WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
It's been a boffo weekend for Fast Five. This big budget car sequel seems to have welcomed the summer blockbuster season into the box office. It managed to crank out a spectacular $83 million. Add in international takes and it's grossed $165 million. This is particularly impressive because this surprisingly well-reviewed crowd-pleaser has managed to top the previous entry in the series which made $71 million on opening weekend.
In other news, Rich Ross of Disney is no doubt tucking his tail between his legs after his first attempt at creating a new franchise bombed big time. Prom was an utter disaster. They had predicted a $9 million opening but instead the tween film debuted to a very disappointing $5 million. It seems this won't be getting the High School Musical sequel treatment unless a ton of girls turn out in the next week or two. Doesn't look like this one is going to last long.
It was also a flop weekend for the Weinsteins with Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil also opening to poor numbers. An expected $8 million take turned out to be only $4 million. Who was even asking for this sequel?
Rio didn't fly quite as high as hoped. $18 million was forecast for the animated hit, but it took in only about $14 million.
Meanwhile, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night also did poorly. It didn't even crack the top ten. I have yet to figure out what this movie is about and it seems the rest of the moviegoing public didn't care to find out either. In it's place, Scream 4 managed to squeak in with $2.1 million.
Rio was released April 15th, 2011 and stars Karen Disher, Jason Fricchione, Sofia Scarpa Saldanha, Leslie Mann, Kelly Keaton, Jesse Eisenberg, Wanda Sykes, Jane Lynch. The film is directed by Carlos Saldanha.
Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil was released April 29th, 2011 and stars Glenn Close, Hayden Panettiere, Cheech Marin, Patrick Warburton, Joan Cusack, Bill Hader, David Ogden Stiers, Amy Poehler. The film is directed by Mike Disa.
Hop was released April 1st, 2011 and stars James Marsden, Russell Brand, Kaley Cuoco, Hank Azaria, Gary Cole, Elizabeth Perkins, Hugh Laurie, Tiffany Espensen. The film is directed by Tim Hill.
Scream 4 was released April 15th, 2011 and stars Lucy Hale, Roger Jackson, Shenae Grimes, Dane Farwell, Anna Paquin, Kristen Bell, Aimee Teegarden, Britt Robertson. The film is directed by Wes Craven.
Fast Five was released April 29th, 2011 and stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Matt Schulze, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot. The film is directed by Justin Lin.
Prom was released April 29th, 2011 and stars Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, DeVaughn Nixon, Danielle Campbell, Yin Chang, Jared Kusnitz, Nolan Sotillo, Cameron Monaghan. The film is directed by Joe Nussbaum.
Dylan Dog: Dead of Night was released April 29th, 2011 and stars Brandon Routh, Anita Briem, Sam Huntington, Peter Stormare, Taye Diggs, Paulington James Christensen III, Kurt Angle, Brian Steele. The film is directed by Kevin Munroe.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Nigh: The film has received predominantly negative reviews in the states and currently has a score of 8 percent on Rottentomatoes
What is even stranger I read that "Dylan Dog: Dead of Night" the horror film is based on an Italian comic book....!!!

Scream 4 - According to "industry experts", the film's $19.3 million opening weekend was "disappointing", experiencing the second-lowest opening of the Scream franchise.

Look on the box office numbers and Dylan Dog didn't even hit a cold mill, how lame is that. The trailer alone look like it should have been straight to dvd that and Prom with Hoodwinked 2 which the 1st one sucked by the way. Fast 5 nearly or have earn their money back congrads, would love to see Rio but since kids going to be there I'll wait till dvd

@2movieguys I'd be surprised if Fast Five stays in the top spot next week with 67m while Thor could make 65m. Thor looks pretty damn good too :)

Fast Five actually was a completely different story from the last 4. Meaning that it wasn't all about racing street cars and hot chicks, but the 5th one was more like an Ocean's Eleven heist film with hot cars and hot chicks. That shows how much they evolved in the past 10yrs! Plus that 80% on rottentomatoes proves it is the best one yet!

@skywise Haven't seen Life Is Hot in Cracktown. I think Dylan Dog is like John Constantine. Not enough people know about it to be a blockbuster.

I'm surprised it made that much cabbage. The last one felt like Transporter 2 and 3. Where the over the top sfx separate it from the original.

@disciple419 i thought he was decent in Chuck and i really liked his performance in Life is Hot in Cracktown although i would suggest reading the book first. He may not be good an improv but that is really a lot harder than the pros make it look and Justin Long is kind of incredible.

@skywise Routh cant act though. Everything I've seen him in, he just stands with a blank expression and spouts the lines like he's reading from cue cards. On the deleting scenes to Zack and Miri, he and Justin Long are supposed to ad lib a scene and he just sits there while long improves. He's got the look but no talent.

Too bad about Dylon Dog, i honestly had never heard of the character until i read about him here but Sam Huntington and Routh deserve better. Maybe this will do better overseas where the comic originated from?
