BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS: Will Audiences Be Possessed by The Last Exorcism This Weekend?

PREDICTED WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

As predicted last week, the testosterone-filled action movie The Expendables managed to stay on top of the box office charts for a second week in a row despite tough competition from new entries like Vampires Suck, Piranha 3D, Nanny McPhee Returns and The Switch. But this weekend will not be as easy for Stallone and his crew with three new movies hitting the charts including the buzz-heavy horror film The Last Exorcism, the hip-hop heist film Takers and the re-release of a little known film called ... Avatar.

Predicted to debut at number one this weekend is the new horror film from producer Eli Roth (Hostel) called The Last Exorcism. The film is getting a lot of early attention from critics and fans alike and stars Patrick Fabian (Must Love Dogs), Louis Herthum (I Love You Phillip Morris) and Ashley Bell (State of Play). Currently the film has an average rating of 4.5 on our site. Out of the six people who have rated the film, half of them have given it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had over 18,000 views. Here is what one of our readers had to say about the new film: "Man, I am so pumped to see this!!!" The movie is predicted to earn $18.1 million this weekend in its debut.

Predicted to debut at number two this week is the hip-hop heist film Takers. The film boasts an all-star cast, which includes Paul Walker (Fast & Furious), Idris Elba(The Losers), Matt Dillon (Armored), Hayden Christensen (Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith), Michael Ealy (Miracle at St. Anna), Jay Hernandez (Quarantine), Chris Brown (Stomp the Yard), T.I. (American Gangster), and Zoe Saldana (Avatar). Currently the film has an average rating of 3.2 on our site. Out of the ten people who have rated the film, only four have given it five stars while the trailer for the movie has had almost 3,000 views. Here is what one of our readers had to say about the new film: "It looks cool." The movie is predicted to earn $12.5 million this weekend in its debut.

Predicted to fall two places from last week, to number three this week, for the first time since it debuted at number one over two weeks ago is the action-packed film, The Expendables from writer/director and star Sylvester Stallone. Besides Stallone, the film stars an array of the toughest action stars from several different decades including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. While the film dropped 52.6% last week from its debut week, it still managed to earn roughly $5,046 in each of its 3,270 theaters for a weekend total of $16.5 million. In just two weeks the film has earned $64.8 million and is predicted to earn another $9.3 million this weekend, which will put the film closer to making back its entire $80 million production budget.

Predicted to debut this week at number four is director James Cameron's re-release of his Oscar nominated, record breaking, 3D blockbuster Avatar, which now features nine minutes of never-before-seen footage. The film stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Stephen Lang and Giovanni Ribisi. Currently the film has an average rating of 4.5 on our site. Out of the 336 people who have rated the film, an astonishing 234 have given it five stars while the trailer for the special edition of the movie has over 23,000 views. The re-release of the film is predicted to generate an additional $8.4 million at the box office this weekend.

Rounding off the top five this week and predicted to fall two places from last week is Eat, Pray, Love directed by Ryan Murphy (Glee) and based on the internationally popular novel by author Elizabeth Gilbert. The film stars Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem, as well as Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins, Golden Globe winner James Franco and Billy Crudup (will someone give him an award already? I feel bad ever time I have to tag him onto the end of this all-star list). Last weekend the film dropped 48.1% from the previous week, but it still managed to earn roughly $3,894 in each of its 3,082 theaters for a weekend total of $12 million. In just two weeks the film has earned $47.1 million and is predicted to earn an additional $6.1 million this weekend, which will put it close to making back its entire $60 million production budget.

The rest of the top ten films at the box office this weekend are predicted to look like this:

Predicted to fall four places to number six from its impressive debut last week at number two is the vampire spoof-film Vampires Suck starring Ken Jeong, Matt Lanter, Anneliese van der Pol and Charlie Weber. Last weekend the film opened on 3,233 screens and earned about $3,774 on each for an opening weekend total of $12.2 million, which is not bad considering the film's $20 million production budget. The film is predicted to earn an additional $5.5 million this weekend at the box office.

Predicted to fall two places from last week to number seven is the buddy-cop action/comedy film The Other Guys. The film stars Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton and Eva Mendes. While the film dropped 42.0% last week from the previous week, and was seen on 179 less screens, it still managed to earn roughly $2,909 in each of its 3,472 theaters for a weekend total of $10.1 million. In just three weeks the film has already earned $88.1 million and is predicted to earn an additional $5.1 million this weekend, which will bring it extremely close to making back its entire $100 million production budget.

Predicted to fall two places from its debut last week to number eight this week is Piranha 3D, the remake of the classic John Sayles written, Joe Dante directed horror film from the 1970s. The film stars Adam Scott, Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Jerry O'Connell, Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfuss. Last week the film came in at a disappointing sixth place and earned only $4,063 on each of its 2,470 screens for an opening weekend total of $10 million, which is not quite half of its $24 million budget. The film is predicted to earn an additional $4.9 million at the box office this weekend.

Predicted to fall a drastic five places from its debut last week is Lottery Ticket, a new comedy starring Bow Wow, Brandon T. Jackson, Naturi Naughton, Keith David, Terry Crews, Mike Epps and Ice Cube. Last week the film opened on 1,973 screens and earned about $5,639 on each for an opening weekend total of $11.1 million, which is not bad considering the films $17 million production budget. It is expected to earn an additional $4.7 million this weekend.

Finally, predicted to fall one place from last week to number ten this week is unarguably one of the biggest hits of the summer, Inception, the extremely popular sci-fi action thriller from director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight). The film stars an incredible cast of actors including Oscar nominees Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page and Ken Watanabe, Oscar winners Marion Cotillard and Michael Caine, as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Lukas Haas. While the film dropped 30.5% last week from the previous week and was seen on 719 less screens, it still managed to earn roughly $3,265 in each of its 2,401 theaters for a weekend total of $7.8 million. Now in just six weeks the film has earned $262 million, which surpasses its purported $160 million production budget. The film is predicted to earn an additional $4.2 million this weekend. @WiseGuy I saw it and it was a good movie. Not great but good. This exorcism story had a great story to it. It also had great acting and a great screenplay. I think it'll be nominated for an oscar for acting.

Looks like its too close to call this weekend, Boxofficemojo has Last Exorcism with 21.3 million and Takers with 21.0 million. Guess we will have to wait until the final count is done. But looks like both movies over achieved by MovieWeb's standards anyways! And it was so good to see Inception bounce back up to 7th this week and that over hyped movie Avatar sitting all the way at #12.

Its also sad that all I could remember Cotton from was Saved By the Bell: The College Years. I was half way through the movie when it finally occured to me where I'd seen him before.

I agree, the acting was good and the script also, but that ending was not. Really a let down to an otherwise good movie.

Just saw Last Exorcism and it was ok but the ending sucked. Thought I'd give Takers a shot and it was bad, the acting was terrible. Not a good weekend at the movies.

@wiseguy, There have been some great exorcism flicks post Exorcist. Go see The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Requiem, both based on Anneliese Michel, whose exorcism you can hear via her Wiki-Wiki page. Haunting stuff.

But most of them suck. I'm in Washington, by the way. :P

The Avatar re-release couldn't even make more than Nanny McPhee Returns(1.3 million) on Friday. No chance of it making the top 10 now.

I agree takers will be number one because of people dying to see it for some reason i cannot fathom. It has horrible ratings and i saw it myself. I suspect last exorcism will be either 3rd or 2nd place

The last exorcism was the scariest movie so far this year. The ending was horrible, everyone at the theater was like "wat?" but I must say, this movie was good. Actor Patrick Fabian as Reverend Cotton Marcus deserves an oscar for this movie

Early box office predictions from www.deadline.com are Last Exorcism number one with 23.2 million, Takers at number two with 20.3 million, The Expendables number three with 8.2 million, Eat Pray Love at number four with 6.4 million, and The Other Guys finishing out the top five with 5.8 million. Looks like the Avatar predictions were WAY off.

The Last Exorcism will get around $15, Takers will fall similar to their prediction, though I think a bit higher. Avatar's prediction is ginormously high.
