PREDICTED WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
I don't know about you, but I'm a little bleary-eyed after getting up at 5:30 AM to watch the royal nuptials. Thusly, I'm not going to any movies tonight, but the rest of America probably isn't feeling quite so tired. So let's see what the Box Office Crystal Ball forecasts for our dear sweet film industry (America's royalty?) this weekend.
People are buzzing that today's take for Fast Five, the 4th sequel to The Fast and the Furious, could reach $30 million or so. WOW. I guess moviegoers are starved for some summer movie action after a few long weeks of animated movies dominating the top spot. If that information tracks, it looks like the film is poised to make at least $75 million over the weekend. Impressive because this is bigger than all the previous entries in the franchise. Get ready for a blockbuster season.
Previous box office champ Rio (with two weeks in the #1 position) should finally fall, but expect it to stay strong and hold onto the number two spot. It looks like the other kiddie films Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil, Hop, Prom, and African Cats won't have the mojo to outfly the birds.
The other three new entries of note this week are not looking so strong. Prom is going to be the interesting one to watch because who, besides tweens, is going to see this? It's supposed to be a bit more mature than the High School Musical series it is clearly emulating, but I'm not sure who exactly is dying to see this. The predictions I've seen say it should make over $9 million. Will it? Disney's new production head sure hopes so as this is the first film to reach theaters that he has personally greenlit since assuming his post. The studio's African Cats might fall out of the top ten completely.
The same goes for Scream 4 apparently. The numbers I'm seeing indicate its genre-brother Insidious has better staying power. I'm surprised by that.
Meanwhile there is something called Dylan Dog: Dead of Night (which sounds rather unappealing) and it should bring up the rear of the new releases with just under $5 million.
Like I said earlier, I'm zonked from the royal wedding so I'm staying home. If you are heading to the movies this weekend, what will you be seeing?
Fast Five was released April 29th, 2011 and stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Matt Schulze, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot. The film is directed by Justin Lin.
Prom was released April 29th, 2011 and stars Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, DeVaughn Nixon, Danielle Campbell, Yin Chang, Jared Kusnitz, Nolan Sotillo, Cameron Monaghan. The film is directed by Joe Nussbaum.
Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil was released April 29th, 2011 and stars Glenn Close, Hayden Panettiere, Cheech Marin, Patrick Warburton, Joan Cusack, Bill Hader, David Ogden Stiers, Amy Poehler. The film is directed by Mike Disa.
Dylan Dog: Dead of Night was released April 29th, 2011 and stars Brandon Routh, Anita Briem, Sam Huntington, Peter Stormare, Taye Diggs, Paulington James Christensen III, Kurt Angle, Brian Steele. The film is directed by Kevin Munroe.

@diaigma, well the story itself is pretty bland and straightforward. This is THOR we're talking about here, it NEEDS action! :/

what no scream 4?

@diaigma Dreamworks always tends to open larger than Pixar (mostly because they produce more sequels and time their releases better). Yea... cars :P Green Lantern, at very best, could post Fantastic Four-type numbers (opening between $55 and $60), but that's not looking too likely.

@aaron-seth - so it's more story driven than action oriented? Just what I would expect from a Branagh film! Now I know I'll love it! Enjoy Bayformers 3, man :P

@diaigma watched Thor yesterday. NOT impressed by it at ALL. needed a lot more action. major FAIL!

@moviegeek - that's quite the forecast. Sucks to see GL so low, from your list, but I'm happy to see Panda is higher than Cars "Junkyard" 2. Agreed on Potter. The world-wide hype for the finale is unheard of. All we can do is see what happens. My next ticket is for Thor, not Fast Five :P

@dan1 Have you SEEN Fast Five's international numbers?? It'll probably smack $500-$600 mil worldwide.
@diaigma Again, neither Thor or Five have superb reviews. Critics like the movie in unanimity, but few love em.
If I was to predict the biggest openings of the summer it'd be:
Harry Potter: $160 (It has an excellent shot at breaking the weekend record)
Transformers 3: $155 (Likewise an excellent shot at the record, assuming they don't move the release to a Wednesday or Thursday)
Kung Fu Panda: $115
Pirates 4: $110
Hangover: $95
Cars 2: $80
Thor: $75
X-Men: $65
Cpt. America: $60
Super 8: $50
Rise of POA: $45
Green Lantern: $45
Cowboys and Aliens: $40
There it stands. I'll probably be way off on a few of these, but that's the fun of it :D

My guess is Fast Five - since being the only BIG movie opening this weekend could possibly do 80-85 million if it brings in it's fans in herds.
Thor/Green Lantern/Captain America combined will dominate the summer. Thor will definitely bring in the B/O without question. Those rave reviews will help as will word of mouth.

@dan1 - has a point.
@moviegeek - Thor's reviews are much better, but I can see that :P

@diaigma you're out of the loop lol. I think "Five" could open higher than Thor will next week. It's material is more accessible, even though they are both getting great reviews.
