BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS: Can Toy Story 3 Conquer the Box Office for a Second Week in a Row?

PREDICTED WEEKEND BOX OFFICE

The disappointing summer box office got a much needed injection of excitement last weekend when Toy Story 3 opened with an impressive $109 million domestically. The film absolutely destroyed fellow newcomer Jonah Hex and took the tenth spot on the all-time best opening weekend list right behind The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Iron Man 2 and Shrek the Third, Alice in Wonderland, Spider-Man, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, respectively. But will it be able to retain the top spot this week against two highly anticipated summer films including Knight and Day and Grown Ups? The answer is ... yes!

Predicted to take the top once again this week is the third chapter of the extremely successful Pixar series, Toy Story 3. The film features the return of Woody, Buzz and all your favorite toys along with an all-star cast of voice actors, which include Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Michael Keaton, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Jodi Benson, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, Ned Beatty, Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Kristen Schaal and Whoopi Goldberg. While the film was predicted to take the number one spot last week with $120 million, it did not quite exceeded expectations. The film earned an impressive $41 million on its opening day alone, making it the biggest weekend animated opener of all time. On Wednesday of this week the film made $13.4 million, which was far superior to Knight and Day's $3.8 opening day total. As of today the film has made $154 million domestically and around $43 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $197 million in just fewer than two weeks, which easily earns back the films $190 million production cost. The movie is expected to earn another $66.1 million this weekend.

Predicted to debut at number two is the family comedy Grown Ups about five childhood friends who reunite 30 years later for a vacation with their families staring the comedy "Dream Team" of Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider. The film is predicted to make around $33.2 million in its opening weekend. Currently the film has an average rating of a 4.2 on our site. Out of the eleven people who have rated the film seven have given it five stars while the trailer for the film has had over 7,000 views. With an all-star cast of comedians expectations for this film are pretty high and here are a few of the comments that our readers have been making about the film. "I can't wait," said one user. "Nice cast, can't go wrong," said another. Finally, a reader had this to say after viewing the trailer for the first time, "Very funny!"

Predicted to debut at number three this week is the action/comedy Knight and Day, which just like this summer's Killers, is about an ordinary girl who unintentionally gets involved with a secret agent. However this film features super star actors Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in the leading roles. As mentioned earlier, the film was released on Wednesday and only managed to earn a disappointing $3.8 million on its opening day, not exactly what is expected from a film that stars two of the biggest stars in the world. The movie is predicted to earn a total of $26.8 million in its opening weekend. Currently the film has an average rating of a 2.8 on our site. Out of the sixteen people who have rated the film only four have given it five stars while the trailer for the film has had over 8,000 views. Here is what a few of our readers who have already seen the film had to say about it. "Dumb but honest. Like a golden retriever covered in ketchup." The reader went on to say, "To be fair, the film doesn't shoot very high. It wears its lowbrow goofiness right there on its sleeve, and it mostly achieves its goal of being a light-hearted, dumb as a rock summer action movie. Finally, one reader simply had this to say, "Underwhelming feeling, undeniable fun."

Predicted to fall two spaces back from last week to number four is the re-make of the classic Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita underdog story The Karate Kid. The film moves the action from California to China and stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan in the lead roles. The movie was produced by Smith's superstar parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. The film surpassed everyone's expectations two weeks ago in its opening weekend by taking the top spot on the charts but fell last week by almost 49%. The film earned a weekend total of $29 million last week, which brings it's total domestic gross to $106.2 million in just two weeks of release, which is well beyond it's purported $40 million production cost. The film is predicted to earn another $18.5 million this weekend.

Rounding off the top five and predicted to fall two places back from number three last week is The A-Team, an adaptation of the classic '80s TV show. The film features an all-star cast which includes Liam Neeson as Col. Hannibal Smith, Bradley Cooper as Face, Quinton Jackson as B. A. Baracus and Sharlto Copley as Howling Mad Murdock. Together they are an elite unit of soldiers of fortune, eventually living in the Los Angeles underground, hunted by the government for a crime they didn't commit. The film surprised everyone in it's opening week by underperforming, coming in second behind The Karate Kid. However, the film managed to earn an additional $13.7 million last weekend and only dropped 57% from the previous week. That brought it's total domestic gross to around $49.7 million in just two weeks, which is still well below it's purported $110 million production cost. The film is expected to earn an additional $7.6 million this weekend.

The rest of the top ten films at the box office this weekend are predicted to look like this:

Predicted to fall two spots from last week to number six is the rock n' roll comedy Get Him to the Greek, produced by Judd Apatow. The film stars Jonah Hill (Superbad) as a record company assistant who is told by his boss (Sean Combs) that he has three days to get a washed-up, alcoholic rock singer played by Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) from London to Los Angeles for his comeback show. Last week the film earned an additional $6.1 million and is predicted to earn another $4.4 million this weekend. The film has now earned $50.7 million at the box office since its release over three weeks ago.

Dropping two places from last week to number seven is the forth installment of DreamWorks Animation's phenomenally successful Shrek series, Shrek Forever After. The film, stars the returning voice talents of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas and Eddie Murphy. The film earned an additional $5.5 million last weekend and is expected to another $3.9 million this weekend. The film has now earned an amazing $225 million at the box office since its release over a month ago, earning its $165 million production cost back and then some.

Predicted to fall two spaces back from last week to number eight is Disney Studios and super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer's adaptation of the classic video game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans), Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina. So far the film has earned $82.7 million at the box office domestically and $295 worldwide in just under four weeks of release. The movie is predicted to take in an additional $3.3 million this weekend at the box office.

Predicted to fall one space back from its dismal debut last week to number nine is the big screen adaptation of DC Comics' beloved Western character, Jonah Hex. The scarred anti-hero rides on to the big screen in his own feature film, which stars Josh Brolin in the title role and co-starring Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett, Michael Shannon, Aidan Quinn, Lance Reddick and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The film, which failed to find its audience last week, made a disappointing $1.9 million on Friday alone and ended up only making $5 million for the entire weekend. It is a certified bomb, and will still have a far way to go if it wants to break even and earn back its reported $47 million production cost. The film is expected to earn an additional $2.8 million this weekend.

Finally, rounding off the top ten this week and falling three spaces back from number seven last week is the action comedy Killers starring Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy) as an average woman unknowingly engaged to an international super-spy played by Ashton Kutcher (Valentine's Day). So far the film has earned $41.1 million at the box office domestically and only $11 worldwide in just under three weeks of release. The movie is predicted to take in an additional $2.1 million this weekend at the box office. "K&D" has only made $7.2mil worldwide thus far, and will most certainly NOT top "TS3," and will probably fall under "GU," despite the dismal reviews it's getting.

Okay, just to make it clear... when I say Avatar is my bet for the summer sleeper, I mean The Last Airbender. @AnnoyingFilmCritic ... we agree on JC's Avatar, I didn't care for it. Don't get me wrong fanboys/girls, it was loaded with some stellar cgi... but I still see it as a lame attempt at JC to try and retell the Dances with Wolves plot.

Inception looks badass and we might see it pull a long haul come Oscar nods and if they hold out on releasing it to DVD, but I'm still putting money down for Airbender. It looks badass and has enough family appeal that I think it's going to take money from word-of-mouth and the legs family crowds can put on a movie. Again, if I'm wrong, I'll admit it.

Yeah, the box office order above seems right...Pixar has the best movie studio track record going. Toy Story3 has been getting stellar reviews/word of mouth, which will pounce all over "Grown Ups" & "Knight & Day." Family movies, Good family movies, consistently prove to be the box office kings since they have such broad appeal, especially to parents who don't go to theatres much, unless their rugrats are begging to see something.

As for the Avatar dustup on here...it sure is nice to see some Avatar backlash! Geez, it's about time that some movie fans realize that Avatar is a Big pile of Blue Shyt! (Read my Avatar review where I make my points). As much as I love eye candy effects spectacle, Good movies will Always be about a compelling Story & well developed, relatable Characters! My case in point: July's "Inception," directed by Christopher Nolan, Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has All the ingredients of what a Great movie should be...Check out the Inception trailer & see the Sleeper 2010 Summer hit movie unravel, but, onlyso much to intrigue...Story, Suspense, Amazing visuals and the "Cool Factor!"

@bounded 6 of the top 12 top movies that have made the most money(adjusted for inflation) have been made after 1970. And over the past 40 years in film Avatar has spent far more money making the movie and advertising it than any other movie.

okay, my comment came from just irritating people to defending Avatar. I'm done.

i am surprised how many people wasted there time seeing Avatar in the theaters it just shocks me how many people are that desperate for entertainment these days dont people have better things to do then spend 10 bucks or more at the theater i mean i love movies but DVD And Blu-ray are better choices and i do understand how the box office is needed but still... ok i am done ranting

    2 years agoby @emmyttFlag

  12. bounded

Even if I consider adjustment for inflation, Avatar still has made the highest gross for the last 30 years. Really all the highest grossing top ten movies range from 1930's to 1970's.

  13. TheDude1

@bounded How does it fell that Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, The Sound of Music, E.T., The Ten Commandments, Titanic, Jaws, Doctor Zhivago, The Exorcist, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and 101 Dalmatians just to name a few all have made more money than Avatar? Avatar is a movie that made a lot of money at the box office with an insane amount spent on production and advertising. Not to mention that most people dislike the movie.

Avatar was not an epic masterpiece it was just good nothing more nothing less

Take into consideration that Airbender is adored throughout the world. Absolutely everybody I know is STOKED for that movie. That same anticipation will be going on everywhere. Even if Twilight is #1 here in the states and Canada, Airbender will annihilate it world-wide. I promise you that. And TS3 will continue to play solidly, since it was a more then solid movie, and it's Pixar.

  17. zoolander86

@bounded u sound like a huge doucher who probablly should add in inflation u r just a queer who jumps on the bandwagon when something becomes popular

  18. bounded

Nope I didn't, therefore, Avatar is still the highest grossing movie.

@bounded Actually if you count inflation which you must Avatar is not even in the top 10.

I say TS3 will win this weekend very easily and it will fall to #3 next week when Eclipse and Airbender come out. If we're only counting the weekend for next week I see Eclipse making $70 million+ (because it comes out on a wednesday and it'll make most of it's money up front) and Airbender will make around $50 million+ (because it's going to be released on a thursday) and TS3 will take #3 with around $40 million+ And when I say weekend, I mean Fri-Sun

i will say that toy story 3 will stay on top for a second week in a row and then go down to second place when predators comes out. those 2 films well battle it out then and we will find out what fimls are good for teh next 2 or 3 weeks.

    2 years agoby @wilber11995Flag

I think The Last Airbender will make at most, half of what Eclipse will make opening weekend.

Toy Story will very likely beat Growns Ups and Knight and Day, not sure if it can beat Twilight's rabbid fan girls though,

  29. joekerr2e

I'm still saying, "Avatar will have the legs this summer". If it doesn't, I won't have a problem saying I was totally wrong, but it's still my summer sleeper pick. I agree it won't be number one with Twilight out at the same time, but I do think Twilight's numbers will fall quicker than Avatar and TS3 by week two. I'll give TS3 this, never even crossed my mind that it would do so well, but they haven't rushed the franchise to the screen, and it's done remarkably well.
