the weekend. Now hopefully this is the end of the franchise.

you know @diaigma and @jptheredskull as well as @dan1 - my dad works for Disney so it would be easy to capture Lasseter. Who knows, maybe the blu-ray release of The Incredibles mite contain an easter egg for a sequel trailer. Didn't u guys know that there is an actual The Incredibles 2? it's the video game they made awhile back, rea. long time ago around 2006-07. check it out.

No Wall-E 2. The only one that's remotely sequelible is Incredibles. If they want sequels, make new films with planned sequels, like Dreamworks is :P

@ghostman you and @diaigma and @dan1 should join me in hunting down John Lasseter and torture him until he makes The Incredibles 2 and WALL-E 2.

@jptheredskull seriously u cried? or are you making fun of @diaigma because that was my favorite scene in the movie other than the opening chase and that 7 flip car crash.
P.S. @jptheredskull I agree 100% bring on The Incredibles 2 movie :) plus we should start a petition on facebook to get it made...

@ghostman - I've never known anyone to cry over a Bond film, so that already has that against it. I was quite pleased that no one thought the trailer was funny with Rio today, kids included. As for Bugs life, my least favorite of all. Obnoxious.

  20. Ghostman

@diaigma well their's always Cars 2, but I'm gonna go easy on it since it has potential to be better than the first one. Which btw isn't my favorite Pixar film, next A Bug's Life.

@diaigma@jptheredskull I have no problem with Scream 3, it's an okay film. Except that it has too many flaws unlike the first two (which are great-but also have small flaws too). It's more of a funny and cliched film that has too much going on, and I hated the ending to Scream 3. That's why I'm excited to see the fourth one and see how these characters changed over the last 11yrs

@jptheredskull - I'd reply with a facepalm, then ask if you've changed for the better, followed by monitoring your posts, for old times sake :P

@ghostman - from the perspective of a family man, most families don't preorder tickets. Many get theirs just as the trailers start (saw that today), but you're right. We'll see. Rio was 100% until American critics started to pan it and unfairly compare it with Pixar's latest. Snobs. I wonder what will happen when a Pixar movie fails to make them cry . . . :P

Scream 4 has been getting mostly positive reviews with a 65% on the tomatoe-meter, while Rio has a 72% rating. Fandango reports their were more advanced tickets sold for Scream 4 rather than Rio with a for every 3 Rio advanced tickets sold, Scream 4 sold 7 advanced tickets. Rio has about 3800 theatre screening where Scream 4 has 3400 screenings. I also believe the exposure to Hop being number 1, will make parents not take their kids to see another family film for the 3rd wk in a row. Another thing, is that Rio is in 3D...which only means an extra 3.50 increase for tickets; and we all know that 3D movies for 2011 have been failing lately. Only time can tell, and we'll just have to wait and see...
