The disappointing summer box office might finally be showing signs of improvement. Two weeks ago Toy Story 3 opened with an impressive $109 million domestically and now The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has already made $68.5 million in just one day of release. The film opened with midnight showings on June 30th and earned a record breaking $30 million, but eventually fell short of The Twilight Saga: New Moon's $72.7 million opening day record with only $68.5 million.
So it goes without saying that predicted to take the top spot at the box office this week is the long awaited third chapter of the phenomenally popular Twilight film series, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. The film stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, (Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning and Bryce Dallas Howard. While it has already broken one record this weekend, the true test will be to see if it can manage to crack the incredible $158 million that The Dark Knight made when it opened in 2008. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse does have an advantage since it opened at midnight on Wednesday over the holiday weekend, which The Dark Knight did not. Unfortunately the film is predicted to fall short of breaking that record with about $150 million. Which is just shy of taking second place from Spider-Man 3. But good enough to replace its predecessor, The Twilight Saga: New Moon at third place.
Currently the film has an average rating of a 3.4 on our site. Out of the sixty-one people who have rated the film twenty-six have given it five star. While the trailer for the film has had over 66,000 views. Here is what one of our readers had to say about the new film: "This is the film I've been waiting for since after I saw The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is a masterpiece, a triumph and a classic!" Another reader had this to say about the new movie, "I have hated the first two films in the saga but this was actually reasonable."
Finally our official reviewer Brian Gallagher had this to say, "It saddens me that I can't like a movie which has vampires fighting werewolves because they spend most of the movie having those classic monsters fighting over a girl who seems about as interesting as a thumb tack."
Predicted to debut at number two is M. Night Shyamalan's long awaited adaptation of the popular Nickelodeon animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, simply retitled The Last Airbender. The film is predicted to earn around $46.6 million this weekend. Currently the film has an average rating of a 4.1 on our site. Out of the fifty-six people who have rated the film, thirty-six have given it five stars while the trailer for the film has had over 39,000 views. Here is what one of our readers had to say about the new film: "I went in trying to enjoy the film aspect of it and came out thinking that this was just another abomination of a much beloved series, much like the film Dragonball Evolution." Another reader was even less impressed with the film and had this to say about the movie. "With one of the worst directors of our time, I'm honestly not surprised that this movie was terrible. From the minute I heard M. Night Shyamalan was directing and writing this I knew this was going to be a summer crap-buster and screwed-up adaptation. I mean, he really screwed up the series ... badly."
Predicted to fall from number one to number three this week for the first time since its debut two weeks ago is the third chapter of the extremely successful Pixar series Toy Story 3. The film features the return of Woody, Buzz and all your favorite toys along with an all-star cast of voice actors, which include Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Michael Keaton, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Jodi Benson, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, Ned Beatty, Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Kristen Schaal and Whoopi Goldberg. While the film did drop almost 50% last week from it's opening weekend, it still managed to earn an impressive $14,647 on each of it's 4,000 plus screens. In fact, the movie made around $18 million on Friday alone. Now in just under three weeks the film has earned roughly $251 million domestically, surpassing it's $200 million production cost and making it by far one of the biggest hits of the summer. The film is predicted to earn an additional $33.1 million this weekend.
Predicted to fall two places back this week to number four is the family comedy Grown Ups about five childhood friends who reunite 30 years later for a vacation with their families staring the comedy "Dream Team" of Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider. The film had a decent opening last week bringing in almost $14.5 million on Friday alone and went on to earn around $41 million for the weekend. The film was released on 3,534 screens and made around $11,602 on each. The film has now earned around $54 million in just under a week and is predicted to earn an additional $21.2 million this weekend.
Rounding out the top five this week and predicted to fall two spaces back from last week is the action/comedy Knight and Day, which just like this summer's Killers, is about an ordinary girl who unintentionally gets involved with a secret agent. However this film features super star actors Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in the leading roles. Last week the film was seen on 3,098 screens and earned $6,617 on each for a weekend total of around $45 million worldwide, which is a far cry from its purported $125 million production cost. It's estimated to earn an additional $10.8 million this holiday weekend.
The rest of the top ten films at the box office this weekend are predicted to look like this:
Predicted to fall two places from number four to number six this week is the re-make of the classic Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita underdog story The Karate Kid. The film moves the action from California to China and stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan in the lead roles. The movie was produced by Smith's superstar parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. While the film did drop almost 48.5% last week from the previous week it was added in seventy-seven theaters and managed to make around $4,118 on each of its 3,740 screens, earning an additional $15.4 million for weekend. The movie has now made an impressive $141 million in just three weeks of release, far surpassing its $40 million production cost. It's estimated to earn an additional $7.5 million this weekend.
Predicted to drop two places from last week to number seven is The A-Team, an adaptation of the classic '80s TV show. The film features an all-star cast which includes Liam Neeson as Col. Hannibal Smith, Bradley Cooper as Face, Quinton Jackson as B. A. Baracus and Sharlto Copley as Howling Mad Murdock. Together they are an elite unit of soldiers of fortune, eventually living in the Los Angeles underground, hunted by the government for a crime they didn't commit. The movie dropped 58.3% last week and was seen in three hundred and two less theaters than the week before. Still the film managed to earn roughly $1,851 on each of its 3,242 screens for an additional $6 million this weekend. The film has now earned around $65 million in three weeks but will still have a ways to go if it hopes to earn back its $110 million production cost. The film is predicted to earn an additional $4.3 million this weekend.
Predicted to fall two places back from last week to number eight is the rock n' roll comedy Get Him to the Greek, produced by Judd Apatow. The film stars Jonah Hill (Superbad) as a record company assistant who is told by his boss (Sean Combs) that he has three days to get a washed-up, alcoholic rock singer played by Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) from London to Los Angeles for his comeback show. Last week the film earned an additional $3 million and is predicted to earn another $2.4 million this weekend. The film has now earned $55.9 million at the box office since its release almost four weeks ago.
Predicted to Drop two places from last week to number nine is the forth installment of DreamWorks Animation's phenomenally successful Shrek series, Shrek Forever After. The film, stars the returning voice talents of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas and Eddie Murphy. The film earned an additional $2.87 million last weekend and is expected to another $2.1 million this weekend. The film has now earned an amazing $231 million at the box office since its release over a month ago, earning its $165 million production cost back and then some.
Finally, predicted to fall two spaces back from last week to number ten is Disney Studios and super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer's adaptation of the classic video game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans), Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina. So far the film has earned $87.2 million at the box office domestically and $313 worldwide in just under four weeks of release. The movie is predicted to take in an additional $1.9 million this weekend at the box office. @CellulidDreams - Let us save you the time... don't do it, it was f'ing horrible. This summer sucks something fierce. I've seen straight to DVD movies that are better than some of the crapfest coming out this year. Hell, straight to cable for that matter. Some of the best things to watch are on Showtime and HBO now. The theater has been beyond a waste of time this summer. It sucks when one of my favorite pass-times is now one of the things I'm constantly ripping.

I saw "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" Wed, opening day, after that, there was nothing left to see over the 4th of July weekend! Just crap!
I wanted to see "Jonah Hex" out of curiosity, But by Friday it was down from about 10 theaters in my area, to 2 theaters out of my area!
Summer 2010 so far is just a bummer of summer!

Well, after sucking on my pick for the summer sleeper, thanks MNight, I was at least right on saying Eclipse would burnout fast. This market is over saturated and most of the primary crowd for Twilight have the attention span of a gnat. Regardless of this being what most are considering the best of the series to date... all this market wants is the next one as quick as possible.

@mrman3810 Eclipse has NO CHANCE at breaking The Dark Knight's opening weekend record. NONE AT ALL! Estimates for Friday show Eclipse made 28.6 million. For it to break The Dark Knight's record it has to make another 129.8 million dollars Saturday through Monday. That clearly won't happen nor will it even be close. The weekend totals for Eclipse will be about 70 to 80 million dollars. Nowhere near what The Dark Knight did.

The Narrator: The Better Man
@AvatarSequel, I agree with you. The Batman movies would have made dough no matter how bad they were. Luckily they were great, but that barely had anything to do with its take. Ledgers death, and the icon of Batman sold TDK to new heights, with story taking a back seat on the ticket sales.
However, Inception will net more money than The Prestige. First off, its an epic. Prestige was not. Any sci-fi fan or action fan should be sold by the trailer alone. I have friends who don't know crap about movies that want to see it.
Second, the marketing campaign is far better than the one that surrounded The Prestige when it came out. Inceptions viral campaign, slogan, and tv spots are all over the place (at reasonable prices hopefully). So yea, its out there.
And thirdly, the film has an astounding cast of men and women to draw fans of those actor/actresses to see the film. I'm sure it will be a hit and gradually up the income over the weeks. Huge? Probably not. Make a profit, hell yeah!

@ Diaigma....
My predictions of course are way off as well...I admit, I made a mistake...Ah well, these things happen. Surprisingly, business was pretty good last night. Airbender, all things considered with reviews, etc. is doing very well. But, I believe it will be a quick play....
Not sure where the weekend will lay out, but you were right....Airbender will be number 2...We both can walk away with some wrongs about this weekend. I admit...I made a mistake.

Yes I noticed. No need to make the extra effort to point it out. I agree. Lets move on.
How about a 3 day weekend total estimate? You this will match up with yours?

I don't believe Inception will make Batman type money. Let me explain... the movie will probably be amazing. Believing in Nolan, I know it will be. BUT, it's not an established idea. Those of us who are faithful followers of Nolan will enjoy the heck out of it, but it won't be as popular. Much as The Prestige was a great movie, but it didn't conquer the box office. Least that's my take.

Yeah, not liking these predictions either. Took my son to Eclipse and we both set through as all hope was destroyed with Airbender. Both times, I noticed the theater wasn't nearly as packed as I thought it would be. I'm starting to think everyone is under the same oppinion as most of us on this site... THIS SUMMER BLOWS for movies.
The only movie I halfway enjoyed was Karate Kid. Even though the original is an UBER classic, this wasn't a horrible reimaging job from Hollyweird. It was freaking fantastic seeing Jackie Chan in a somewhat dramatic role. Yes, I know I'm probably gonna catch some hell for this statement.

I am getting ready to eat my own words. Looks like overall Airbender will end up in 2nd place over the weekend. I was wrong...The movie did open, and is doing much better than expected...Did you see that I said, I was also wrong....But, I was right about it being a bad movie...Let's move on shall we..
Looks like Friday Estimates are...
1. Twilight @ 30 Million
2. Airbender @ 19 Million
3. Toy Story @ 13 Million
4. Grown Ups @ 9 Million

"Airbender" wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be; but I'm glad my money went to that movie instead of "Eclipse". I still HATE that stupid Saga!!!

@Diaigma, Airbender will probably still come out at #2 even with all the negative reviews from fans and critics but after this weekend it will die very quickly. Knight and Day was a pretty fun movie. Nolan's Inception should be fantastic, that's why it's been my #1 anticipated of the year since I heard it was being made, Nolan is an extremely talented director who knows how to make films intriguing and very entertaining.

Even though Airbender was a complete and utter failure, I kinda hope it does land second place so a certain "someone" can eat his own words alongside me :P
I think I'll check out Knight and Day myself as well. Anything to turn Airbender into a repressed memory. Please, Mr. Nolan. Deliver in the next two weeks, man!

I meant Eclipse won't break make 158.4 million for the weekend(Friday through Monday. Monday because of the Holiday weekend). But by Monday, its 6th day at the box office it should have about 160 to 170 million. Which is not the record breaker. I am tried of people thinking that Wednesday and Thursday numbers are included for the weekend totals. THEY AREN'T!
2 years agoby @thedude1Flag

TheDude1 it is Friday-Sun for the weekend, but being a holiday it will have its own weekend (4-day). No way Eclipse make 150M this weekend, you mean Fri-Sun right, because the article did not mention another time frame.
