Weekend Box Office
1) WALL-E $62.5 million
2) Wanted $51.1 million
3) Get Smart $20 million
4) Kung Fu Panda $11.7 million
5) The Incredible Hulk $9.2 million
6) The Love Guru $5.4 million
7) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull $5 million
8) The Happening $3.8 million
9) Sex and the City: The Movie $3.7 million
10) You Don't Mess with the Zohan $3.2 million
It was Disney & Pixar's latest CGI animated tale about a lonely robot that took the number one position on the box office chart this weekend. WALL-E, featuring the voice talents of Siguorney Weaver, John Ratzenberger, and Jeff Garlin, racked in a cash sum of $62.5 million. This opening bested both of the last two Pixar outings. In 2006, the talking automobile adventure Cars hit its opening day mark with $60.1 million, while last year's rodent infestation tale Ratatouille pulled in a less than amazing $47 million.
In second place this week with $51.1 million was visionary director Timur Bekmambetov's American debut Wanted. This tale of superhero assassins hit way above expectations, and has been called "the funnest film of the summer" by at least every critic we know. An amazing spectacle of action and adventure, you can expect Wanted to stick around the top of the charts as word of mouth leaks out to those less willing to leave the house and pay $18 dollars a ticket.
Only two smaller independent films opened this weekend in limited release. Catherine Breillat's drama The Last Mistress, which stars Asia Argento, opened on two screens with $35,200. This gave it the second highest per screen average with $17,600 for each location. The film with the highest per screen average was last weekend's bombshell Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, which pulled in another amazing $106,000 playing on just five screens. It's per screen average hit at $21,200 per location. Trumbo, a biopic about blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, took in a healthy $28,500 playing on a mere three screens.
WALL-E and Wanted don't have long to reign at the top, as Will Smith, king of Fourth of July weekend, hits this Tuesday with Hancock.
WALL-E was released June 27th, 2008 and stars Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin, Fred Willard, MacInTalk, John Ratzenberger, Kathy Najimy, Sigourney Weaver. The film is directed by Andrew Stanton.

what i meant by my "explanation" was that Wanted gave a poor one while The Matrix gave a very interesting, and more entertaining one(atleast in my opinion).
I also couldn't help but notice that everything that happened in this movie was a complete copy of The Matrix.
the dude was having a boring, office-cubicle life when a sassy chick shows up and tells him he's gifted and wants him to join the clan of super-people. the only difference is the ending.
i tried to enter this movie thinking it was just for fun but, like Cell said, after the story kicked in and it tried to be more than it was, i lost control of all the thoughts going thru my head of how dumb this movie was.
Im not saying anyone's wrong, im just saying that I have an opinion and this is it.

I tried so hard to stop questioning "Wanted" and just take it for what it was ...but damn...the whole thing with the loom was straight out of Greek mythology ..and after that point in the film...I just coudln't stop questioning what the hell was going on!
"Wanted" is the action movie that requires you to believe that the most ridiculous things can happen without much explanation at all as to how or why they happen.

yes phat... it IS the first weekend Iron Man is not in the top 10. After EIGHT weekends in the top 10, Iron Man fell to number eleven. Indiana Jones is holding pretty strong too. Its up to SIX weekends and may hold up another two. Oh thanks for the backup on Wanted.

not to change the subject but is this the first week that "Iron Man" hasnt been in the top 10 since its release? Thats pretty impressive.

yea, its not like this movie tried to come across as something believable... right out of the gate they show that this movie will be very farfetched, and they kept it coming with the consistency.... so if you couldn't see past the whole "that can't happen" portion, then obviously Wanted wouldn't be for you. Just like moviebuff said, it was a good popcorn movie, no summer blockbuster.

Wanted was awesome! Just bink, u just said that wanted doesn't give an explanation for the bullet time, and yet right after that, U GAVE A FRIGGIN EXPLANATION!!! It's thier power, and only a few people have it. Wanted was an adrenaline pumped thrillride with meaning behind it, so all the haters can shut the f*ck up and just enjoy the movie for what it is!!!

I totally agree, justbink07, about the unbelievable aspect of Wanted. Believe me... i rolled my eyes several times in the movie. What I'm saying is that you need to throw all reality out the window and just enjoy the action part of it. Maybe if they had explained that this was an alternate reality where only gifted people could curve bullets, then we wouldn't laugh at the movie's concept. But they didn't... so many laugh at it and many hate it. Me? I think its a good popcorn movie. That's it. Nothing more.

"Wanted" was very far-fetched ...it spun out of control with a loom giving off the names of people to be killed....WOW when did Greek mythology get thrown into the mix!??!

I wouldn't waste a dime on "Disaster Movie"!

okay first.
dont use the phrase "like the matrix".
atleast the matrix had a good, thought provoking, complex explanation behind the bullet-time.
Wanted just says ur heart beats real fast so u can slow things down. and apparently this one guy's dad was some kind of superhuman who runs really really fast and jumps across skyscrapers. but in this movie, it happens for real, and they poorly play it off.
and yes for that sentence about his "dad", i know but i dont want to be attacked by spoiler haters.

I gave a list to my brother on Friday after seeing the midnight showing of Wanted... it was sold out... and this is what i predicted the top 10 movies would be this week:
Wall-E - 65 million
Wanted - 45 million
Get Smart - 23 million
Kung Fu Panda - 13 million
Incredible Hulk - 10 million
Indiana Jones - 5 million
Love Guru - 4.5 million
The Happening - 3.5 million
The Zohan - 3.2 million
Sex and the City- 2.8 million
Looks like Love Guru and Sex and the City surprised me with their numbers. Thought for sure these two flicks would make less money. Otherwise... I came pretty close.
I know I know... its easy to say I predicted these numbers after the fact but its true. Glad both movies did well.
Wall-E is very family oriented with some good messages about our environment, loyalty, friendship, and love. Pretty good messages for our youngsters I think. As for Wanted.... I totally agree this movie is WAY UNBELIEVABLE... BUT... its a movie where you have to throw all believable thoughts out the window and enjoy an action packed movie.... kinda like The Matrix. What would Terrell Owens say? Get your popcorn ready! That's what I did and enjoyed the action of the movie. Do I think its a great movie? Absolutely not. Do I think it was enjoyable? Yes.

"Wanted" was a split between my roomate and I.
I gave "Wanted" a C-, it was ok, just over-the-top and very far-fetched ...my roomate gave it a B+ *& liked it more than me!
"WALL-E" was cute, interesting(W./a huge "Think Green" Message!)!
Total A+! Pixar did it again! A new classic is born!
"WALL-E" was 100% better than "Kung Fu Panda"!
