Last week, after almost a month at the top of the charts, both Disney's Tangled and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 finally fell from the top spots to make room for two new films. The third chapter of the popular The Chronicles of Narnia series, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader and The Tourist, starring Oscar nominee Johnny Depp and Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, both debuted at number one and two, respectively. But with four new films entering the charts this week, including the highly anticipated sequel Tron: Legacy, the live-action Yogi Bear, the romantic comedy How Do You Know and Oscar bait The Fighter, it looks like we'll be crowning a new box office champ.
Debuting at number one this week is the sequel to the groundbreaking 1982 film, Tron, Tron: Legacy. The film picks up twenty-eight years after the first movie and stars the originals two leads Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) and Bruce Boxleitner (Scarecrow and Mrs. King), as well as Garrett Hedlund (Friday Night Lights), Olivia Wilde (Cowboys and Aliens), Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon), James Frain (True Blood) and Beau Garrett (Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer). The movie made $12,634 on each of its 3,451 screens for an opening weekend total of about $43.6 million, which is not even half of its $170 million production budget.
Debuting at number two this week is the live-action version of the classic cartoon Yogi Bear. The movie stars the voice talent of Dan Aykroyd (The Blues Brothers) and Justin Timberlake (The Social Network). The movie made $4,752 on each of its 3,515 screens for an opening weekend total of about $16.7 million, which is also far from its purported $80 million production budget.
Falling two places from last week to number three is the third chapter of the popular The Chronicles of Narnia series, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader. The film follows the adventures of Pevensie children as they make their third trip to the magical land of Narnia. The film stars Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley, Will Poulter and Bill Nighy, Simon Pegg and Liam Neeson. While the movie dropped 48.3% last week from the week before, it earned $3,488 on each screen for a weekend total of about $3,555 million. In it's first two weeks of release the movie has now earned $42.7 million but will still have to make a lot more money in the next few weeks if it hopes to earn back its entire $155 million production costs.
Debuting at number four in its first week of wide release is the critically acclaimed new film from Three Kings director David O. Russell, entitled The Fighter. The movie is based on the true story of boxing champ Micky Ward and stars an impressive cast of actors including Mark Wahlberg (The Other Guys), Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), Amy Adams (Leap Year) and Melissa Leo (Don McKay). The movie rose an astonishing 3,966.5% this week from last it's limited release last week and was shown on 2,499 more screens, for a total of 2,503. It earned $4,874 in each theater for a weekend total of $12.2 million. In addition to several Golden Globe nominations the film has now earned 12.6 million in two weeks of release, which is about half of its $25 million production budget.
Rounding off the top five this week and dropping three places from last week is the new drama thriller, The Tourist. The movie stars Oscar nominee Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End) and Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider), as well as Timothy Dalton (Toy Story 3) and Rufus Sewell (Amazing Grace). While the movie dropped 47.2% last week from the week before, it was shown on 2,756 screens, earning $3,157 on each screen for a weekend total of about $8.7 million. Despite being nominated for several Golden Globes last week, the movie has only earned about $30.7 million in two weeks of release, which is a far cry from its $100 million production budget.
Unfortunately, not all of the new releases scored well this week. Barely cracking the top ten and only coming in at number eight in its debut is the new comedy from Broadcast News director James L. Brooks called How Do You Know. The film stars an all-star cast, which includes Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line), Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man), Owen Wilson (Behind Enemy Lines) and three-time Oscar winner Jack Nicholson (As Good As It Gets). The movie only made $3,061 on each of its 2,483 screens for a disappointing opening weekend total of about $7.6 million, which is nowhere near earning back its $120 million production costs.
Doing well in its debut in limited release this week is Casino Jack, which is based on the true story disgraced lobbyist and convicted felon Jack Abramoff. The film is directed by the late George Hickenlooper (Factory Girl) and stars two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey (American Beauty), Barry Pepper (The 25th Hour), Jon Lovitz (Happiness) and Kelly Preston (Jerry Maguire). In addition to a Golden Globe nomination for Spacey, the movie made $5,000 on each of its 7 screens for an opening weekend total of about $3,5000.
Next week will see the holiday season heat up with four highly anticipated new films opening in wide release.
First up is No Country for Old Men directors Joel and Ethan Coen's True Grit, a remake of the classic John Wayne film. The movie stars an all-star cast, which includes Oscar winners Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) and Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (Milk), Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan) and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld.
Also opening next week is the third chapter of the popular Meet the Parents series, Little Fockers. The film features returning stars Ben Stiller (Tropic Thunder), Teri Polo (The West Wing), Owen Wilson (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) and Oscar winners Robert De Niro (Raging Bull), Barbra Streisand (Funny Girl) and Dustin Hoffman (Tootsie), as well as new cast members Jessica Alba (Sin City), Harvey Keitel (Cop Land) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park).
Next week will also see the opening of the new Jack Black (School of Rock) comedy, Gulliver's Travels. The movie, loosely based on the 18th century novel also stars Jason Segel (I Love You, Man), Emily Blunt (Charlie Wilson's War), Amanda Peet (Please Give) and Billy Connolly (The X-Files: I Want to Believe).
Finally, opening in wide release next week is the new musical drama Country Strong, from The Greatest director, Shana Feste. The movie stars Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love), Tim McGraw (The Blind Side), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) and Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl). Heard that Tron was confusing, the same effects were used throughout the whole movie, and that it really wasn't that good. But I'll probably still check it out

@huntsman They're called predictions. MovieWeb doesn't need to "get" them from anywhere. MW makes predictions based on decades and decades of ox of releases. It's not brain surgery.

Tron did better than it was projected to do. I don't know where Movieweb gets their estimates but they were inflated. It was really estimated to do around 35 to 40 million. It earned about 43.6. Which was better than expected. Plus it earned around 23 million abroad which would give it around 67 million for the weekend. It should do well on Christmas weekend and after Christmas which is a slow time for movie releases.
In case you want to know where I get most of my numbers from. It's a site called Boxoffice.com and their the best at predicting what a movie will make. Their almost always right. I really don't know where movieweb got their numbers from with their predictions.
