BOX OFFICE BEAT DOWN: Watchmen Secure Their Number One Status with $55.6 Million

Weekend Box Office:

1) Watchmen $55.6 million

2) Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail $8.8 million

3) Taken $7.4 million

4) Slumdog Millionaire $6.9 million

5) Paul Blart: Mall Cop $4.2 million

6) He's Just Not That Into You $4 million

7) Coraline $3.3 million

8) Confessions of a Shopaholic $3.1 million

9) Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience $2.7 million

10) Fired Up $2.6 million

Watchmen came on strong Thursday at midnight, with its initial theatrical debut pulling in over $4 million, but those figures didn't hold throughout the weekend. Considered a tough sell by some, Zack Snyder's highly anticipated graphic novel adaptation secured $55.6 million over the weekend, making it the number one film. But it fell below industry expectations. It proved to be a popular film with fans of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' original book, but those not in the know were slightly baffled by this superhero outing. You can look for it to drop quite a bit next week, as the film certainly didn't live up to its hype in the eyes of the general film going public.

Dropping to number two in its third week of release is Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail. The comedic drama pulled in another $8.8 million, which makes its cumulative take $76 million. This is a career best for Perry, and he has already signed on to do two more films for Lionsgate. Though, it is still up in the air as to when Madea herself will return to the big screen. Also experiencing a career high this year is Liam Neeson, whose Taken remains in the number three position. A true crowd pleaser, the Luc Beeson produced action thriller took in another $7.4 million, placing its stateside cumulative profits at $118 million. Worldwide, the film has already grossed $190 million. Taken is looking to be one of the biggest surprise hits of the year.

It's a sad tale for the Jonas Brothers as their Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience fell all the way down to number 9 in its second week of release with just $2.7 million. The film has only racked in $16.7 million thus far. Hopefully it will fare better on DVD and Blu-Ray. The film with the highest per screen earnings this weekend was TOKYO!. It took in $21,500 playing on just one screen. If it had been given the 3,611 screens held by Watchmen, it could have potentially earned $77.6 million, making it the number one film of the weekend.

Watchmen doesn't stand a chance next weekend as Disney's high anticipated Race to Witch Mountain will race into theaters, along with the Wes Craven remake The Last House on the Left. Until next week, hurm!

Taken was released January 30th, 2009 and stars Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Leland Orser, Jon Gries, David Warshofsky, Holly Valance, Katie Cassidy, Xander Berkeley. The film is directed by Pierre Morel.

What was the Budget of this Movie again? And to Raging_luis85-- why do you always use the phrase "can of worms" in every argument?

Well... My Dad has the exact same opinion as me, and HE'S a casual viewer. :P (Just have to make you wrong, even though it IS true about my Dad. :P)

And I agree with ComradeHenson and Agent VIS. If it was soft porno, then you'd hear them saying stupid sh*t like "Oh yes! Do it like that," and then there'd be pointless moaning...... Not that I'd KNOW that or anything. :P

Vamp... I said "Casual viewers, however, who don't know a thing about the novel will quickly forget this movie and move on to Transformers 2 and other summer blockbusters". YOU... my friend ar NOT a "casual viewer". Most theater film buffs like me and you and many others on this site break down the films and really enjoy to see what they're really all about. We break down the acting, the directing, the storyline, the visusals, the plots, etc etc etc. The casual viewer does not do this.... and THAT is why they'll completely forget about Watchman and enjoy Transformers 2.

As far as the male nudity is concerned... like I said, it didn't bother me... but I think there were many scenes where the schlong was shown and it simply wasn't necessary. Same with the soft porn in the Archiemobile... when they started taking their clothes off, I think we got the idea what was happening. They didn't HAVE TO show us the actual act. As I said... "I honestly thought the soft porno scene in the Archiemobile was simply done BECAUSE they had the rated R".

Anyway... I think I've had enough with this topic. I'll just wait til next weekend to see how Watchman does.... See if I'm right or wrong about it. Cause.... you know... I don't make mistakes. Once... I thought I made a mistake.... but I was mistaken. haha Get it?

I'm not talking about immigrants Luis, most of them deserve citizenship more than a lot of the people born here. In order to vote here and enjoy full citizens benefits, we should all have to take a (the same) test. Other countries have voter competency examinations (and I'm not talking about the unfair, poorly written, racially biased things of the post abolition era; I mean legitimate tests that gauge factors relevant to effective voting)

And I think it will be up to DVDs and BluRays (whose profit margin is f*cking MASSIVE) to make this think break even. It might see 80 million in theatres if it's lucky.

To Comrade: I totally agree with the R rating topic. One thing I hate is a whole bunch kids ruining a movie a paid to see. As far as "giving away citizenship like candy", you have no idea what you're talking about. But that's a whole nother can of worms.

  14. -comrade-

I think it's funny that people would take their kids to this, but also sad. I know this will never happen in America, but I really just want to replace the R rating with NC-17 so I don't have to deal with kids in movies they shouldn't be in PERIOD. I know, I know, there are kids who could handle it, but we give out citizenship like candy, we might as well regulate it universally.

LMFAO. MovieBuff... I've never read the Graphic Novel, and really know nothing about this, but I'm not about to forget "Watchmen" for a popcorn flick like "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." I mean, I'm looking forward to it, but it wont' be near what "Watchmen" was. And this is coming from someone who knew NOTHING about the film. There's exceptions to all rules. Remember! "Assume" makes an ass out of "U" and "ME." :P

On a more relative note, I think those who say that "Watchmen" will drop like "Friday the 13th" did in ratings........ Are completely correct. I mean, it's not your average, everyday SuperHero film. There's full frontal nudity, a rape scene, some soft-porn sex scenes, exploding people. It's just not what many would consider the norm when it comes to Superhero movies. The boom in it's income is from the die hard fans who wanted to see it, as well as families who weren't expecting this, and probably walked out after the first sighting of Dr. Manhattan's genitals.

Funny Story: I say in the waiting area as I waited for the sign to say "Now Seating," and another family (A Husband, Wife, and Eight-Year-Old boy) sat down. I assumed that they'd be going to view "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," but no! They went and got in line for "Watchmen" when my Dad and I did! LMFAO! I wonder how long it took them to walk out.

In regards to Dr. Manhattan's nudity, was it really that big of a deal? I'll admit, it was the last thing that I was expecting to see in this movie. My original reaction was ".....Ok.....?" and after that, it really wasn't that big of a deal. I agree completely with Twisted Smile: If you let THAT ruin the movie in any way for you, then it shows a lot for your maturity level. Also, I agree with Diaigma. The people who snigg*red, or were disgusted, were all probably insecure and homophobic, and it's sad that these people would let that ruin such an awesome movie for them.

Anyway, I think the film was a great length of time, and when it was over, my response was "It's been two hours and forty-five minutes ALREADY?" The only thing weighing down the time thing for me, would be the fact that I had an entire large Pepsi sitting in my bladder. LMFAO!

But on my original note, these R-Rated movies, sad as it may be, don't have a high rating. It's the family movies, like "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," that have people continuously coming back, looking for a family experience. So I expect that "Race to Witch Mountain" will PROBABLY overtake the lead for this one.

Don't get me wrong, though. I'd be tickled pink if "Watchmen" took the lead again next week! LMFAO! :P

Watchmen did good at the box office for how long it was.It was like 2 hours and 45 min.If u only have it playing on one screen at your theater how many times could you show it.55 million is really good for a movie that long.

  21. Err

yeah, i can't relate. i don't care who was hypnotised by the penis.

one time i was watching tv and my room mate says "hey man look at this" and i turned my head and found myself face to face with a flaccid c*ck twice the size of my own. ever since then penises dont really bother me.

but on the subject, why is it okay to have c*cks a floppin' all over movies these days (have you seen 'forgetting sarah parshall, eastern promises, etc) and you'd STILL be hard-pressed to find a beaver shot in a regular (non-porno) movie that actually shows the female weapon of mind control in all it's glory.

the closest we've come (that i can think of off-hand) was sharon stone in the basic instinct, but all you really saw was some hair.

how about a little equality, jeez.

It just bothers me that to some, that ruined the movie for them. It was great and I loved it and a movie should only be judged badly if it does'nt do the job that it was trying to do,which is entertain. So to anyone who had a problem with his nudity fine, just don't let that be the reason not to like it.

  24. MovieBuff

Ok... I'm not a homophobe, but I honestly think they showed Manhatten's schlong too many times. Don't think it was necessary. There were quite a few scenes (conversations) that could have been done without showing the enitre body while he was talking. Just like they show female nudity in films, I don't mind male nudity when necessary... but it was a little too much for my taste. And I honestly thought the soft porno scene in the Archiemobile was simply done BECAUSE they had the rated R. Wasn't necessary at all.... except for all you horny kids out there.

I've read both the novel and now seen the movie and it really does stay the course. Not much is changed except for a couple of things that really didn't make a difference in telling the story. However, I enjoyed the novel so much more. I thought the visuals in the film were amazing and the fight sequences were done fantastically... they were eye popping... especially the fight at the beginning with the Comedian and his killer... and... the fight between Viedt against Rorschach and the Nite Owl. Very nice.... but I thought it dragged way too much. Maybe its because I knew the story and I wanted the movie to move along, but my brother (who has never read the novel) thought it dragged way too much as well. So basically it dragged for someone who is a fan of the book and for someone who knew nothing about the Watchmen going into the film.

The film made 55 million this week and will probably have drastic falls (like the remake of Friday the 13th had) in the next two weeks. It will probably fall to like 22 to 25 million which is about a 60% dropoff.

I think the movie is an above average movie (not great unless your a super fan of the novel... then I guess its AWESOME). And I agree with some of you, that this movie will become a cult classic... especially for the Watchmen fans. Casual viewers, however, who don't know a thing about the novel will quickly forget this movie and move on to Transformers 2 and other summer blockbuster.

oh yeah, the giant blue c*ck, thanks for reminding me.
objectively i get that his dangler was ginormous because he was supposed to god-like, and no one expects god to be packing a derringer, but subjectively speaking i think it would have been cooler if his package was a bit more modest. it could have been because the doctor was so detached from normal humanity (which he was) that he didnt feel the need to pack a howitzer, much as he didnt feel the need to be overly sympathetic to the weaknesses of humans.
but to clarify i wasn't offended by it, in fact i thought it rather amusing. i mean seriously, why would a guy made up of floating energy need to wear clothes? i can't imagine wearing clothes would be very comfortable to him, assuming he were still capable of physical comfort.

is anyone really surprised that a nation once hypnotised by "the macarena", and in more recent times being a nation that drooled over such travesties as "paul blart" and "black guy in a fat lady costume goes to jail" were put off by an intelligent story such as the 'watchmen'?

george carlin once described people in general as "a few winners and a whole lot of losers" and it would behoove us all to adopt this same mentality, even those of you who fall into the 'whole lot of losers' category whether you realize it or not.
